Do you plan on watching? I know I plan on watching at the Chicago American Outlaws game watch bar for at least 2 of the 3 group games.

I could barely stomach the men's cup, so this one's a big fat NO.

On a related note, I saw some mention of the artificial turf controversy. When I first heard about it, I thought they were talking FieldTurf like what (American) football is played on. Am I understanding correctly that they are really going to use the old school concrete-covered AstroTurf for every game? That should really tell you something about womens sports' standing in the world.

Yes I will watch every match. For some reason as I age I find my sports taste has completely changed. I watch almost no MLB, NFL, or college sports. I watch the hell out of the World Cups and the Olympics and the last two years a lot of NHL. I'm not sure if I'm just sick of the major sports and I know so little of the things I'm watching now that's why it changed or if all the sudden I became a gay. I do get behind the USA like crazy whenever we are in a world competition so maybe that's it.

Didn't realize they still made that stuff, unless they reclaimed the carpet turf from pontoons and houses in the southwest US.

That stuff is so outdated, I can't believe they would use it.

It will be the normal (new) field turf you see in pro football stadiums. The issue is slide tackling and hitting your knees hard can really do damage. I play in a mens 11v11 league on field turf and it really is unforgiving when you hit the ground unprotected. It is nice and soft to play on, as long as you're up right. I still have a torn up knee from 3 weeks ago...this is just rec league as well.

Yeah, not like American football players go sliding on the ground during a game.

I will be watching live, since my family is going. My daughters - no pics - asked for this vacation about 3 years ago, so we will be driving up to Winnipeg this weekend. Looking forward to it. My only reservation is that nobody has any suggestions about things to do in Winnipeg. Usually somebody on HROT has been to basically anywhere in the world and has suggestions...but not Winnipeg.

I would say the opposite. The older I get, the less I care about contrived national competitions where we're suddenly supposed to care about a sport that nobody watches, ever, unless it's time for the contrived media spectacle (World Cup, Olympics), when we're all supposed to get super into it for two weeks, then go right back to not giving a shit for another 4 years.

Yep, going to be in Winnipeg for the first game and Donnelly's in Iowa City for the rest

Not all of it but if the U.S. makes a run to semis or finals then yes

Pretty much this. I just can't get excited for soccer. If it works out, good for us, I'll do my best to catch the really important games.
