Sherman instead detached Thomas to go after him, looked around and realized there was nothing else in the area that could stop him. As a result he marched to the sea, and essentially broke the back of the confederacy.
Japan meanwhile, similar to Russia now, had major logistical issues. No one in their right mind launches an invasion without a secure supply line for at least the bare essentials.
