As Title 42 is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday, security officials are bracing for what could be an unprecedented influx of migrants seeking asylum along the southern border.

The COVID-era public health emergency measure allowed for the quick expulsion of migrants at the border and nearly halted the processing of asylum applications for more than three years.

Once Title 42 is lifted, the tens of thousands of people who have been waiting in Mexico after fleeing from violence, poverty and political instability will be subject to decades-old immigration protocols known as Title 8.
Under those laws, individuals can no longer be turned away or deported without a screening for asylum claims. That means they'll enter the country and be placed in detention centers as they go through a process called expedited removal, which includes a credible fear interview. Those who are deemed to have valid claims will be allowed to stay in the country as their cases make their way through immigration court. Those who are not will be deported.

It’s like Black Friday at the border!

EL PASO, Texas — A day before the end of pandemic-era rules that allow officials to quickly expel migrants who enter the U.S. illegally, the southwest border is already a scene of chaos and desperation.

  • Makeshift camps, each with hundreds of migrants, have formed on both sides of the border in recent days — some people having already crossed into the U.S., others hoping to do so.
  • At Sacred Heart Church in El Paso, blankets, cardboard, clothing and plastic bags cover the fences and sidewalks surrounding the brick building — signs of the hundreds of migrants who have taken refuge there.
  • One woman teared up as she told Axios she had been camping at the church for a week.
Why it matters: In El Paso and many other cities along the southwest border, it's likely to get worse. An estimated 150,000 people in Mexico are headed toward the U.S. as the migration restrictions known as Title 42 end Thursday.

  • Several U.S. border cities have declared emergencies, federal officials are scrambling to round up undocumented migrants in El Paso to process or expel them under the expiring policy, and Border Patrol stations are filled with recent arrivals.
  • Migrants no longer will be expelled under Title 42 after Thursday — but a new policy by the Biden administration could block many from getting asylum.
  • It's not clear whether many migrants are aware of the new policy — only that the end of Title 42 has inspired thousands to rush to the border.

The CBP App should be used to gain some level of order and put out an executive order that is someone tries to gain entry without a visa or appointment through the app, it warrants an automatic 5-year expulsion. ( But that needed to be done last May)

3 years to fix the limitations of Title 42 and make the southern border more manageable, and they all dropped the freaking ball, too busy pointing fingers at each other than doing their jobs.

side note
I have enjoyed watching people so opposed to Covid sanctions cry about a CDC Covid policy being ended.

The administration will be crying about it in private if this turns into a shit show.

It is already a shit show, by the end of this week there will be a humanitarian crisis at the border. That said , there is not much the admin can do about Title 42 because it was created under the Covid umbrella and if you end Covid, then Title 42 ends.

They should cry about their lack of preparation and planning that has taken place in the last year

Feels a little bit like the Afghanistan pullout. Has to be done, but a lot of work needs to go into the planning.

Or the last 50 years. Neither party really seems to have an answer for the southern border. Maybe they should get together and figure it out. Just a thought.

Start enforcing the law. Start deporting anyone and everyone in this country illegally. Start workplace enforcement raids.

The laws are sufficient. We just have an administration electing not to enforce them.

Your side fought Trump's approach on immigration at every turn.

You people are fools!
Trump had over 900,000 border encounters in 2019...stop pretending they were afraid of him. We had a problem with him separating HUMAN CHILDREN from their parents. Party of life and all.

That and his stupid wall that Mexico was going to pay for - but Biden is the guy who got 1.5 billion from Mexico for border security. Stop projecting.

How are we so unprepared then? As you said, its been a thing forever, how does shit like this go unsolved.
One would think there would be someone in leadership positions who could figure it out. I feel for the people who are actually in border security that are actually IN the fight, having to deal with a hot mess every damn day because people above their paygrade can't figure it out.

Sounds familiar.

Money.

Everything costs money and what do you think people in say Minnesota are gonna pay for, fixing pot holes in their state or paying for more southern border security?

We have the money, the government just doesn't spend it well.
