This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

But I've also read where they are not able to do so due to their Constitution and perhaps lack of support from other Western countries.

"Now, NATO member Slovakia could become the first country to send fighter jets to Ukraine. "It should not matter if we're the first, because when it comes to doing the right thing, we are rarely the first," said caretaker Prime Minister Eduard Heger.

Indeed, what Slovakia does next is of key importance because it could affect the way other countries help Ukraine. However, supplying the jets will not be easy as the Slovak constitution seems to block such a move by a caretaker government and the opposition is not yet convinced that supplying jets is a good idea."

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian military might pull troops back from the key stronghold of Bakhmut, an adviser to Ukraine’s president said Wednesday in remarks that suggested Russia could capture the city that has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.

Kremlin forces have waged a bloody, monthslong offensive to take Bakhmut, a city of salt and gypsum mines in eastern Ukraine that has become a ghost town.

“Our military is obviously going to weigh all of the options. So far, they’ve held the city, but if need be, they will strategically pull back,” Alexander Rodnyansky, an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told CNN. “We’re not going to sacrifice all of our people just for nothing.”

US does not expect significant Russian gains in the next year, says Pentagon official

A senior Pentagon official has said the US did not expect Russia to make significant territorial gains in Ukraine in the near term and described the frontlines of the war as a “grinding slog”.

Colin Kahl, the US undersecretary of defence for policy, told a House of Representatives hearing today:

You may see small portions of territory change hands in the coming weeks and months. I do not think that there’s anything I see that suggests the Russians can sweep across Ukraine and make significant territorial gains anytime in the next year or so.
Kahl was asked repeatedly by US lawmakers about sending the jets to Ukraine, Reuters reports. He replied:

It is a priority for the Ukrainians, but it is not one of their top three priorities.

I am a little concerned about the current false flag operation Russia is pulling right now with the fake raids and hostage taking they are calling terrorist attack. With depleted forces and equipment what is their endgame here, using WMD?

The battle for Bahkmut is under reported on cable news IMO. Was surfing around and just haven't seen it mentioned.

It's a pretty titanic battle...

Online I'm finding plenty of stories...just find it strange cable isn't really talking about it.

Some conflicting reporting but it seems the Ukrainians are putting up a pretty damned heroic defense while struggling with a artillery ammunition shortage.

Ukrainian forces hung onto their positions in the ruined eastern city of Bakhmut early on Thursday under constant attack from Russian troops seeking to claim their first major victory for more than half a year.

Russia says seizing Bakhmut would open the way to fully controlling the rest of the strategic eastern Donbas industrial region, one of the main objectives of its invasion a year ago.

Delivering a regular morning roundup of the situation across the frontlines, the Ukrainian military's general staff said on Thursday that the enemy was continuing to advance toward Bakhmut and “is storming the city.”

It said Ukrainian forces were repelling attacks in Bakhmut and in other settlements in the Donetsk region that were coming under fire.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that his forces “are keeping each sector of the front under control.”

Hopefully mother nature continues with an assist for Ukraine in holding off advances on Bakhmut until more western weapons/tanks have a chance to be brought into the fold...

What I don't understand is why we aren't seeing mass-surrenders.

At this point, it must be obvious to even the drunkest stupidest vatnik that their chances of being treated humanely by Ukrainian captors is better than how they will be treated by their Russian officers and politicians.

If I were sent to attack Bahkmut, I'd take my first opportunity to wave a white flag and GTFO of the war.
To surrender would mean eventually being exchanged back to Russia. Better to go AWOL

Right now for Ukraine the best defense is a good offense, strike the Russian mother land and let them know what war on their turf really feels like.

The Ukraine doesn't even need to win, they just need to keep being a pest and wait Russia out as they burn through resources and men.

"Cable" is too focused on trans-children being provided basic medical care here...
And "CRT in gradeschools".

Russia won't run out of men

They will run out of armor/resources, and still have not solved their supply line issues. Longer range weapons for Ukraine will further hamper that.

You cut off supply for the Crimean forces, and Crimea falls. It'll take time, but it's not defensible for the Russians if they cannot resupply it.
