This game was decided when Nunge hurt his knee

So much talk about Kofi dominating, which was fair, but Garza had to play so lax to not pickup a foul. It was a good game plan by Illinois. That’s not how they would’ve played with Nunge tho. Was the main reason Iowa struggled that game. Weren’t able to Hack-a-shaq with Kofi which is the best way to beat Illinois.

I liked the move to end the half with Josh. I’d have been happier if he had played earlier this year but I’m guessing he wasn’t even ready for a couple minutes here and there. Sighs, I know this was an experienced team and minutes were hard to come by but I hoped the freshman had gotten some meaningful minutes earlier

I feel like Luka was just beat down today. Everytime he got the ball down low there was 2 or 3 defenders hacking at him and on the other end of the court you had Kofi slamming his body against Luka several times each time he got the ball down low. I think the extra days rest will help Luka be ready for March Madness. (I don't see how Luka can be surrounded when he has the ball and 3 people slapping at it and not at least one of them foul Luka)

Luka confined to playing passive. Jack has greater length that would have given Cockburn some problems.
Maybe would have guarded against the feeds down low.
Yep, this is a Nunge game. Helps stop the layup drill too. The Ref.'s sucked ass in this game too. I usually give them a pass but this was poorly officiated and one-sided, sorry it just was.

Nunge loss was huge. It sucks for him especially, but it really leaves a hole in the team.

Crap.

Agreed, it's like a graceful hyena attack, three of them and commit no foul. Freaking ridiculous, we've seen that all year though.

I don't know if Iowa would have won, but yes,, losing Nunge means Garza has to be more passive on defense in post, so the Garza advantage is reduced vs teams with post scorers.

Disagree.
the game got away when Garza picked up his 1st foul because Garza knew 2nd foul rule will require his mandatory benching. This knowledge of the ‘2 foul mandatory benching ‘ resulted in Garza playing soft defense, with or without Nunge, Garza is simply not going to play aggressive defense.

it’s actually the fear of getting benched that led to Kofi’s offensive success (and also opened up the lane without a rim protector ).

Pick and roll D was awful.
This. I posted last game against Wisky - Garza ALWAYS switch onto the guard on a pick and roll. This would leave Cockburn wide open underneath or at least a 7 footer against a Jordan or CJ. That was at least 3 or 4 open buckets in both games. That is 8 points, so if you take 8 from Cockburn the scoring this game was about the same as the first time we played Illinois (Cockburn vs. Luka).

The biggest things Jack Nunge could have given us in this game were size, minutes and five additional fouls,.. all of which would have made life more difficult for Cockburn..
