This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Yep....I was hoping the Russians would eventually collapse in Ukraine.

A "normal" military probably collapses with the casualties they've taken in an offensive action. I could see it if you're defending your territory....but this is nuts.
I mean, once you've lost 12 to 20 million people in one war, I guess your tolerance is nearly infinite.

I guess if the choices are summary execution for disobeying orders, and taking your chances that you won't get killed by Ukrainian forces, you take your chances.

I guess putting on my devil's advocate hat, Wagner group has lines set up up where the execute those retreating or trying to surrender. Not sure if the Russian Army has the same thing, but it would not surprise me.
Wouldn’t surprise me. Crazy town

What I don't understand is why we aren't seeing mass-surrenders.

At this point, it must be obvious to even the drunkest stupidest vatnik that their chances of being treated humanely by Ukrainian captors is better than how they will be treated by their Russian officers and politicians.

If I were sent to attack Bahkmut, I'd take my first opportunity to wave a white flag and GTFO of the war.

I've read that the terrain just to the west of the city is even better for defensive purposes, made up of high ground and hills.

Modern day Stalingrad...

NEAR CHASIV YAR, Ukraine, March 1 (Reuters) - Russian forces carried out relentless attacks on Bakhmut on Wednesday, trying to encircle and storm the small eastern Ukrainian city and claim their first major prize for more than half a year after some of the bloodiest fighting of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Moscow of throwing waves of men into battle in Bakhmut with no regard for their lives, and said the fighting was "most difficult" but the city's defence essential.

"The enemy continues to advance. The assault on the city of Bakhmut continues," the general staff of Ukraine's armed forces said in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening.

The leader of Russia's Wagner mercenary group said the Ukrainians were putting up "furious resistance" trying to hold the city at all costs.

Russia also said it had repelled a massive drone attack on Crimea, the peninsula its forces seized from Ukraine and claimed to annex in 2014. On Tuesday Moscow accused Kyiv of launching a series of drone strikes on targets in Russia itself.

Reuters was able to reach Bakhmut from the west on Monday - proof the city was not yet surrounded despite Russian forces pressing from north and south to close the last access routes.

Flames and smoke rose into the sky from blazing buildings. Constant gunfire and explosions rang out into the sky. Ukrainian armoured vehicles roared through the streets, while stray dogs wandered amid the mud and debris.

I wonder if the Ukrainian commander who got fired wanted to withdraw to the next defensive line. There have been rumors that the US has suggested that. The good news is that if Ukraine can mount their offensive, it should be against a weaker Russian army.

So, shoot them first, then surrender.

Hopefully. The question that we don’t know is how much damage the Ukrainians are taking. We know their artillery stocks are low.

We do know the Russians are being butchered.

It’s a numbers game. Sounds callous but it is what it is…

The Russians have more men….is the exchange rate 3:1? That’s a “winning rate”.

A podcast I listen two had an interview with a reporter that went to Bahkmut and from his interviews with troops he thought the rate was closer to 2 to 1 which if true…makes things more dicey. Given the overall troop level disparity.

Who knows…the Ukrainians are pretty tight lipped about it for obvious reasons.

1.9 million barrels of Russian diesel is sailing the world’s oceans with no buyer. Sanctions and new restrictions are taking a bite coupled with a mild winter in Europe. Not linking, but I came across another story stating that Russia has announced production cuts.

WOW!! Popular Mechanics story about Russia pulling 1950s era APC and amphibious tanks out of storage. Long story short, they are death traps to anything but light shrapnel and small arms fire. It’s mentioned that Russia may intend to use some to cross rivers during an offensive, but the seal integrity to keep them from sinking like rocks is an issue.

This is what I’m worried about as the war drags on.
