This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

"By pulling out of a landmark deal that allowed Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea, Russian President Vladimir Putin is taking a gamble that could badly damage Moscow’s relations with many of its partners that have stayed neutral or even been supportive of the Kremlin’s invasion of its neighbor.

Russia also has played the role of spoiler at the United Nations, vetoing a resolution on extending humanitarian aid deliveries through a key border crossing in northwestern Syria and backing a push by Mali’s military junta to expel U.N. peacekeepers — abrupt moves that reflect Moscow’s readiness to raise the stakes elsewhere."

Well, look how bitchy they were about Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
Turkey is literally trying to play both sides in this. Erdogan fancies himself a regional power, and he wants Turkey to cash in post war. I am convinced he's fine with the war ending in a stalemate with Russia keeping what they've seized. As long as we need them in NATO, and regionally, we'll have to play Erdogan's games.
Well he got the 40 F-16's and upgrade kits out of it so far....wouldn't be shocked if Turkey all of a sudden gets their EU membership back on track as well....

Turkey and Erdogan are going to do what is in their interest. They always have.

I am amazed how ignorant most of the posters on here are about actual US military capabilities and our reliance on our allies. The ignorance doesn’t stop them from speaking with authority on things they know nothing about.

We will never sail a carrier group into the Black Sea without Turkeys permission. The Russian would see that as an act of war and use whatever means necessary to destroy it .

Not so fast....:)
WASHINGTON ― A key senator is refusing to lift his longstanding hold on the sale of 40 Block 70 F-16 fighter jets to Turkey despite the Biden administration’s announcement last week that it wants to move forward with the deal. The $20 billion potential sale also includes 80 modernization kits.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan said the sale would proceed last week after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced at the NATO summit in Lithuania that Turkey would ratify Sweden’s NATO accession bid. But Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., told Defense News on Tuesday that he continues to use his position as Foreign Relations Committee chairman to block the sale.

Thanks for that...

Turkey is so problematic. You would rather have them in your camp than not but they're a friggin pain in the ass.

This article provides a bit of perspective… https://www.defensenews.com/naval/2022/02/25/what-makes-the-black-sea-so-strategically-important/

There’s only one way in and out of the Black Sea. Russia regularly sends its ships and submarines in and out of the sea, surging forces there or sending its Black Sea Fleet into the Mediterranean Sea for local operations. Ukraine, unlike Russia, has no other fleets elsewhere, so there’s no backup coming from outside the Black Sea.

Which leads to the question: Who else may come and go from the Black Sea?

Due to Montreux Convention rules regarding the Bosporus and Dardanelles that connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, countries that sit on the Black Sea have unlimited access. Nonresident countries may only send ships in for short stints and are limited by ship size. So although NATO is not intervening militarily on Ukraine’s behalf, the Black Sea was always going to be a vulnerable spot for Ukraine.

In other words, if there were ever a body of water well suited for bullying your neighbor, it would be the Black Sea.

This doesn't say exactly where they are moving to. Wonder why they would send the Marines to this area since the Hormuz thing seems like a naval task only. Could these forces also be used to influence Russian moves in their south?

Ukraine war live updates: Zelenskyy sacks UK ambassador after media comments; U.S. says Ukraine now using cluster bombs

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday announced the dismissal of ambassador to the U.K. Vadym Prystaiko after he called comments Zelenskyy made about the U.K. defense minister unhealthy.

Zelenskyy issued a presidential order in which he did not specify a reason.

In other news, Russian missile and drone strikes on southern Ukraine and port areas continued for a fourth night Thursday, according to Ukrainian authorities, as the White House confirmed Ukraine has begun using U.S.-supplied cluster bombs in its defensive operations in Russia-occupied areas.

National security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters the U.S. had received feedback that the munitions, which arrived from the U.S. last week, were being used “effectively.”

In his daily address, Zelenskyy said nearly 70 missiles were fired at Odesa, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr and Kharkiv this week.

Since Monday, concerns have been growing over global food supplies following Russia’s suspension of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which has provided a key export route since July 2022.

Wheat prices have moved sharply higher as the European Union’s foreign policy chief warned the move could imperil global food security.

Tensions are also mounting in the Black Sea after Russia said it would consider all vessels sailing toward Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea as military cargo carriers. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said it “may” do the same from midnight Friday.
