This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Obviously big news, if true, since Iranian drone attacks on Ukraine power systems has been virtually Russia's only offensive capability for the past several months. Ukraine is announcing this.
Maybe the mullahs didn't want any more IOUs? Supposedly the Russians were paying in hard currency, and technology. They might not have much of either left, and the Iranian leaders, even though they are evil, aren't stupid. Don't double down on a loser bet.

I would expect most civilians who wanted to see Kherson be part of Russia evacuated, while those who wanted to stay in Ukraine remained.
Good point. Kherson has much more divided support than Luhansk and Donetsk too.. according to this youtuber recorded on location in Kherson about two months ago. He says the situation is "quite a bit different" and support was divided in Kherson. Kherson wasn't part of the Donbas war.

Please retake Crimea!
Somewhere in the bowels of HROT there is a Lucas80 book review of Where The Iron Crosses Grow, by Robert Forczyk. It's about the brutal slog for several years between the Germans and Soviets on the Crimean peninsula. Ukraine doesn't have the manpower to dislodge the Russians if they bury in like ticks, as I suspect they are going to do. The entrance to the peninsula is extremely narrow, and rugged. The only way the Russians are leaving is via a popular uprising, and the Russians have spent decades purging Crimea of Ukrainians. Now, maybe the Russian civilians beat feat, and the soldiers follow?

They still need water from the mainland. Starve them out and rain down HIMARS on their stupid heads. They can choose not to leave but it will be under perpetual threat of an excruciating death.

This isn’t the 1940’s. As long as the west keeps resupplying, Ukraine can have whatever they want in the end.
