Michigan football cancels Ohio State game as COVID-19 cases increase

For the first time in more than 100 years, "The Game" will not be played.

Michigan football canceled Saturday's rivalry game with Ohio State because of "an increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases and student-athletes in quarantine over the past week," the program announced Tuesday.

At least 40 players were expected to miss the game because of either a COVID-19 positive test, contact tracing or an unrelated injury, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation told the Free Press on Tuesday. The program received multiple positive COVID-19 test results on Monday, one of the sources said, and the program is expecting the number to rise.

“The number of positive tests has continued to trend in an upward direction over the last seven days,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel in a released statement. “We have not been cleared to participate in practice at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close-contact individuals. This decision is disappointing for our team and coaches but their health and safety is paramount, and it will always come first in our decision-making.”

The Wolverines and Buckeyes have played every year since 1918.

Harbaugh and Manuel are scheduled to address the media at 4 p.m., along with program medical director Dr. Sami Rifat and chief medical officer Darryl Conway

Michigan was forced to shut down all football activities last week due to a COVID-19 outbreak that infected at least a dozen members of the program, sources told the Free Press on Friday. There was pessimism at that time that Saturday's game would be played, as more COVID-19 positive tests were expected, sources said.

The Wolverines canceled last Saturday's game against Maryland because of the outbreak. And although they returned to "limited workouts" on Monday, the virus was too widespread to play against Ohio State on Saturday.

The cancellation comes as Michigan weighs Jim Harbaugh's future with the program. The Wolverines have slumped to a 2-4 record that includes a loss to heavy underdog Michigan State, their first loss to Indiana since 1987 and a loss to winless Penn State.

Michigan is 0-3 at Michigan Stadium this season, and Harbaugh is 0-5 as a coach against Ohio State.

Harbaugh's contract is set to expire after the 2021 season, and negotiations for a new deal are underway, a person with direct knowledge of the talks told the Free Press on Monday night.

According to the source, who spoke to the Free Press on condition of anonymity because the contract negotiations have not been made public, Harbaugh and Manuel are discussing a deal that would reduce Harbaugh's annual salary but give him more financial incentives for winning. The reported deal also would decrease the buyout figure in Harbaugh's contract, making it easier to fire him, but also would give him more money to hire assistant coaches.

Harbaugh has been under fire this season for Michigan's declining play. After marching in Ann Arbor in September in protest of the Big Ten's decision to postpone the start of season, the Wolverines have struggled to find success on the field.

The struggles have made Harbaugh, whose $7.79 million salary is fourth-highest in the nation, an easy target for critics. Just last week, the cancellation of the Maryland game prompted ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit to float the idea that U-M would wave the "white flag" and avoid playing the Buckeyes this season.

Ohio State needs to play a sixth Big Ten game to qualify for next week's Big Ten championship game. And Herbstreit's comments fueled conspiracies that suggested the Wolverines would try to roadblock Ohio State's path.

In a stern rebuke to those accusations, Manuel said Wednesday, "I have to pause because my words, the anger, I was infuriated by the insinuation that Michigan would do anything other than play a football game. We’ve been playing this game since 1879. We’re the winningest program for a reason, because we play whoever’s in front of us. The only way we want to keep anybody from moving on is to beat them on the field."

Michigan chicken out as predicted. They saved an ass stomping embarrassment for Jimmy.

Michigan chicken out as predicted. They saved an ass stomping embarrassment for Jimmy.
And Jimmy doesn't want another loss to tOSU to mess up his contract extension negotiations!

Michigan would have to pay out as much as $10.775 million to clean house and start anew.

The story from the Detroit Free Press:

Jim Harbaugh, A.D. Warde Manuel discussing Michigan football contract extension
David Jesse
Detroit Free Press
Dec 7, 2020

University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and head football coach Jim Harbaugh have had conversations in recent days about a contract extension.

The extension would offer Harbaugh a lower base salary than he currently has and a lower buyout figure, making it easier to fire him next year if needed, according to a source with direct knowledge of the conversations, who confirmed an earlier report of the same details. The source spoke to the Free Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren't cleared to talk to the media about the discussions.

The news was first reported on Twitter by author John U. Bacon, who has written several books on Michigan football.

It is not known the dollar amount of the offer or the number of years. Harbaugh and Manuel are both known to keep contract decisions and talks close and not share with many people.

Harbaugh is slated to face the media Tuesday at noon as the fate of Saturday's game with Ohio State swirls in the balance. Because of COVID-positive tests, U-M had to cancel last Saturday's football game with Maryland. The department hasn't officially said the team will be able to play this coming Saturday.

Harbaugh has been under fire from fans for his team's play this season. The team has a 2-4 record and was upset by Michigan State, beaten by Indiana for the first time 33 years and suffered the most lopsided home defeat since 1935 during an ugly affair against Wisconsin.

However, if Manuel were to fire Harbaugh it could be costly and come at a bad time financially for the department.

Reduced revenues, particularly from the pandemic-related loss of ticket sales inside Michigan Stadium in 2020, led to the layoffs of 21 athletic department employees and salary reductions for others, including Manuel, Harbaugh and basketball coach Juwan Howard. In October, Manuel predicted that Michigan’s deficit would reach $80 million even with the return of football.

The Free Press and USA Today Sports calculated the buyout figure based on the scenario of terminating him the day after the final game of the season on Dec. 20 and retaining his staff through Jan. 10 — the expiration date attached to the contracts of six assistant coaches. Under this scenario, Michigan would have to pay out as much as $10.775 million to clean house and start anew. Harbaugh would be owed around $6.4 million for the remainder of a deal that is set to end three days after the final game of the 2021 season is played. Five of his assistants — offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, defensive coordinator Don Brown, linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, safeties coach Bob Shoop and director of strength and conditioning Ben Herbert — would be due $4.375 million because their pacts with the school don’t dissolve until 2022.

Meanwhile the contracts for offensive line coach Ed Warinner, quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels, tight ends coach Sherrone Moore, running backs coach Jay Harbaugh, defensive line coach Shaun Nua and cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich would be off the books after Jan. 10, the date their deals are set to expire.

On top of the buyouts, if a change was made, more money would have to be spent to bring in a new staff.

The conference screwed the pooch all along. They knew that many teams weren't going to get a full slate of games in when they started the season late. What they should have done all along is say that there won't be a championship game this year. We'll just play the games that we have and do the +1 at the end of the season with teams ranked based upon divisional winning percentage. But the game with the #1 ranked teams is not a conference championship game. It is just an extra regular season game.

Then you wouldn't have teams scrambling to find an opponent to get one more game in against a team that they aren't prepared for. If the Big Ten is about playing it safe with COVID for coaches and players, they shouldn't be considering this last minute scramble for games and instead should just play what was scheduled. It also would have avoided a need to change the rules on the fly during the middle of the season.

In my opinion, the rules were set before the games were played. And the rules were set in a manner that didn't favor any one school over another. If you don't like it, then tough. You're welcome to find another conference.
Yes because not having a championship game hasn't screwed a p5 conf ;)
I guarantee OSU is in the playoff outside of them losing before. Guaranteed. Do people think they will let teams like Cinncy or Coastal Carolina in over an undefeated OSU or a 2 loss Big 12? No way. Not a chance. OSU (without a loss) will be in. Make them play Bama. Otherwise the conference champs mean nothing. Rematches with Alabama-Florida and Clemson-ND. No way cause OSU is one game short are they out. Alvarez will not stand!
I've said that multiple times.....

I wonder if Kevin Warren is on the hot seat at all based on his "leadership" through all of this.

Depends on how much control of this he really has. If all he is doing is being a messenger for the Presidents he deserves a raise. But, if he is in charge he needs to pull out the resume again.

Assuming they don’t bend the rules...this is setting up perfect....we beat Wisky this weekend, AND knock OSU out of the playoff in the crossover game. Maybe 2020 isn’t so bad after all....

I've heard one proposal to move games around. Have OSU play Wisconsin this week and Iowa play Indiana. Nobody official, just some dude on the radio, but it's the only one I've heard that will fit the stupid parameters the Conference has created for itself without just saying "Oh, those rules don't matter now that it's Ohio State".

I hate that idea by the way, for a lot of reasons.

they better move fast & make a decision so the teams can plan accordingly; unfortunately, the B1G is not known for moving fast

Nope. They don't have a plan which is why they are going to be caught with their pants down and their dicks in their hands, again. It's not like we didn't know about this a week ago. I think Alvarez was even trying to get them to move on it. However, if they actually had done that then we would already know what their decision was.

Big ten should just have a four team playoff, Northwestern vs Iowa and OSU vs Indiana winners for conference title. Problem Solved

imagine Ohio State was NEBRASKA
and Indiana was IOWA

and a 5-0 Scott Frost led Nebraska team was on the verge of winning the Big Ten Championship and going to the College Football Playoffs.

and a 6-1 Iowa team was on the verge of getting screwed out of the Big Ten Championship game.

and Barry Alvarez and Keven Warren want to change the rules so they can get the Blue Blood Nebraska Cornhuskers in the College Playoffs... because its gonna make them more money.

you'd be ok with that?

Only that isn't the scenario here. If OSU is blocked from going then a team that they beat head to head would advance.

Pretty big difference.

Nevermind, looks like Indiana will be out of it this weekend as well. So, I guess that means Ohio State can play Purdue. It's a game that was already cancelled and problem solved.

Hawks getting some love on the CFP show on ESPN right now

Might we see #4 tOSU vs Iowa on Dec 19? They discussed that, with tOSU winning, of course. LOL

I'd just as soon watch IU/NW than OSU/NW. Plus, it would likely be the one and only time IU will be there.

Frankly, I’m ok with Ohio St not in the playoffs. The other conferences should be rewarded for playing more games. If OSU wants to be mad at somebody it’s Warren.

I think we end up with Bama, ND, Clemson & tOSU

who da thunk the ACC would end up w/ 2 teams?

If Michigan was the team who needed the game and could potentially go to the championship game, they’d play this weekend. From what I’ve heard, 12-15 have tested positive and the rest are quarantined. I doubt those players are quarantined if Michigan was any good.

this shouldn't be that hard. we are in a 100 year pandemic.

put the best team from the West against the best team from the East

and we know which 2 teams those are

With Purdue and Michigan out this weekend....

Illini vs tOSU
NW vs Ind

pretty easy schedule adjustment for these teams.

Purdue has more of a Covid issue then Indiana does.

There isn't a hierarchy in the Big 10. At least there isn't supposed to be.

You definitely have your head in the sand if you believe that. tOSU has its own set of rules and they change as the need arises.

I don’t cheer for the Hawkeyes very often. This would be one of those times.

I’d love to see ISU play tOSU so we can get one of two outcomes, ISU fans shut up or continue chirping about their possibilities of being in the play off this year.

Honestly, this is the year to have an 8 team play off with the 5 P5 conference champions and three at large teams due to the craziness of Covid:

SEC: Bama or Florida
B12: ISU or OU
B1G: tOSU or NW
ACC: Clemson or ND
PAC10: USC or ?
At large: Cincinnati?, Coastal Carolina?, aTm?, loser of the ND/Clemson game?

Sources: Big Ten expected to change rule requiring football teams to play 6 games to make conference title game

  • Heather Dinich
  • Adam Rittenberg
  • 11:06AM, Dec 9, 2020

The Big Ten is expected to change its policy that teams must play six games to be eligible for the conference championship game, likely paving the way for undefeated No. 4 Ohio State to face Northwestern on Dec. 19, pending further approval in the league, sources told ESPN.

The Big Ten's athletic directors met on Wednesday morning, and while there was support to allow the Buckeyes in the conference championship with only five games, the policy change still has to be voted on by a larger group that includes the athletic directors and the senior women administrators, and it has to ultimately receive approval from the university presidents and chancellors.

Multiple sources told ESPN the meeting was collaborative, and there was a consensus that a sixth game would not change the Big Ten's East Division standings. If Ohio State found another opponent to replace Michigan, the Buckeyes would still win the East, win or lose.

The Buckeyes' place in the postseason became a question on Tuesday after Michigan canceled its regular-season rivalry game because of COVID-19 issues within the Wolverines program. It was the third game Ohio State had canceled this season, after two others against Illinois and Maryland.

One thing is for sure. You guys should be worried about playing against Indiana. I don’t say that as an Indiana fan, I say that as a football fan. Barta has done everything he can possibly do to screw them.

Do you honestly think IU should be representing the B1G East in the B1G title game?

I made the thread a few minutes before you bumped this, now you've posted 3 times in a row, even quoting someone from a different thread to get them to respond in this one.

I'll delete my thread if its really this important to you, but JFC this is weird.
