This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

FWIW-kind of early to panic-it's only been a few days in office.

"Kremlin propagandists are sounding the alarm: they say Trump has not kept his word and has not stopped the war. Note that the Ukrainian media are silent about this, but the "great ones" have panicked. Putin is demanding security guarantees from Trump, effectively admitting that the US is a more powerful country than Russia."

Would not this be expected when the US has the largest military in the world?
I'm hoping the West can stick together and make up most of what the US was providing though they need to move to more of a war footing. IIRC the US defense budget is more than the next several countries combined which at this point in history is a good thing.

The plan to bring both sides to the negotiating table revolves around military aid for Ukraine? I can see how this forces Ukraine to table but not Russia. Putin seems content to continue to grind this out. What aid can America give that will force Putin to the table?

If the US gave Ukraine some of the thousands of surplus tanks and hundreds of airframes we have sitting out in the desert. Putin would know we are serious and that he cannot outlast the West. The West does not have the courage to do this.

Basically it’s going to grind on. Or until Trump doesn’t care.

More than 2,000 specialists from the Ukrainian Air Force could be reassigned to infantry and attack units, Ruslan Horbenko, a People’s Deputy from the “Servant of the People” party, said during an interview on the “Novyny.Life” TV channel on Thursday, Jan. 16.

However, these won’t be aircraft maintenance specialists, he added. Instead, servicemen from mobile firing groups trained to operate anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) weapons are the ones to be transferred to the Ground Forces.

The shift comes after the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, conducted the so-called audit of the troops and found that rifle battalions are only staffed at about 18-19%, while support units are much better stocked, up to 80-90%.

“To fix this, they’re moving people from the rear to combat positions,” Horbenko said.

May end up being crazy to do this. And this contradicts Zelensky who says they have plenty of manpower but not enough equipment to arm them.
WW2 buffs will recall after the Normandy invasion, that the US found itself short of riflemen (high casualties) and grabbed people from other units to turn into infantry.

It's why I don't like the argument about lower standards for some soldiers than others.
You never know when 6th SS Panzer Army will tear through your lines and suddenly the cooks are told to grab rifles and man foxholes.

Israel is talking about turning over Russian made weapons seized from Hamas and Hezbollah to Ukraine. Probably not a large amount, but it is symbolic. What might be more helpful is there are rumblings they may transfer some Patriot batteries to a front line nation like Romania which would allow them to give their batteries to Ukraine.
