This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Russians want to make this winter as painful as possible for Ukrainians.

Terror bombing hasn't really worked in previous conflicts...

Japanese and German cities were totally obliterated but they kept fighting. People are more resilient than they're given credit for by military strategists....

People don't give up when family and friends get killed...they get pissed off and fight harder.

I was told walls don't work and are racist if a U.S. President tries to construct one along our southern border for our own national security interests.

I assume then the Biden administration is 100% totally against this wall and will provide zero U.S. taxpayers dollars to Ukraine for wall construction purposes.

Quality analogy there. Amazing deep thinking.

Outstanding!!

They will if they think Ukraine is trying to pull NATO into the conflict. Already have some wavering support in NATO.
If it was determined that Ukraine shot the missile into Poland on purpose to raise a response then I agree. If it's just him begging for more assistance because his country is getting hammered by missiles intended to freeze civilians, then he won't. Any good leader would be pushing for more support there.

The USSR in the face of German aggression isn't the best example because Stalin made things worse, but, yeah, Putin seems to not understand his own history.

As the first full winter of Russia’s war with Ukraine sets in, the US is running low on some high-end weapons systems and ammunition available to transfer to Kyiv, three US officials with direct knowledge tell CNN.

The strain on weapons stockpiles – and the ability of the US industrial base to keep up with demand – is one of the key challenges facing the Biden administration as the US continues to send billions of dollars of weapons to Ukraine to support its fight against Russia. One of the officials said the stockpiles of certain systems are “dwindling” after nearly nine months of sending supplies to Kyiv during the high-intensity war, as there’s “finite amount” of excess stocks which the US has available to send.

Among the weapons systems where there’s particular concern about US stockpiles meeting Ukrainian demands are 155mm artillery ammunition and Stinger anti-aircraft shoulder-fired missiles, the sources said.

I think this means Ukraine has control all along the right bank of the river now. It will be interesting to see if the Russian dead (and captured) finally surges.

It’s harder to bullshit people in Eastern Europe about the efficacy of border barriers.
They have living memory of them.
So, shooting any person who tries to cross the wall is how we would make it work on the southern border? That’s something that may work in an active war zone, but who will man that wall and shoot any man, woman or child trying to cross?

Ukrainians are seeking collaborators like teachers who agreed to teach in Russian, a Russian curriculum and other government employees who provide services. Most residents in the occupied territories speak Russian as a first language or Russian only so these types of policies/laws cause resentment. Zelensky ran and won ovewhelmingly in 2019 on ending divisive cultural policies and ending the Donbas war but his approval dropped to 24% in 2021.

Russian officials came to Ina Mandryka with a simple proposition: If she agreed to open her school in a town in occupied territory, and teach in Russian, she would be promoted from deputy principal to principal.

For Ms. Mandryka, it was an easy choice. “I refused,” she said. “To teach the Russian curriculum is a crime.” The school, with its classrooms festooned in colorful pictures of giraffes and bears, remained closed.

Iryna Overedna, a second-grade teacher in the city of Izium, made a different choice. “The teacher in me thought, ‘The children should be in school,’” Ms. Overedna said. Besides, she said, she needed a salary to feed her family. She traveled to Kursk, in southwestern Russia, to study the new curriculum.

But the status of many activities is not necessarily clear-cut, because they are intertwined with everyday life. Ukrainian authorities, for instance, do not view doctors, firefighters and employees of utility companies as traitors because their jobs are considered essential to the functioning of a town. But police officers, municipal and regional government employees and some teachers who agreed to work under the Russian educational curriculum are classed as collaborators.

I don’t think Border Patrol makes a habit of shooting those they apprehend, or attempt to apprehend.

Currently hundreds die trying to cross illegally.
I think fewer would die if there wasn’t a perception you can simply walk/wade across.

Way, way more people died in just the last year trying to illegally enter the U.S. than died in the entire history of trying to escape the Berlin Wall.

Nearly 750 migrants have died at the southern border this fiscal year, a record that surpasses last year's total by more than 200 people, according to Department of Homeland Security figures shared with CNN.

But it’s the threat of being shot that made that wall effective. So, who is going to stand on that wall and do the shooting?

Why would they need to shoot instead of apprehend, unless the invader presented imminent threat to their lives or someone else’s?

But let’s assume your position, that the only enforcement is opening fire.
If you advertised a paid position to shoot people illegally entering the country, do you really think no one would sign up?

Shooting and missing is a very effective deterrent...
