Transfer women's center

IMHO we will be fine with the bigs. Depending on matchup, Hannah gets the starts and dominates at the 5 with AOG spelling. Maybe reversed if the opponent has a real height advantage. But generally, Hannah's athleticism and quickness will give her the 5.

My biggest worry is replacing McKenna. I just don't see her combination of size and outside shooting on the roster right now and I think her threat at 3's will be sorely missed. She always seems to get hot when Gabbie is cold... and vice versa. McCabe will be the next sniper to replace Gabbie, with crossed fingers regarding perimeter defense capability, but who replaces McKenna? A forward/guard combo with height and range.
Affolter will replace Mckenna. If it was me, I would start O'Grady at the 5 and Stulke at the 4.

Curious…why does women’s team get two more scholarships than the men’s team. Is it Title 9 related?
The men have 13 ships and the women have 15 and playing only a 7 or 8 player rotation is pretty common. I realize some play 9 or 10 but the minutes for them are minimal in my opinion. So, playing 14 with Ava on scholarship doesn't seem to create any problems to m

Possibly. What makes our team so good now is that we have 4 players that hit from almost anywhere on the court and spread the floor which leaves Monica 1 v 1 in the post. Playing 2 bigs shrinks the floor a bit, and w/Clark being such an incredible passer as well as shooter 1 big is the perfect scenario. Stuelke is already a damn good rebounder, and she can beat most bigs up and down the court next year. Not saying there's times we shouldn't be using 2 bigs but our high octane offense works better when the court is wide open w/shooters.
have no problem with Hannah at the five but her optimum position would be the be at the 4. simply go to high low post offense and let her use he size against another 4. with Clarks passing and outside shooting would be devastating. defensive rebounding would improve 100% as well.

I don't think this is the case -- the definitive source for Women's Basketball does not list any 6' 8" player from either Oregon or Oregon State in the latest portal:

TBH, I was reading the Louisville forum after the Hawks beat them on Sunday nite and that's where I got it from.

I, too, have not seen it anywhere else.

Apologies.

I’d like to see McKenna change your mind.🙂

I think this works great until you play other great teams OR if you have a generational pg like clark that can pass and dribble better than any girl I have seen play college basketball.
Once Clark is gone our current scheme will be not nearly as effective. As much as I think Jan J is the best post coach mens or womens, we will struggle against the top ten womens programs in the post without height. Both Cizano and gustofson had issues with taller players.
In my opinion for Iowa to be great (post clark) they need three shooters, a rebounder/utility player, and a jan j coached center.

The problem is she missed the entire season w injury. also Less than 5 pt per game. Not an immediate impact starter.
Arizona season ticket holder here: We are disappointed to see Ware enter the portal. She came in as a five-star recruit in BB as well as a highly touted VB player. She missed her senior year in HS BB due to a knee injury but did play a role on the Wildcat team that lost to Stanford by 1 in the National Championship Game As a freshman. During her Sophomore season she missed some games due to another knee-related injury but came back and played well down the stretch when Arizona lost All-PAC 12 Cate Reese with a shoulder injury. After spending some time with VB last spring, she decided to commit totally to BB. According to coaches and others close to the program, she had a great summer and fall preseason and appeared ready to take a big leap this season. Unfortunately she reinjured her knee in practice right before the start of the season and elected to have surgery. Rehab supposedly went well and she actually practiced with the team without restriction for the last three weeks prior to the NCAA tournament but Adia did not want to burn a year of eligibility just for the tournament run. All season Adia spoke highly of Lauren, how she was progressing and how important she was to the team going forward, especially because of her defensive skills and leadership on the court. We were very surprised to see that she entered the portal. I know she was offered by several power 5 schools coming out of HS, including Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska to list a few. If she chooses to leave Arizona, I would rather see her at Iowa than another PAC 12 school.

I'm not arguing that at all. My point being as long as Clark is here. Yes, as I've said, we're better defensively when Stuelke and Monica are in there together. And obviously we rebound better. However, we are scoring at an unprecedented rate over the last 7-8 games playing mostly 1 big, and that's because Clark has an open floor and we have shooters ready to hit from anywhere and Monica 1 v 1 in the post. If we continue though, to get shooters and really good pt guards, possibly Greenway's daughter down the road, speed and guards can beat slow and big, unless of course it's a team like SC, which at this point there is only 1 of.

It's in the story. Read it.

I read it that's why I asked. What about her, character, personality, stats makes you fell she would fit in with what Coach Bluder wants? I'll trust Lisa, so we'll see if Lisa goes after her.

Don't know the answer but those have been the rules for several years. Maybe it had something to provide more parity. Good question.

What if, the current NPOY offers to free up a scholly and pay their own way due to NIL action? More success next year creates more NIL action. Discuss.

If half a dozen would join in, Iowa could have over a 20 person roster next year, and 8 or 9 actually playing meaningful minutes.

I bet she's all a quiver about that. I'll bet she asks neither one of us about it.

Couldn't the U give Ava a non-athletic full ride that doesn't count against the 15 limit? Does it come down to the hope that she could eventually actually play again? That would be nothing short of miraculous.
The issue there is that at this point Ava still believes she will come back to the floor, in another full year. The tricky part for Lisa is that while she wants to remain supportive of Ava's hard work, once they put her on medical, then I don't believe that she can come back as an active player. EVER. At least not on a ride. Lisa is kind of between a rock and a hard place on this one....

Yes. I believe along with the sports they created like a womens rowing team in Iowa, lol, it is to make up for the imbalance of football rides....

Wouldn't Iowa kind of be a destination spot for HS girls BBallers. We have to be close. 2 different PoYs in the last four years. The last 5 years have been pretty good. A FF, Regional Final and at least one Sweet 16. Some stars other than just the Megalodon and Caitlin. I'm also thinking maybe 3 #2 seeds in the NCAAs. I read somewhere that the entire class in 2022 were top 100 players. That's a pretty good product to sell recruits.

Interesting. Catlin truly special. But Friday NEXT... Women's team tough. Villanova shot 69% to beat Georgetown remember. So good starting point. Lisa and staff plus players will give 100% no doubt. Catlin waay cool. Teammates also.

Kate may be from southern Illinois, but she has relatives all over southeast Iowa. Never a doubt where she was going to play. Attended BB camps at Iowa from way back.
I don’t know why people keep responding to this comment as tho multiple things can’t be true. Everyone knows Kate always wanted to be a hawk and has a family connection.

It’s also true that she didn’t have any eyebrow raising P5 offers and is very much a typical kind of recruit for Bluder. I’m glad she is a Hawkeye. I’m glad she always wanted to be one. The conversation was about recruiting.

The only point I’m getting out of these responses is that…Bluder actually shouldn’t get any credit for identifying Kate’s skills, even if the likes of OSU, MD, etc didn’t? Bluders ability to find and develop talent is second to very few IMO.

Bluder is also highly reluctant to put 2 bigs on the floor at once. Hasn’t rly done it since 2019 when we had Gustafson and Stewart. She speaks of that rotation as being something she had no choice but to get used to. Since then we have wondered if it might happen, but it hasn’t and I’m doubtful it ever will if it didn’t this year (considering how loaded we are at the PF/C). Weird at times considering how good we are at developing centers.

Might have to play 2 bigs at times tomorrow based on SC’s lineup for defensive purposes.

hey, moondog! Thanks for your input on Ware, especially since you are an avid Arizona WBB fan and you know your stuff. I am betting you are originally from north Linn county. Am I correct?

Apparently it is officially called a Medical Retirement. The student remains on scholarship but retires from the sport. If they want to return to the sport a couple years later, the rule says they count against the team scholarship limit for the intervening years. The way out is transferring to another school, which is why a player is forced to transfer to return to the sport. That wrinkle is surely there to prevent using the retirement rule to stash players for a couple years.

Below is a link to a 2017 article about an Oregon State football player that really dives into the whys and hows of the rule.

If I had to guess, the basketball program and Ava will give it a fair shot for her to come back. If it becomes apparent after 2 or 3 years that she won't be able to play at this level, she will medically retire and remain in the program in some capacity.

I think we might but I still think our best bet is to spread the floor and make them come out and guard our shooters and leave the floor spaced for Clark to do her thing. We are not going to out rebound them anyway, and having the 2 of them in together takes out a shooter that can space the floor. Play to your strengths, not to theirs. Again, that's just my opinion. They are the bigger more physical team, so try to outrun and beat them up and down the floor. I fear that is our only chance.

Ya I don’t disagree with this take from an offensive standpoint. I’m afraid they’re gonna get a bunch of bunnies playing big inside though. It’s a tall order that’s for sure. Go Hawks!

Has there been any noise on Goodman possibly not being able to continue productively from a health standpoint? Still wearing the long knee brace, almost never sees the court, and doesn't give a lot of hope of being the next Gustafson / Czinano when she does.
Pre injury I thought Goodman was showing a lot as a back up. Now she looks shaky with that brace. All speculation on a transfer is moot unless someone like Goodman leaves, or takes a medical hardship scholarship.

Ava is not playing again. It would be a wonderful if she did, but let’s be realistic here. She is having 4 surgeries on her knees. Add in she still has some coordination difficulties, watch her videos on dribbling or her shot in the game. At this point you put her on medical hardship if the doctors tell you she won’t be able to play again, that is the advice that has already been given (Bluder statement). What Bluder has stated is they will honor her scholarship, not that they will honor her spot on the team. Similar to Michael Lois. Let’s allow Ava to get the best benefits of being a Hawkeye while also knowing what is realistic.

What Bluder has said is she will not give up on Ava bc Ava won’t give up on herself or Iowa.

She has a scholarship and a roster spot as long as she wants it.

Drop this.
