Evidently Paramount Pictures is remaking the entire Godfather trilogy, and Johnny Depp is slated to play Vito Corleone. Part I to be released next year. Part II in 2018 and Part III in 2020.

That should make anyone's head explode. Why mess with that? Doesn't Johnny Depp have a movie about spiders in the dark he can be making with Tim Burton and Helena Bonham-Carter?

Why on God's green earth are they making part 3? It was a complete and absolute abortion!

I don't think depp would be that bad for a remake

He's a good actor and will probably do a good job. Just make a brand new mob-movie. It's like they're remaking The Godfather just to avoid being accused of ripping off The Godfather. If there are cell-phones in this movie I hope it's boycotted.

I haven't heard anything about other casting choices besides Depp. But if they're going to blaspheme a legendary film then they need to go big or go home. I'm thinking something like this:

Channing Tatum as Michael
Dustin "Screech" Diamond as Tessio
Ryan Gosling as Tom Hagen
Jesse Eisenberg as Sonny
Joaquin Phoenix as Sollozzo
Zach Galifianakis as Luca Brasi
Justin Timberlake as Moe Greene

James Franco as Fredo
Miley Cyrus as Connie

This may make less money than Transcendence. Why would anyone go to this? Although if they want to take at shot at Godfather III I wouldn't object too much.

I like Depp. I can't picture him in these movies, but if the trailer make him look respectable I would give it ago.

Still......., perhaps a Movie or three that should have been left alone.

People get so bent out of shape about this stuff. Just don't go see it. Aren't most gangster movies just Godfather knockoffs anyways?

Depp in a serious role always gets me to watch. Will be excited depending on the rest of the cast. Maybe bring back some people from the original - love it

I just get a kick out of how there is no originality anymore.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of books out there, start reading..... once you find something interesting make a screenplay and adapt.

I'm with swag. I don't get bent out of shape over these things, but I do opine :). I actually don't go to the movie theaters very often to watch the blockbusters. Why pay $10/head to see something you're tentative about if the internet will tell you how good or bad it is and you can watch it from the comfort of your home within a year?

This I understand and it used to really bug me (especially after I watched a great original flick). But after you see the success of the remakes it's hard to say I wouldn't do the same thing if I was running a studio

It's completely understandable on their part. People will pay to watch this. And the next two if they do a decent enough job. But I still react with a Dave-Attell-cadence "WHYYYYYY?"

Not sure if this will turn out well or not, but the clips I have seen of Depp as Whitey Bulger look pretty bad ass.

The thing about the original is that it wasn't all blood and gore. They did the little stuff as well as any film did. I offer the below as an example....

First, I am fully willing to admit that the Godfather (and part 2) is a work of art.

However, I never really liked watching it. I've always thought it was a bit boring. I've tried watching numerous times since I saw it the first time, probably around '83 or so (I was 14). I can never make it all the way through it, I have to find something else to watch.

I tend to think there are a few movies that are so perfect you don't remake them. The first two Godfathers are exactly that.

You can remake a True Grit because the original was far from perfect. Star Trek reboots, same thing.

But The Godfather...this IS Hollywood going for a sure cash grab only. There is "no new ground" to mine.

It's going to be set in 2016 not 1946! Wow this not going to be good

Completely different movie in that case. There's very little in the original that works in a world 70 years older. Heck, you have to throw out the scene Soy posted...what would a 2016 Don Corleone refuse to get involved in?

I bet they could make both Godfather I and II better by adding a wacky neighbor.

Some movies need to be remade. Think Jobs and (my candidate) Unbroken.

Godfather II is the best movie of the last century. If any of the old cast, or Coppola have anything to do with this, I will not forgive them.

Philippian sex trafficking of minors!

I totally understand your opinion on the two movies. They are both at times really slooooow and a little mundane for a "feature" film. Having said that, both one and two are in my top five movies of all time.

I tend to believe that for each remake there is a wonderful story out there somewhere that doesn't get told.

Ok, maybe not each and every time. But I wonder what we'd be talking about if some remake didn't kill it?
