Tonight: IC West vs Muscatine.....add post-game observations

Have you considered checking out any of the dozen recruiting services that have followed him for four years?
I was just looking for opinions of people on this board that have seen him play. I have seen the rankings and the videos. Just looking for different perspectives.

I honestly have no idea, but I'll just throw in to not listen to people who base their opinion on the 4A championship last year (which everyone could see on TV). That was garbage basketball.
Lol. I saw Acie Earl play at 5 Flags in Dubuque before his freshman year. It was some exhibition game. I thought Dr. Tom was out of his mind bringing him in. He looked like a baby deer running on ice. I would make a terrible scout. Im too enamored by raw athletic ability.

You asked for opinions and I gave mine. I think most of this board knows what we are missing from the guard spots. Defense and dribble penetration. Connor doesn't bring either of those 2 qualities and he's nowhere near the shooter that Jok is. That's my opinion.

Appreciate the response.

We are missing a lot more than that from the guard spots. A stud PG might be keeping us from an elite 8 type squad, it's ridiculous to think Connor won't make a huge difference. You've seen the drop off from last year when we lost a couple average to slightly above average guards.

I remember watching him as a true freshman in one of those intrasquad scrimmages Iowa use to do at the Five Seasons Center in CR. Ya, uncoordinated isn't a strong enough word to describe Acie that night. He had that sweet strut up and down the floor, but my god I though his legs were gonna break in half.

Tonight everyone saw that IC West is a very good team (winning by 39 points) and they were matched up with a very average team with one helluva good player. Wieskamp has to carry his team. If he scorers a gazillion points, they win. The McCaffery boys play within a system. Connor's main job is to set up the offense, pass and make his shots. I've seen him play four times and he is a very good guard-- better than maybe half the guards we've had at Iowa in the past dozen years. I think he'll surprise people by how effective he is at Iowa. You have to remember that Jordan Bohannon MISSES 63.5 percent of the shots he takes. I'll bet anything that Connor can do better. Of course, JOBO shoots lots of threes. Connor is a mature, cerebral player, and very different from Bohannon. I think Jordan starts next year but Connor sees big minutes, too.

First off, Jok is gone so we are running a team out there next year without him regardless. So is Connor better than the options we have for next year?

Let's think about this for a second. Williams is terrible. (Best way to describe a player if you're a fan. Let's listen to what this guy has to say, folks.....) Dailey couldn't beat out Williams. Brady is excellent in his limited role but not much beyond that. Connor will be better than each of those guys next year. (Okay.) Moss has exceptional stretches followed by baffling mistakes. Moss has great upside (and I think he will make a huge leap next year), but it wouldn't surprise if hes Connor is as good as moss next year as well.

Connor can play three positions and make open shots. I'm not saying he's some stud creator or lockdown defender. I'm just saying he's way better than what we have now, and literally every recruiting service agrees with me. A difference maker makes you team appreciably better and Connor will basically eliminate the huge drop off we have when Bohannon leaves the floor. hard to say if he will be better than Bohannon. He's not a guy that looks to score like Jordan, but he's at least his equal as a facilitator. Plus hes six inches taller and it's not like Jordan is some ninja when it comes to lateral quickness. (Bias is a funny thing)

Our fans really piss me off sometimes. (And whose fault is it the other half?....)

SportsCenter syndrome.

I'm just subtracting Pete and adding Conner and I come up with a negative difference. In no realistic way can you possibly come up with a positive difference. 20 ppg, 6 rbs and 2.7 assists is not going to be easy for a FR to replace. So, what is Conner going to bring that's going to make a huge difference when you subtract Pete's numbers?

Conner isn't as good a shooter as Bohannon. I would have argued that Conner is a better passer but it's pretty hard to get better than the 4.5/2.1 assist to turnover ratio per game that Bohannon has.

No I get it. You think Connor needs to replace Jok to be a difference maker despite me laying out the reasoning what that's not correct. I guess that's your right.

You need to take the rest of the night off. Literally no one in this thread, nor in any forum ever, said that Connor was going to be better next year than Jok is now.

Don't think I would throw JB back into the pond. And not only him; all these young guys are fearless. Cordell, JB, Cook, and dragging the whole team with them. And had to edit to include Baer.

When i'm trying to figure out what kind of team we'll have next year, I take graduating SRs into consideration. Sorry. But I'll decide when to take the night off. If the argument is that Conner is the best guard we have coming in next year......OK. He's the ONLY guard coming in next year!
How am I supposed to take these comments?

I didn't know they served beer at high school games now.

I have realized over the years how shitty a valuator of talent I am by watching high school games. I watched Pemsl last year and the year before, and thought he's probably just going to be an average guy at Iowa, probable bench player. I watched McDermott play five or six times back in the day, and thought the same thing. Why don't we let these guys get on campus and see. Also, is Connor even going to cost us a scholly?

Connor knows what he can and can't do and he's a leader. Coaches kids, gotta love them.

Weiskamp is terrific. He's deserving of his high ranking. No doubt he can shoot, but I was impressed with his passing, his teammates just couldn't finish.

And Patrick Mc is going to be the guy at West the next two years. He's only a high school sophomore. Good grief!

All 3 of these kids can play. Go Hawks!

Iowa High School association will not allow live stream of any Sub State Games. Rules on delayed telecast are so restrictive you can't do it. They do not want to lose one dime on gate receipt. Kids are the losers but association has to pay a lot more expenses then girls association. which is true but has to be an answer, end result is everybody loses, the association looks awful.

The drop off has been defensively.

Offensively we're better at those spots.

News flash....players improve year to year.

For those of you who saw the game how efficient did the recruits play? What were turnovers like? Was there an emphasis on making clean, crisp passes or trying to create highlight moments? What did their individual D look like? How did Patrick look on the boards and blocking out? Does he show toughness too?

This is a big laundry list, but inquiring minds want to know.

It's hard to answer all those things definitively, because of the level of play. The guys from West aren't required to make clean, crisp passes all the time because they are just so much better athletically.

But in general, all 3 future recruits can play/contribute at a B1G level. Conor McC has improved. He's good. Won't blow anyone away with his speed, but he's more athletic and knows how to use his 6-6 frame. He's knocking down 40+% of his 3's which makes him very good. Younger brother Patrick has the potential to be a college star. I said it. He's a legitimate 6-7 or 6-8 already, and can pass, dribble and shoot. As a sophomore. Good athlete. Sky is the limit for him. Wieskamp is outstanding, could help Iowa next year. Heck, he could probably help us this year. Legitimate size (6-6, sense a theme?), but is a much better athlete than given credit for. Can get off the ground and is comfortable taking the ball to the basket and drawing contact. I was very impressed with how unselfish he is/was, even with teammates who were inferior to West. He kept giving the ball up to the open man, even if that guy couldn't finish the shot.

The ceilings are highest for Patrick Mc and Wieskamp, but Conor is a very good player in his own right. It will be interesting to see what he decides with baseball and his future after another summer of baseball. All 3 will be contributors from Day 1 on campus.

This post is spot on IMO

Connor is a very heady player. He makes very few mistakes, can knock down the 3 and distributes the ball very well. He plays good solid defense and his BB IQ is off the charts. He will play for Iowa immediately and help out the team from Day 1. He is not likely to be all B1G material but who knows?

Time will only tell. Had a lot of prospects that came in that no one thought would materialize to anything and turned out to be difference makers in the past. Just let it play out and let them do their thing. Connor has been around the college game for a while, so I am sure he will be fine.

I guess I'm not surprised that you don't understand it.

So in your world, none of our young guys now up their scoring averages and it all falls on Conner to make up the loss of Jok? I'm no basketball genius, but I know this is a pretty dumb way rate incoming freshman and their expectations.

That's not what I said.
