This loss is on this coaching staff. No one else.

THIS.

Look, I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to get some better athletes in here, but we had a damn good team this year that should have had all of the makings of a deep run in March.

This team should not have been blown out by Oregon today. This wasn’t Gonzaga or Baylor FFS. And people on here act like it has nothing to do with Fran. It’s just because Oregon has better athletes? IMO, Iowa is the better team. They’ve been the better team all year long. They were 5.5 pt favorites. Getting blown out in this game is inexcusable.

Maybe your impression of who the better team is, was mistaken? How much PASC 12 BB did you watch this year? Oregon was the P12 regular season champ......They made EVERYTHING they threw at the basket today...that stuff happens....but to think Iowa "was the better team" just is subjective as hell......Dana Altman is one GREAT basketball coach...he has been tremendously successful EVERYWHERE he has been....Do I wish Iowa would have won? You bet.....but did I believe Iowa was in for a dog fight today...Yes I did. After the first round, about 90% of the games played are toss-ups.

I feel bad that your post will probably get blasted by someone here. It shouldn't... everything you said was spot on
Thanks..I just feel like if you put this exact team on Wisconsin, with their coaching staff(shudder), are they really getting run out of the gym against Oregon? I have a tough time believing that would have been the case. It’s definitely possible we get beat, but I don’t see anyway we get blown out like we did.

Hell, I feel like Wisconsin’s actual team, a team we beat 3 times this year, would have put up a much better fight against Oregon than we did.

I thought we were in for a dog fight today as well. What we got wasn’t a dog fight, it was a blowout, and simply didn’t need to be with better coaching and a better game plan.

I’m not the only one that thought Iowa was the better team. The oddsmakers had Iowa as 5.5 point favorites. If these 2 teams played again tomorrow, Iowa would likely still open as favorites.

Oregon is a great team and the PAC 12 is way better than anyone thought. We had some injuries, and got sideways at the end of the first half. It sucks, I loved this team, but it is what it is. No need to go scorched earth after this one.

I first want to start off saying I appreciate what Fran has done at Iowa. I will never forget the Lickliter days, as much as I would like to, and appreciate Fran getting us back to being a tourney team, BUT, this loss is on him and the coaches.

I see everyone bitching about our slow guards and needing to recruit more athletic players. I get it. But I honestly feel like THIS Iowa team wins this game with a better coach.

You think Porter Moser loses this game with this exact team? Not a ****ing chance in hell.

Trying to run with this team was just plain idiotic from the get go. Slow the game down. Walk the ball up the court. Feed Garza EVERY possession and run the offense through him. Get Oregon in foul trouble and force them to double Garza.

Really unfortunate that Fran decided to try and play up tempo against a team far more athletic than us. Our best team in 20+ years is out in the second round. ****.

This loss is on injuries.... What a joke to post this bullshit....

It was no blowout until late in the 1st half.....shit happens! But Oregon understood how to beat Iowa...and it has very little with "stopping" Garza.....it is more about nullifying his supporting staff. And it seems to work.

My ass. We had 3 starters go scoreless. A healthy Connor scores 3 pts. Yes, CJ being at 80% or whatever is not ideal. Fran knew this ahead of time. So your game plan after sitting down with your coaches is then to try to outrun the other team? Absolutely brilliant. Fran knows one way to play. Tell me about all the athletes Loyola has? Jesus Christ game plan. We’ve lost the best player possibly ever in the program, and also Weiskamp probably not coming back.

1. Zone defense all first half gave Oregon all the open shots needed to build confidence. The same zone we abandoned during the season and got significantly better.

2. Lineups. Why not let the starters get it going together a little more. Lover Perkins and Ulis for the future but this probably wasn't the time for them to see significant minutes when we still had a chance to make a run.

Oregon was on fire too. We gave them open shots, they hit em.
Seriously? Fran had NO choice at all but to remove CJF, Connor, and Jbo. They were getting destroyed on BOTH ends of the floor by the Ducks athletic 6'6" guards. I was yelling early on for him to make the change. CJF isn't 100% and he couldn't keep up on either end of the floor. It was brutal. Jbo couldn't get open for a shot, and when he did he barely drew iron, and we know he can't guard anyone that big and fast. The bench gave us some lift in the first half. Unfortuantely Keegen struggled as well.

Good post. No clue how Iowa could have been favored. I told my brother before tip off that Altman is smart enough to know Garza can't beat him. Let him get his 30+ and shut down Iowa's guards by playing up on them. For those of us old enough to remember, watching Iowa in these games is liking watching the Dream Teams playing in the Olympics back in the day.

This is certainly the plan for beating Iowa. Iowa lost most every game where Luka scored 35 to 44 points, against a decent team. And thats not on the big fella either.

Iowa’s defense seems to be predicated on the other team missing shots. Oregon didn’t miss many.
The Ducks were more athletic at every position. Hats off to them.

I checked the stats at halftime. Four of their starters had two fouls at that point. At the end of the game one of those players had three fouls and the other three still only had two. No way we should have tried running with them. Keep the pace slow & pound the ball into Garza.

When Iowa played m-m in the first half they were getting beat to the basket sometimes, but they were forcing misses on three point attempts and were preventing second chance points. They went to the zone on a regular basis a few minutes before half and the Ducks went crazy and it never stopped. Also noticed that even in the zone, we still gave up drives to the rim. The zone sucked all year and again today. Not sure they could have won playing m-m, but maybe could have kept the Ducks from getting hot. Great game by Luka, but no help!

Iowa stayed in the game with fast break points in the first half. Altman made that a point of emphasis at half and his team responded. Fran said rebounding and/ or getting stops were points of emphasis and the team had no response. Why? Because one team was athletically capable of responding and the other wasn't. Oregon guards gave a jab step and they were gone either to drive for a dunk or kick to a wide open guy who could shoot it or pass to one of a couple other guys who were also wide open. Meanwhile Iowa couldn't get a shooter even a crappy look until the game was out of hand.

Oregon scored 95 points today against Iowa. The Hawks
did not play a smart defense and got burned. If our guys
cannot play man to man, then they belong on the bench.
We had 3 starters who should have been replaced sooner
and given our athletic players like Keegan Murray and Joe
Touisaint and others more court time.

Now Coach Fran tells us that Conner needs both hips
replaced. So why has he gotten so many minutes of
playing time in the last 10 games?

Not hard to have a great shooting game when half your shots are dunks!! Not playing defense is the coaches fault, playing players who don’t belong on the court is the coaches fault, playing your kids over more talented players is just wrong. Connor should quit and go play baseball, he is awful! That is being nice. I have a feeling a couple of these youngsters will be gone. Not much to come back too. Another mediocre athletic program ran by a wanna be coach!

Maybe the Brands brothers could help him out...

This is the correct take. Blaming coaching on what we saw today is lazy and stupidity.
Dude, they gave up 56 fuggin points in a half. Not sure how many more open 3's and uncontested dunks it would have taken for you to hold the coaches accountable....I get Iowa fans really have no idea what good defense looks like but that was awful and what Fran is known for. Personnel is part of the problem and I know injuries didn't help but shit defensive philosophy and execution is why Iowa had no chance. It's not an accident they are in the 200's for opponent 3 pt pct....it's a product of unathletic guards who are unable to get out and contest. 80 was enough to win had they played respectable defense

And you are so damn Fran blind that only the coach could be the problem.

You saw the laundry list of injuries we have/had correct? We waving a magic wand and making them healthy yesterday or something? Please. There was no stopping Oregon. If they had a tough battle vs VCU 1 day before I highly doubt they hit all the shots they did.
