This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

This particular response from Russia does not surprise me so I would wager it damn sure is not a surprise to Ukraine leadership. We knew Ukraine would take a few on the chin and get knocked down but I think it only hardens their resolve for the coming offensive. Sure hope Ukraine counter punches with something massive.

Might be time for mothers and children to head out of Ukraine as the intensity of the war is ramping up. Over 300,000 Ukrainians in the USA already. I expect that number to increase as the war drags on.

It does look bad. This is just propaganda but at least one tweet is claiming the destruction of 2 divisions! And Russia wonders why no one takes them seriously.
I have no doubt they hit something, but I also doubt that after 14 months of incompetence the Russians delivered an effective coordinated attack. And, again, this strike was long range cruise missiles from bases a thousand miles behind the front lines.

Interesting to look at the O'lenya air base via Google.
1. I know a guy who was stationed at Minot for 2 years. O'lenya makes Minot look like Vegas.
2. If you cruise around the base even on commercially available Google you can see what appear to be a section of tarmac overflowing with jets in various states of disrepair. True there could be some vagaries in overlay of the images, but some of them look haphazardly parked too close to each other, and like they haven't moved in years.

Speaking of Google Maps. They have some updated pictures of Ukraine since the war started. You can see a lot of the devastation to Mariupol in the aerials. And if you have Google Earth, you can turn on historical mode to see before and after pictures.

"KYIV, May 1 (Reuters) - Ukrainian counterattacks have ousted Russian forces from some positions in the besieged eastern city of Bakhmut, but the situation remains "difficult", a top Ukrainian general said in comments released Monday.

During the past few months the battle for Bakhmut has become the fulcrum of a conflict that has seen little shift in front lines since late last year, leaving both sides looking for a breakthrough."

Here is 100% what happened. Putler had a fit about the huge hit on the Crimea fuel depot so they targeted this known area that they knew would not likely be guarded by air defense to create a huge boom they could then report back as a BS strike that wiped out a tone of Ukraine weapons and forces. The propaganda and claims were pretty fast. The ecological disaster was just a bonus.
