Update: Noah Shannon CLEARED TO PRACTICE. 26 UI student-athletes investigated for online gambling, incl in FB, Men’s BB, Baseball, T&F & Wrestling

lots of money being made off of these kids' games

it is very hypocritical

Three hypotheticals to consider when looking at the NCAA's policy:

John Doe, a football player at ABC University, went to Maple High School with Mark Moe, a basketball player at XYZ University. On a Friday night in October, Doe texts Moe the following: "I'm so bummed. Our big game against UVW University is tomorrow and our stud RB blew his knee out at practice. That's a huge problem." Moe receives that information, share it with his good buddies at XYZ University and they all place bets on UVW to beat ABC in the football game.

Billy Jones, a starting point guard on MNO University's basketball team, loves the NFL and likes to bet on NFL games. Unfortunately, Jones is a better basketball player than gambler. He ends up losing $2,500 on NFL games. Definitely puts a financial strain on him. Jones receives a phone call from someone he's never met before. The person on the phone says . . . "Hey, looks like you've lost some cash. Tell you what. If you can do some digging around and get me private information on various teams at MNO University - you know - insider-stuff - I can make that $2,500 reappear in your account."

Sarah Johnson, a forward on DEF University's field hockey team, is dating Peter Paul, the center on DEF's basketball team. Peter tells Sarah that two starting players were suspended for the next game by the basketball coach for fighting during practice. Sarah immediately places a wager on DEF University to lose its next game.

Betting on sports may seem innocuous and, in most instances, it probably is. But, the history of sports betting is littered with examples of bad behavior and criminal influences.

The easiest rule is the rule in place. You want to be a NCAA student-athlete? No betting on sports during the time of your eligibility.

I would hope all of them are being investigated. You can’t tell me only two D1 teams have had players betting on sports. What’s really crazy as they both come from the same state as well.

You've hit on the million-dollar question that remains unanswered . . . what triggered the process which led to the discovery of these particular individuals?

It's a state investigation, so not crazy at all...

Not being snarky . . . just looking for where you found that information. I've seen nothing reported to that effect and I've been in touch with a couple of persons in the media and they haven't been able to confirm one way or the other.

The rumor was the feds, which means most likely someone got tied up with larger investigation. Then some gambling websites/casino's ran a report for the feds. Or those sites/casino's ran a report and reported it to the feds.

Yeah, I can see why they have the ban. At the same time, it's just frustrating/embarrassing for all of us that 26 current Iowa student-athletes decided to knowingly break the rule. And now we have another embarrassing scandal for the UI Athletics Dept that is making national headlines.

Ughhh.....

Iowa is not the only school that's gonna be experiencing this.

This is gonna be a nation-wide thing.

Also, if you believe the rumors, ISU football is gonna be impacted way more than Iowa.

I think this investigation happens at any school you are going to get hit pretty hard. So do other schools now aware of Iowa do their own investigation and self report, or just shove it under the rug?

Link to "Multiple Universities across the country" being investigated? I've only seen Iowa and ISU being investigated. Other than Alabama baseball, what other Universities are being investigated for sports gambling?
I'm not sure of all but saw a story online about more than 20 universities being looked at. I only know of 3 so far but there seems to be quite a few. I'm really curious how many power 5 conferences are in it or if more big teams are.

Absolutely this is everywhere. There’s nothing to report or shove under the rug right now in other states. I don’t think there will be too many state gaming commissions that are going to want to do anything. All you are going to do is piss off a lot of people in your state. If athletes are point shaving or on the take, that’s a completely different story.

These athletes have a better shot at possibly an easier sentence if all schools do this. They may go with very abbreviated sentences for the lessor infractions.

Wdym "hit hard"?

Rough estimates place 4-5 football players under investigation, and depending on the severity, you'll see some suspensions. That's likely it.

Meaning 15-30 students who have violated gambling rules? To me that is being hit pretty hard. 15-30 across all athletic sports team is rather significant and as a school would be getting hit pretty hard - wouldn't you agree or is this just a fuss about nothing?

26 current athletes, across 5 sports. All for placing bets, none for anything severe as point-shaving. There will be suspensions but yeah, that's pretty milquetoast.

You're not going to see any scholarship reductions or bowl bans if that's what you're thinking. This is about to hit a lot of schools across the country.

Frosty, yes no penalties for the school, but between Iowa and Iowa State between 15-26 students that could receive penalties ranging from 1/2 a season to a full season. That is brutal. Just look at baseball, one of the best players likely done for the season.

Ummmmm.....

Jay Harbaugh is one of our best recruiters and is not our OC or DC. Jett Howard is a potential lottery pick...should his father not have recruited a 5*? Oh wait you mean his brother.. a role player...he should of gone to one of the 30 other programs that offered him...

You are kind of dumb
Okay, I'll play. Are you just incapable of keeping your issues straight? You said Iowa was guilty of nepotism. All I said is your program has EXACTLY the same dynamic, with the HC son working for him, (like 40% of ALL P5 school have by the way), and two sons playing for the bball coach. The issue with Iowa is the results that Brian is getting, and not that he's Kirks son. Before you or some of the rock heads here go there Kirk doesn't fire his assistants. It has little to do with Brian. The only two guys he's ever fired lied to him and cost us a half dozen recruits in the Eno Benjamin mess. He's loyal to a fault, which is also why we keep alot of other really good coaches here like Phil Parker. So should Fran not have signed Patrick who was a top 100 player coming out of high school? CMac was a role player also , and a pretty damn good one who let the nation at 4 1/2 to 1 TO to asst ratio and a solid leader for our team.

No doubt we should have signed Connor and Patrick. But let’s call it like it is. Connor wouldn’t have been allowed to perform like he did for either sport and play as much, if Fran wasn’t his dad. Problem was Connor wasn’t a role player when he was starting with Luka and Joe and averaging his numbers.

That's 41 athletes out of a pool of 400+

That's a drop in the bucket, and that's also assuming every single one of them gets both confirmed as violating the rules, and receives a significant punishment, which is very unlikely

So if Iowa averages 25.1 points a game and wins the West it means having BF as the OC is no longer nepotism? Amiright? Since Jay is not a form of nepotism because he is "one of our best recruiters" but not the OC or DC. If Jay gets promoted to OC or DC will it then be nepotism? Please explain.

Sigh, it’s nepotism regardlesss. Most Michigan fans don’t have a problem with harbaugh cuz they’re winning and recruiting well. The criticism of BF would be a lot softer if the offense was doing better but it still qualifies as nepotism.

Feel like I need to pushback a little on Connors role. Not the least of the reasons his role increased the last couple years (most of his first couple years he came off the bench) had a lot to do with depth issues - this year in particular Fran just didn’t trust the bench like he normally does.

It’s not a coincidence imo that Connor started to see more minutes as Garza took off - with how well he orchestrated things to get the ball to him. I do wonder how things go if he hadn’t had so many injuries that he fought thru - he did initially arrive as a better pro prospect in baseball and split time at first.

You can start a guy like Connor and you can start a guy like Bohannon. Starting them together on the same team was a big reason Iowa never did anything in the tourney. Our backcourt always got taken to the cleaners defensively and athletically, by the likes of Oregon, Richmond, Auburn.

I wouldn't argue with your statement. I just get tired of the "nepotism" crap with both sports, when its literally rampant in college athletics. It goes on at EVERY school where the coach has offspring or siblings involved in the sport....

Yea. You aren’t wrong. We’ve just experienced the very worst of it at iowa the past two years.

The very worst of it? 😂

Yeah, let’s go with that…….

An average of 22 wins per season in basketball over the past five years (with a McCaffery son playing). *which includes one season being cut short.

Someone needs to put a stop to it.
I don’t think the nepotism for Connor and Patrick is that bad. My comment was solely aimed at Mr. 25! I still think Brian being the offensive coordinator in 2023 might be worse than Little Lickliter in totality. If we would have gotten a second year of him in 2010-2011, that probably would change my thinking.
