Update: Noah Shannon CLEARED TO PRACTICE. 26 UI student-athletes investigated for online gambling, incl in FB, Men’s BB, Baseball, T&F & Wrestling

Totally BS. Completly irrelevant to the issue. The NCAA had no choice in this, The rules were in place. Disciplining other issues is arbitrary. And I agree the NCAA is an out of date pathetic excuse for a governing board. But, in this case the rules were in place and they did NOT start the investigation!
Why is this so hard for some of you to
You laughed at my first reply. So tell all of us stupid people how they "picked and choose " to discipline Iowa and no one else.

Again. for someone who doesn't seem to understand. The NCAA DID NOT start this invesitgation. Plus the punishment was clearly stated in their rules. But, you keep up with your poor little IOWA stupidity.

And, again, I agree the punishment is crazy, and I think the NCAA should either go away or be completely revised. BUT , they are NOT the villains in this case!!!!!!!!!
It doesn’t matter whether they started the investigation. I don’t give a shit. You think no other teams besides Iowa and Iowa St in 50 states had kids that bet on football? Yes, the NCAA had leads and so they had decisions to make. Again, and the last time I’ll bring it up, are there not rules that were broken by North Carolina and Kansas? And don’t feed me any BS that they are rules that can be “interpreted.” North Carolina cheated for 20 years. Rules are rules. Shannon is out, fine. North Carolina had fake classes for 20 years, what was their punishment? Did they fit the crime? You want to play goody 2 shoes and give the NCAA the benefit of a doubt fine. If someone breaks the rules then act accordingly is all I’m saying.

I'm surprised nobody is mentioning that Kirk said two additional football players will receive multigame suspensions, one longer than the other. This could also have a big negative impact on the team. We haven't been given the names of these players, but I have been hearing two more defensive starters.
Yes we have, Jack Johnson and Aaron Blom.

I think there are two more that haven't given permission to release their info/suspensions as of yet, rumors are defensive backfield and those won't be appealed.
Other question...recent photos indicate Shannon has a sling on arm, when would he potentially even be available?

I believe this is accurate and would be consistent with reporting by a couple of “sports guys” on DM local radio.

The only names that I’ve heard are those posted previously. Fingers crossed that they are looking at less than a half year suspension.

I have seen nobody other than Trent Condon try to push this idea, and I don't exactly trust his track record.

we'll find out their names when reporters on Sep 2nd take the roster and start checking off names to see who they see and don't see

This is how the 4 Iowa baseball players' names came out (4 players were nowhere to be found for the game)

Maybe we should have suspended two or three players for our three non conference games like Michigan did?
Because a 23 year can legally bet on games but illegal recruiting doesn't mean shit!! If you're a big name coach or conference...

I’ve been really surprised by this as well. I feel like if our starting corner was rumored to have strained a hammy in practice we would have countless posts speculating how many games he might miss. As it is, it seems fairly clear he is going to miss multiple games and hardly anyone even comments on it.
It you read the earlier release it said "players names will be released only when they have given approval. Shannon was a known quantity and is appealing. The others are evidently appealing as well, BUT have not given the okay to have their names released. There is literally NOTHING to be surprised about. Its already been spelled out and it not up to Kirk to make any statement. Think of it as a HIPPA situation. Now obviously this will be a Moot point in another 8 days, as we'll clearly see who is not playing, but for whatever reason they haven't given consent.

Exactly. I don't see why this keeps coming up. Kirk as NO authority to release the players names without their consent.....

To clarify a little, I was commenting on how few posts on this board there have been on the topic of our defensive backfield possibly missing a key piece or two. I obviously understand why KF and the university haven’t released the names.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a single thread on this board about who is going to start at corner for us and how that might impact the season. That seems like an important topic given we lost a return trip the BigTen championship game last year when our starting cornerback got knocked out of the Nebraska game.

Trent Condon is also reporting that a TE is going to be suspended

The NCAA cannot be trusted due to the lack of consistency with punishing less popular name teams like Iowa but lenient to bigger name teams. I'm very much certain there are players outside the state of Iowa that also bet on games but don't get into trouble. There are teams that do bad stuff such us pay high school players to commit but nothing bad happens to them.

The starting CB's are CDJ and Harris. This has been covered on here. And yes "the rumor " is that Harris (and Schulte" are two of those others in this mess. Yes (if true) this is a problem. I guess if it comes out that way then we'll find out if Hall, Lee and Entringer are ready to fill in.....

You mean the same Trent Condon who gets a nice paycheck from circa sports to promote gambling? (Complete aside, but since having moved back to iowa and being able to hear local sports talk...has every talking radio head tried to emulate the adam schefter speaking method of always sounding like you're pushing through the end of a free dive breath?)

Yes we have, Jack Johnson and Aaron Blom.
Kirk himself said on Wednesday morning that there are two yet unnamed players who will receive multigame suspensions , one longer than the other. The rumor going around is that they are Quinn Schulte and Jermari Harris . If this is true , that will obviously have a big impact on our defense. I never said I expected Kirk to name the players , he certainly won't unless the players give their permission. As far as Aaron Blom and Jack Johnson, I think most people agree they will be suspended for the entire season if not longer.

They may have inside info that would give them an edge.
Because all of the athletes at Iowa hang out together in a secret underground clubhouse and share information. Rumor is you have to knock the first 10 notes of the Iowa Fight song to get in. I heard there was a system of hand signals that only the athletes from a particular school know to share with the other athletes who are watching to relay inside information during the game. It's obvious that it is pervasive in the NCAA at big schools. Here is an example.
You Cant See Me Womens Basketball GIF by NCAA March Madness

Is it a taunt? Or is it a hand signal alerting the Defensive end at LSU inside information live during the game?

I'm pretty sure Blom will be permanently banned from NCAA play if in fact he bet on an Iowa football game while he was a player, AND supposedly bet the under. The fact that he didn't play in the game is meaningless, because he wouldn't have known that when he bet. He certainly COULD have been called to make a kick, and that would be as big a conflict as there could be.

The NCAA suspends players for DUI?
It suspends players for being under the influence of several substances, including meth, cocaine, marijuana, etc, but even a players first offense of one being under the influence of one of these substances does not result in a single game suspension, per the NCAA. You have to commit multiple offenses for the NCAA to suspend you for doing illegal drugs.

Yet you can bet $25 on the NBA and the NCAA can suspend you half a season

Trent Condon seems to imply that 2 DB's and 2 TE's are going to be suspended as well.

anybody know who they are ?
Tent Condon is an idiot who has been terribly wrong with speculation the vast majority of the time. Trent Condon has ZERO connections to the Iowa program and has a very bad reputation with donors and people close to the program. he is toxic and and idiot.

This.

Absolutely nobody else has ever implied or even questioned these additional suspensions, not even Rob Howe or Hassel who intentionally tried to misrepresent Cade and Kirk's quotes about his status the other day in order to generate clicks.

If not even two of the three biggest douchebags on the Iowa beat (cough Harty cough), then there's no legs to it.

Are you referring only to the TEs or are you including the DBs?

Both. Nobody but Condon has insinuated either of those.

Leistikow has explicitly stated that there are 2 Iowa football players - beyond those who have been publicly identified (Shannon, Blom, Johnson) - who have yet to be named and referred to at least one as a starter. Go to the 9:00 minute mark of the latest Hawk Central podcast and listen for about 30-45 seconds.

This is straight from Dochterman's article in The Athletic about the current status of Iowa's defensive backfield:

"Iowa will likely lose at least one player in the secondary to a gambling suspension, which has caused the staff to ramp up development, especially with three second-year players."

Leistikow is very cautious with what he reports. That he was willing to state that Iowa will be losing a starter for a couple of games tells me that he's confident in what he's been told.

I haven't interacted with Dochterman but find him to be in the same category.

I'm not expecting Iowa's secondary to be at full strength against Utah State or Iowa State. I'm just hoping that we have the secondary at full strength by the Penn State game.

Totally agree with everything you wrote. I mean, I would love it if the gambling stuff is done and all we had was one starter at our deepest position and some backups that weren’t likely to play anyway. But there is so much credible smoke out there that more is coming. I’m with you, just hope it’s only a couple games so we can be full strength before the Penn St game…

If we lose two guys in the defensive secondary, I would have been more confident about plug and play the next guys, but then we had the TJ Hall experience against Nebraska when CD went out.
