This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

The head of the Wagner group said Saturday he has ordered his mercenaries to halt their march on Moscow and retreat to their field camps in Ukraine to avoid shedding Russian blood.

The announcement from Yevgeny Prigozhin appeared to defuse a dramatically escalating crisis that represented the most significant challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s leadership in his more than two decades in power. Moscow had braced for the arrival of the private army led by the rebellious commander while Putin had vowed that Prigozhin would face harsh consequences.

Prigozhin didn’t say whether the Kremlin had responded to his demand to oust Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. There was no immediate comment from the Kremlin.

The announcement followed a statement from the office of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko saying that he had negotiated a deal with Prigozhin after previously discussing the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Someone posted earlier in this thread about a scenario where this action allows Putin to fire Shoigu and Gerasimov and claim they have Mis-managed and stolen from the military. He can claim they have lied about everything involving Ukraine, giving him the chance for an exit ramp and still retain power. Sorry I cannot remember the HORT member who posted but this seems even more plausible now.

If Shoigu and Gerasimov are purged then how do we reconcile the FSB detaining former Wagner mercs? Or maybe it’s a timing issue?

The only way Wagner turns around is if Prigozhin gets a combo of Wagner immunity, money and power. So I don’t think the last chapter will be written until we see Russia stand down on their persecution of current/former Wagner.

That might've been me.

Prigozhin always seemed at odds with Shoigu over munitions supplies and support. I think both always wanted to blame the other for any battlefield failures.

The Kremlin certainly seems to have made concessions to avoid further embarrassment today.
But bottom line is, at least in the short term, this chaos is helpful to Ukraine.

I am very curious about what role Lukashenko played. He isn't a Russian, so why, if any of this was real at all, does Prigozhin accept what Lukashenko says as trustworthy and legitimately backed up?

1) Putin’s invasion of Ukraine last year will go down in history as one of the biggest f*ckups & biggest miscalculations ever made by a major figure on the world’s stage.

2) Joe Biden’s response to Putin’s invasion, Biden’s strong defense of Ukraine, and Biden’s leadership in assembling a unified worldwide coalition to stand WITH Ukraine and stand AGAINST Russia will go down in history as one of the greatest defenses of freedom & sovereignty ever put together on the world’s stage.

3) The world is so fortunate Trump lost in 2020.

I read where Prigozhan stated that he has 25,000 mercenaries under his command. Is that really true? How is his whole operation funded?
They farm themselves out all over the world…Syria, Sudan, Lybia, Mozambique

In the movie version, this whole thing would have been orchestrated by the CIA and Lukashenko and Putin would both have been assassinated after their flights landed while fleeing. With the Rock saying 'welcome to hell muther****er' to pooty boy and taking him out with the people's elbow.

There's no way this is over. Prigozhen is a walking dead man right now unless he can get to Putin first. Putin just needed time to stop the march, but he will not let this go. I can't believe Prigozhen is buying this. Somebody is being stupid and someone else is waiting for the other to let his guard down or become distracted. Or they both are doing that.

Is that before or after the Biden administration encouraged Zelensky to flee Ukraine in the opening day of the war and surrender to Russia?

Biden didn’t make any correct decisions the decision to support Ukraine was forced upon him by Zelensky and the EU.

Revisionist history is always the best.

I think Putin cuts a deal with Prigozhin and sacks Shoigu and Gerasimov.

I don’t like the idea of Wagner taking control of the military response against Ukraine.
Although this might now be the case, maybe a former hotdog vendor may not be the greatest person making strategic decisions on the battlefield, for the entire army.
