Update: Noah Shannon CLEARED TO PRACTICE. 26 UI student-athletes investigated for online gambling, incl in FB, Men’s BB, Baseball, T&F & Wrestling

Athletes know the rules. Even things as benign as NCAA tournament pools are off-limits.
It is completely stupid that athletes would gamble period. I can't believe for one second that they weren't told the rules.

That said, there is a big difference between the state investigating possible state laws and the NCAA. Last I knew, the NCAA had VERY limited investigative powers. They are not a govt branch and can't employe many of a govt agencies powers. I don't think the NCAA has the authority to confiscate anything.

It is very possible they did or did not break any state laws but did break NCAA rules. If anyone thinks this is limited to Iowa and ISU then you are a fool. That said, it doesn't mean the NCAA will actually investigate more schools. They are a corrupt organisation.

I don't trust the NCAA or any person working for them!!!!!

This in no way excuses the players, who were absolutely stupid!

Pretty sure they are beaten over the head with the rules

And we still have 26 kids who do it anyway

I have friends who coach at an NCAA school. They couldn’t pay a few bucks for a fantasy baseball league because of these rules.

They consider fantasy leagues and ncaa bracket pools with entry fees gambling.

Well, technically they ARE gambling. How serious of course depends a great deal on the money involved. I don’t object to gambling by people so long a) it’s legal and 2) it’s not on their own sport.

And college kids sometimes have to be protected from themselves; j know lots of grown ass adults who get very stupid with money when gambling.

Eh, you're likely gonna see this across the country.

Who knew that massively advertising and even partnering with sports-betting would lead to this. /s
In this instance, you nailed it!

Even away from Iowa, I see many DraftKings and casino commercials when watching college sports contests on television — off the charts hypocrisy.

Clearly every single division one program would have at least a few kids who gamble online. You could literally do this investigation and find someone who has bet online at every school in the country.

Thank goodness Biden’s DOJ is keeping Us all safe from this dangerous crime wave.
And every coach tells players that they look like they are about to rob a bank or whatever...

Your program has been accused of racism and now this...

At some point you have to accept that something is seriously wrong...nepotism is the least of of your problems....and it is a problem

Pot meat kettle much? Does Harbough not have relatives working for him? Does Howard not have sons on the BBall team? And if you really don't think this is going on at M, then your a bigger fool then you appear here anyway.....

Ummmmm.....

Jay Harbaugh is one of our best recruiters and is not our OC or DC. Jett Howard is a potential lottery pick...should his father not have recruited a 5*? Oh wait you mean his brother.. a role player...he should of gone to one of the 30 other programs that offered him...

You are kind of dumb

Trust me when I say this.....Michigan is more racist than Iowa.

Deal with it.

Press release by UI indicates that, on May 2, it received information of potential criminal conduct relating to sports wagering and potential NCAA violations. 26 individuals are implicated.

Same day, ISU issues a statement indicating it is aware that 15 individuals are implicated for activities relating to sports wagering.

Doesn't this beg the question . . . what happened? From where did UI and ISU get this information? Is it only ISU and UI's athletes or are other universities' athletes implicated as well? The who, what, when, where and why this came to light is going to be fascinating.

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission could be a common denominator, especially given Iowa is a small state population-wise.

Didn't Harbaugh lie to the NCAA during an investigation?

LOL… from the guy that spent much of the early 2000s on our board trying to suggest we were taking steroid’s and why we’d gotten so good…

Here’s some rocks for your glass house…

I’ll take gambling for 2000 Alex!

PS doesn’t Jim still have a son coach on the staff?

Sports Wagering Investigation

May 8, 2023

The University of Iowa and the Department of Athletics are aware of the sports wagering investigation and are fully cooperating. We have alerted the NCAA of the potential violations and we have hired outside counsel to assist in the investigative process.

The athletics department provides education on NCAA rules regarding the the prohibition of sports wagering as well as the potential consequences.

Additional Information

  • The university has received information about 111 individuals.
    • This includes 26 current student-athletes from baseball, football, men’s basketball, men’s track and field, and men's wrestling, as well as one full-time employee of the UI Department of Athletics.
    • The vast majority of the individuals are student-staff, former student-athletes, or those with no connection to UI Athletics.
    • The list does not include any current or former coaches.
Timeline

May 2: University of Iowa leadership was notified of potential criminal conduct related to sports wagering that also suggested possible NCAA violations.

May 3: Law enforcement notified the university that additional information would be provided the following day.

May 4: The university received a list of individuals alleged to have participated in sports wagering.

May 5: The University of Iowa took the following action:

  • notified several student-athletes that they would not be participating in upcoming competitions;
  • alerted the NCAA to potential violations; and
  • engaged outside legal counsel to advise the university and potentially lead an investigation.
May 8: The following message was sent to Department of Athletics staff and student-athletes.

Athletics Staff –

Last week the university and athletics department were made aware of potential NCAA violation related to sports wagering. The following statements from the State of Iowa Board of Regents and University of Iowa will be shared publicly shortly. We will follow-up with additional information as available.

Board of Regent Statement

The Board of Regents is aware of concerns related to online gambling involving individuals associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The Board of Regents and the universities will fully cooperate with any investigations related to these concerns. We are closely monitoring the situation and have confidence that University administrators at each institution will take all necessary steps to ensure ongoing compliance.

How does one with "no connection to UI Athletics" be on the list regarding university athletics?

It’s a University release, not specific to athletics. Perhaps some underage non-athlete gambling too?

Based on the timeline, they were notified of potential violations and received a list of names a couple days later. The list I assume included 26 current student athletes.

That is an interesting question. Hopefully not a bookie or another 3 party that amplifies the investigation. This whole NCAA betting thing gets me thinking that it really could happen at any school. Players have high school friends at other institutions and could easily be traced in phone records once the proper authorities get involved. IMO our U of I is cooperating but other institutions may know about some same incidents and have swept it under the table.
This could get bigger?

You’re reading it too narrowly. Entirely possible that names (email addresses?) were delivered to UI Administration who then passed on the names (email addresses?) to the Athletic Department to ascertain if potential NCAA infractions occurred.

Note that in the timeline, on May 2 the university was notified of potential criminal conduct related to sports wagering that also suggested possible NCAA violations.

Aurora made a very good point in the Baseball/Other Sports forum, which was this:

“Criminal conduct” is incredibly broad. For example, Iowa Code 725.19 outlaws wagering by individuals who are younger than 21. It is a simple misdemeanor offense … but nonetheless “criminal.” One of the 4 baseball players who didn’t dress for last weekends game is not 21 years old.

Link to "Multiple Universities across the country" being investigated? I've only seen Iowa and ISU being investigated. Other than Alabama baseball, what other Universities are being investigated for sports gambling?

I would hope all of them are being investigated. You can’t tell me only two D1 teams have had players betting on sports. What’s really crazy as they both come from the same state as well.
