This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

A reminder of what Ukraine is using old Soviet era drones for and may have been the weapon in the refinery attack.

"Maybe the Ukrainians used it now for reconnaissance, but most likely as false targets to distract the attention of air defense and aviation. In Croatia, there was probably a control system failure, and he just flew in a straight line, and when he ran out of fuel, he fell," Ermakov said.

In turn, retired Air Force Major General, former head of the Federal Department of Aerospace Search and Rescue at the Ministry of Defense Vladimir Popov believes that the Tu-141 could have been equipped with a warhead and used as a strike drone.

"A container with intelligence equipment can be removed, and, for example, some small-sized bomb can be put there. And it will be an attack drone, much faster than the Bayraktar or other modern aircraft. They have a flight speed of 200-300 km / h, and this one flies on a jet engine at a speed of 650-800 km / h. The inertia of the flight and the engine and the mass of the drone itself - the impact force is great," Popov stressed."

The situation in the city of Bakhmut, on the eastern frontline, is becoming "more and more difficult", Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Russian forces have been trying to take the city for over six months.
"The enemy is constantly destroying everything that can be used to protect our positions", Mr Zelensky stated.
The Ukrainian leader's remarks came as US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned China against arming Russia during a visit to Kyiv on Monday.

Some of the fiercest fighting to take place since Russia invaded Ukraine just over a year ago has taken place in Bakhmut, in Ukraine's Donetsk region, part of which is under the control of Russia and its separatist allies.
Recently efforts by Russian forces to capture the industrial city have intensified, with its troops gaining ground.

The separatist leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, said "practically all roads" into the city were "under [Russian] fire control".
And the commander of Ukraine's ground forces, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, said the situation around Bakhmut was "extremely tense".
"Despite significant losses, the enemy threw in the most prepared assault units of Wagner, who are trying to break through the defences of our troops and surround the city," Gen Syrskyi said.
Speaking about the situation in his nightly address, President Zelensky said managing to gain a foothold in Bakhmut and ensuring its defence were being heavily compromised by Russia's renewed onslaught.
He was "grateful to each and every person who is heroically holding" the area.
President Zelensky also called once again for modern combat aircraft to be sent so that "the entire territory of our country" can be defended from "Russian terror".

KYIV, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Russian forces on Tuesday pressed forward their weeks-long drive to encircle and capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut where the commander of Ukraine's ground forces described the situation as "extremely tense".

The Russian troops, including mercenary fighters from the Wagner Group, are trying to cut the Ukrainian defenders' supply lines to the city, scene of some of the war's bloodiest battles, and force them to surrender or withdraw.

That would give Russia its first major prize in more than half a year and open the way to the capture of the last remaining urban centres in the Donetsk region, one of four which Moscow claims to have annexed in what it calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

"Despite significant losses, the enemy threw in the most prepared assault units of Wagner, who are trying to break through the defences of our troops and surround the city," Ukraine's Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a statement.

An unnamed soldier from Ukraine's 93rd Separate Mechanised Brigade, speaking on the Telegram messaging app as explosions boomed in the background, struck a defiant note: "February 28, the town of Bakhmut. The city is on fire, the enemy is pressing. Everything will be Ukraine..."

Let's just hope the Russians are bleeding themselves out around Bakhmut. Hopefully setting themselves up for some pain in the spring....
Ukraine is said to have even stronger defenses in the hills just beyond that area. I agree that they are mainly trying to bleed Russia at this point.

"Yehor Cherniev, a Ukrainian lawmaker and head of the Ukrainian delegation to the NATO parliamentary assembly, tells TIME that although Bakhmut “is not of strategic importance” to Kyiv, they will nonetheless “try to hold it as long as possible.”

“We are gradually grinding down the most combat-ready units of the Russians,” says Cherniev. “Regardless of the future fate of Bakhmut, we managed to win precious time. In our next counter-offensive campaign, we will return much more.”

Hird and Kofman agree that while the loss of Bakhmut would be symbolically damaging for Ukraine, which is loath to cede any of its territory to Russia, it wouldn’t have a meaningful impact on Kyiv’s war effort. “Bakhmut in and of itself isn’t that significant,” says Kofman, noting that even if Russian forces were to march onward toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, they would run into yet another, even more fortified Ukrainian defensive line."

I agree for the most part but as a note of caution…the Russian military was a mess during the Finland invasion in 1940. They were a hot mess during the initial stages of Barbarossa and really didn’t get their shit together until late 1942.

Took what looked like unsurvivable losses in the process.

Not a totally apt comparison because it was mother Russia getting invaded and they had western support.
They were a mess until what happened?

US lend lease giving them tens of thousands of tanks and planes and vehicles and modern arms.

Now, they face the reverse, with their adversary being the one supplied and armed by America and NATO.

Talking about tactics and competency. At start of WW2 the Russian military was like it is now...top down...lack of initiative of command. Stalin loosened things up out of necessity. Really suffered because of the military purges Stalin instituted in the mid 30's....got rid of "threats" and installed lachey's.

Kind of see these same thing now. Hopefully the Russian leadership (Putin) doesn't learn and adapt. Can't count on that in perpetuity though. Eventually they may wise up.

You’d think that Russians would figure out that a madman was sacrificing their young men at a rate they cannot afford.
I read an article just yesterday about how thousands of middle and upper middle young men and women have already left Russia for countries where no visas are needed. Argentina was mentioned as being popular because like America if you give birth there your baby is automatically a citizen and you’re allowed to stay and work and apply for citizenship in just two years. Pregnant couples from Russia have begun flocking there by the thousands. The language barrier and the inflation there aren’t seen as huge obstacles and the men aren’t in danger of dying on a field in Ukraine.

Reports are that 60 million Russians died in WWII and it ain’t because the Germans killed all of them. Stalin didn’t care how many starved or were friendly casualties. Putin has apparently dusted off Ol Joe’s notebook.

Putin needs to find a Zhukov or Konev.

I don't think he has one...hopefully. Seems he just has a bunch of incompetent boobs that don't want to piss him off.
