This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

F Putin and Russia

Agreed, EU & US should be freezing all known Russian oligarchs assets indefinitely. There is zero chance a good portion of these criminals will not be seeking profiteering by invading and flipping Ukraine to pro-Putin politics. They should be held liable for war crimes and stand trial along with Russian military members. Their assets are forfeit.

The sanctions need to get tougher. Remove Russia from SWIFT. If they kill Zelensky, start freezing property of all Russian nationals.

And Belarus, too.
I was reading more about SWIFT from this AP article. Sounds like banning Russia from SWIFT won't be some magic bullet. It's only a messaging system. It doesn't actually pass money between parties. For example, fax, email, phone, etc. could still be used to communicate transactions between parties. In addition, banning Russia from SWIFT could further incentivize development of alternative systems. It could just be that the sanctions on the banks from dealing in dollars, euros, pounds and yen will be more effective. Now, it could be that we'd want to drive the bad guys into their own system so we can hack it, etc., but that probably needs some additional analysis.

Russia will take Kyiv, but the real war is going to be the ongoing insurgency. Gen. Patraeus said Russia is will be trying to "swallow a porcupine".
Yep and I have seen enough to believe that already they have suffered way more losses than expected. 64k question is how low of moral are the troops, being forced to kill people they view as not really bad guys and former countrymen. Things could really fall apart if some of them start surrendering.

Accepting entirely your logic that aggressors must be punished why shouldn’t we do the same to Saudi Arabia for their invasion and slaughter in Yemen?
What’s different in the calculus?
Saudi is not threatening the peace and security of Europe. Yemeni Houthis are basically Iran's proxy. Huge difference.

They’re still weak. There’s been reluctance to commit to the sanctions we’ve committed to. They don’t want to remove Russia from the banking system and having their nat gas cut off.
I've heard some analysts say that cutting Russia out of the banking system wouldn't have the effect we hope it would. Basically, they have alternative methods of doing transactions and it takes away power from the west to cut them out (and makes their system stronger). I know very little about all this, but it isn't as simple as it seems.

We'll see. They average troops are conscripts. That will likely play a role as well.

Correct. I think sanctioning all the Russian banks from dealing in dollars, euros, pounds, and yen probably has more impact.

The area know today as Kaliningrad was formerly Prussian Koenigsberg.

The British Empire used to be most of the world

But they ain't invading anybody, today....

1000+

dont know how reliable but this guy been on a tear since the start.

That seems hard to believe. But if true guarantee this was far more resistance than they expected and Ukraine had a Bigly plan in place. And it absolutely could cause Putin to want to negotiate and cause low moral conscripts to stop fighting.

I'm guessing Biden has held off sanctioning Putin directly because he wants Putin's lackeys to think about their loyalty to him. They suffer sanctions while Putin doesn't. I don't know. It might be trying to thread the needle a little too "finely".

Just a guess on my part. Probably makes sense to just hit him now.

But US Intelligence suggests the city will fall in only 1-4 days. Their President should have called up reserves and formed citizens brigades months ago when they had the time. Wonder if the government thought doing so would have brought the Russians earlier or if the people in charge were just in denial.

For context, Poland held out against the Germans (then backstabbing Soviet Union) for about 6 weeks.
They did call up troops. The reality is there is just no way Ukraine can hold onto any given location against the forces they are against. The war is the insurgency that's going to happen after Russia occupies the country.

C'mon. We are not Putin's bitch. Full stop. You really want to send thousands of Americans to Ukraine right now?

No we should have sent HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of troops to Ukraine before Putin invaded.

And we are Putin's bitch. Because every time he plays chicken with us, we flitch and he does what he wants.

He just attacked a democratically elected government and we're just gonna let him cause we're too scared.

A President remaining in the capital despite the threat of immediate execution if captured. An armed former President refusing to yield or flee. An armed, celebrity mayor and his celebrity brother taking up arms and joining the fight. The Snake Island holdouts. There are so many brave and admirable acts taking place among the Ukrainians right now. I’m not a parent, but if I was, I’d be sure to make sure these acts of selflessness struck a chord with my children. These are the sorts of deeds that great people exhibit.

Ukrainians are dying in their streets but it’s too controversial or painful for the west to kick Russia out of Swift?

pathetic…
We should be freezing all Russian nationals assets, kick them out of Swift, cut off their Internet access,

Sink the oligarchs yachts

If they're on the open seas, take them out.
Use air power, if needed, so they have no time to radio anyone.

Glad you aren't making the decisions. Let's see what happens if he puts a foot into Poland. I didn't figure you one for wanting us to police the world and put thousands of American men and women in harms way.

Putin's bitch...lol.

I think there is a hard line drawn at Poland. If Putin did this he could expect to see attacks on his own motherland and not just a case of US helping to defend Poland.

Russia in Poland? The gloves come off.

WW III will be fought with tanks and missiles and machine guns and nukes
WW IV will be fought with sticks and stones

I have heard rumors for weeks we may have some elite forces embedded from the US and a few other NATO countries. Add to that perhaps sneaking in some very good small scale air support and and javelins and it may be helping things. One thing surprising me is lack of air strikes and bombing so far. It perhaps indicates they found out real quick they could not secure the sky as quick as thought.
