Tony Perkins enters the Transfer Portal

Doesn't take much analysis to observe the clear trend of who transfers out and who transfers into Fran's program. He probably wasn't comfortable with Perk's athleticism anyway
Yeah. Iowa was already white AF, and now two black players are out. Now that I think about it, it pretty much has been only black players transferring as of late. Other than CJF, what white player of note has left? I can’t remember.

@curtisj157, we are seriously getting very close to that swim team you like to talk about.

Brock Harding better begin preparing to play a ton of minutes next season.
I gave Fran a B- this year as a rebuilding season
That kind of pass is over now.
Officially Fran is on the clock.
Next year..pass/fail test is making the NCAA tourney, period.

As of right now this roster needs more talent to achieve that, imo.
How does this statement make any sense. Last year Iowa lost 4 players including Ulis who was mediocre and Connor who almost everyone on this board felt was crap at best and shouldn't have played at all.
This year he is losing Tony, who apparently most people feel was a good player, Pat McCaffrey whom nobody liked but outplayed Tony on Sunday, Ben Krikke who scored at the same pace as Tony, Evan Braun, Desante Bowen and possibly Payton Sandfort. Just saying the statement about rebuilding last year and not this year makes almost no sense.

Statement from Fran McCaffery on Tony Perkins entering the transfer portal:

“Tony has been a great Hawkeye the past four years, playing a key role on three NCAA Tournament teams and winning a Big Ten Tournament title. Tony has aspirations of continuing his career professionally; we wish him the best moving forward.”

I wish him well, but I do question his effort in the last few games. Maybe he was hurt, maybe he just didn’t give a damn. I wonder if he will return to Indiana or Purdue.

Dix was our best perimeter defender. Still is.
If Brock pulls a muscle then I am guessing Dix or Payton would run PG? If it is the latter, then we are in trouble.... 😢

Zero African Americans* on basketball scholarship at a power conference school in 2024 is not a good look. Zero African American guards is an even worse look.

* Dembele and Tadjo aren’t American, before anyone tries to correct me.
IMO, it is a problem.

Perception matters. Especially in recruiting.

It does seem Fran has an issue not only landing black players but retaining them. And you can kind of see why. Doesn’t take much for a Joe Touissant or Dasante Bowen to be buried on the bench and end up in the dog house for pretty much the rest of the season.

When is the last time a white player got that level of scrutiny? There have been plenty who should have, especially with the last name McCaffrey.

Everytime I read these NIL prices, I'm in even more disbelief that this is actually happening.

Many of these players will be issuing car insurance in a few years.
Kids who are okay at basketball make more than nurses, cops, teachers, firefighters, etc. We are so backwards in our priorities in this country. I am really starting to despise D1 athletics.

This one stings.
I wish we had resources to retain his services if this is about NIL.
He struggled late in the year but was probably playing with wrist injury.
His shooting was sketchy after the wrist injury which makes sense.

I will again quote new MICH coach Dusty May from his introductory presser today
" at FAU I spent 20 to 25 % of my time on working to enhance our NIL collective, meeting with boosters and business people"

This seems to be the new job description for college coaches.
Can Fran adapt?
No.

Moss started 9 games. He averaged 24 minutes/game.

So if Moss was capable of playing 24 minutes for Kansas, I would think Perkins could possibly find an opportunity on a Blue Blood team. Even CJF was able to join Kentucky. I believe there's a center from Northwestern that's now playing for Duke. While I'm not sure which Blue Blood would want Perkins, there's certainly some history where lessor players have ended up playing for them.

I checked, he started 9 games out of 30. Averaged almost 25 minutes a game and lead the team with 49 3's and averagedalmost 9 pts a game. Sounds like he had a solid year at Kansas
Really. So, then you would say that PMac had a solid year this year. He played in 31 games averaged 23 minutes a game and averaged 8.9 points a game. Oh wait. He's a McCaffrey so it can't be so.

A really good player whose inconsistency and sometimes overzealous defending or whatever kept him from being a 4.5 out of 5.

If he gets on a team with a real good pt guard and he is the starting 2 and can really zero in his shot he could have a big year. If he shoots better from trey range and players run at him he can dribble drive for layups and stuffs. He has to find that type of game
IMO he's not really a 3 pt threat.

I’ve heard from good source ulis got 3x as much as perkins got at Iowa last year. Not surprised at all. Sounds like we had him on the cheap last year and looking to cash in with his free year. Sucks for Iowa but don’t blame him.

This was my point to some. Yet a six figure education isn't enough for a few wins or a single ncaa appearance.

Am the only one that thought he was already done? Everyone here seems to have expected him to be play another year.

He took part in the senior day and during the K-state game the announcers were talking about how sad it was for him to play so shitty in his last game at Carver.

I don’t think he is quite good enough to start for a blue blood. Could be a nice 6th or 7th man, but doubt he is leaving to ride the pine.

I could see him landing at a school like Texas Tech, Louisville., South Carolina, Southern Cal, or DePaul (assuming they ratchet up their NIL)
Indiana a strong candidate from what I’ve heard.

Athletic guards is the issue. It doesn't have to go any further than that.
I want the fast twitch 210 pound 6'4" 2 guard who is paired with a 6'2" 190 1 guard of similar fast twitch quickness and leaping ability. I don't care what their origins are. As long as there are no major behavioral issues, get that type of player wherever they can be found.

What skillset does Tony bring to a Power 5 blue blood or top 25 team?

Defensive intensity as a lock down defender? Nope

3 point specialist? Nope

Drive and dish player? not really

Not really a true pg & not skilled enough shooter for a 2 guard. He's probably a backup & I cannot believe he'd command $300K. He has aspirations to be a pro, maybe he needs to go to a mid major where he can free wheel and ball out. Be the leading scorer in the MAC. IDK, but I don't see him being a star on any Power 5 team. Yeah a 2nd team Big10 player on a middle of the pack team on a weak year for Big10.

Many on here probably think I'm a Hawkeye hater as I criticize many of our players. Much of this is due to some over exuberance from fans on here who are not objective. I try to be the counterbalance & get crucified for calling out flaws in some players games. I won't apologize. No one is perfect, but you can make up for lack of skills with hustle and intensity. I didn't see this from PMac, Tony Perkins, Krikke. I blame coaching for the lack of defensive skills & poor rotations. But the pure lack of focus and hustle speaks to the heart of some of these players.

Freeman, Payton & Dix played hard. Brock played hard, but he's undersized and needs some better focus at times. The three seniors mentioned above should have been better leaders in the regards of playing harder. I didn't see many bodies on the floor after loose balls from these guys this year. Hoping Fran has success in the portal replace the mediocrity we seen this year.

Uhhhhh yea. JBo and Geo Baker at Rutgers were spearheading this NIL movement. If they want to take the credit, make sure they also get the blame for the mess this has created.

Unless JBo became a member of the Supreme Court when I wasn’t looking he had very little impact on what is happening.

If Indiana contacted him that's where I think he'll end up. His hometown is Indianapolis. Lot's of guards I hear bolted from Indiana because their stud center left to go pro. Ware will be a lottery pick.

JBo did have an interview with Jay Bilas during his last year talking about NIL extensively. Give him some credit for speaking out and beating the drum.

He had his best games against IU. He always played them with a chip on chip shoulder. Should've played every game with that level of intensity.
