I thought it was mentioned that he left wisconsin because he didn't want to play the 4. With Basabe and white gone and a few 3s and 2s added to our team it looks like he will play mostly 4 and maybe 5 at times.
I was wondering how you people think he will be used and if he will be annoyed doing it.

The 3 and 4 can be interchangeable in Fran's motion offense. In fact I think Uthoff will play both the 3 and 4 and be a matchup nightmare. smaller 3's he can shoot over and post up, and bigger 4's he'll take outside and off the dribble.

Uhl could be starting and he could play the four but there is a good amount of freedom in Iowa's offense.

I agree that Uthoff will put in significant time at 3 & 4. However, if as seems likely he starts at the 4, I do think that this implies another guy in the regular rotation who can play the 4 other than Uhl, since Uhl is probably the primary backup at 5 as well.

I agree...Uhl is the primary behind Woody and very well could be Uthoff's also...thus comes off the bench. I see Gesell,Jok,Uthoff & Woody with Clemmons & Uhl coming off the bench...that leaves a starting spot for someone out of the newcomers....who? guess away...

Fran said this summer that Uhl or Sapp would likely be the 5th starter. The newbie wings seem to be making more noise than the forwards now. If Uthoff is at the 4, Clemmons will start until IM or AF earn it.

Progression and transitions. I predict the first lineup of the first game will be Gesell, Clemmons, Jok, Uthoff and Woody. That will likely be the lineup we see at the end of games, protecting a lead, the entire year.

However, at some point in the nonconference I predict that Fleming will earn the starting spot at the two guard.

Uhl will see starter type minutes backing up both Woody and Uthoff.

Williams may redshirt. Moss, Hutton, Ellingson, Baer, Jones and Wagner will battle to earn the minutes left as players 8-13 in the rotation. That means three of those six can still see time on the court in a ten man rotation.

As to how many minutes? Clemmons, Jok and Fleming especially are going to have a fight on their hands.

You're right; he'll likely be announcing his transfer in the next few weeks.

Don't see why Uthoff's position changes. He's still tall, quick for his size but essentially the proverbial small forward McCaffery's use of the forwards very much hearkens to the NBA of the 70s and 80s. It also seems that he works a game plan that fits the players' respective skills rather than make the skills match the system. Sign of a good coach.

Uthoff's going to be a major scorer if he gains some consistency. I'm thinking he's got a real shot at a 20 ppg average.

Agreed. I think he will be consistent because Fran is going to tell him he's option #1. He's good enough to make the right decision 9/10 times and could very well lead the league in scoring.

We are going to be really, really good this season.

I think JU is much more physically ready to play the 4 defensively then he was at Wisconsin. He probably fits better at the 3, but he'll likely fill the same role in the offense this year. 4 at Iowa is also different than 4 at WI

Uthoff should be Iowa's main weapon this year, but a key to allowing him to do his thing will be for Woody to be able to stay on the court for at least 25 min or so each game. We don't want Jared to be put in a position where he has to go in and bang with really big guys around the league on a regular basis. I hope that Uhl is ready to do some of that, because it doesn't look like anyone else is ready to guard the 5 position.

Oops

When Woody's out vs a team with exceptional size down low, we'll play zone a lot. But this isn't unusual and remember that Iowa was a team with exceptional size last year. For a power conference we have a little better than average size still. But our shooting is better to compensate.

Uhl and uthoff both have great length to guard bigger guys. I know it's ptl, but uhl was impressive guarding woodbury and uthoff length can give a lot of defenders trouble. Not to mention, a lot of bigs don't handle double teams well which is something iowa could do also.

In earlier posts I've said that Uhl would defend the 5. He may also spell JU at the 4 depending on the foul situation in any game.

With Jones and maybe Baer also available we might see Wagner redshirt. That could help balance the classes and allow him time to develop. With his athletic skills that could pay good dividends. Of course if he outplays Jones we get him on the court.

No doubt. My guess is he'll also be a lotto pick by the end of the season if not by conference play.

Without looking it up, I think its pretty rare for a 5th year player to be a lottery pick, he will be considered old for this draft class, which isn't necessarily a positive in the eyes of scouts who draft potential and upside as much as anything. If you look at early mock drafts, Uthoff isn't even a first round pick in many of them. I just checked NBADraft.net and Uthoff isn't even in the top 60 in their projections which were updated two weeks ago.

I think Uthoff has better skills and appeal than White and projects better in the NBA, and wouldn't be surprised to see him work himself into the first round, but to think he will be a lottery pick is perhaps overly optimistic. With that being said, I think Uthoff is going to have a fantastic season and has a very good chance to make it 3 years in a row for Iowa having a first team all B1G pick. He is going to cause matchup nightmares for opposing coaches. I just hope Jarrod doesn't settle for too many difficult mid/long range jumpers and tries to be aggressive by attacking the rim. Uthoff can get off that step back fadeaway jumper anytime he wants, so hope he saves that for end of the shot clock situations and first tries to work towards the lane and rim.

Here's a believer for Uthoff! ww.btpowerhouse.com/2015/10/1/9395029/btpowerhouse-25-9-jarrod-uthoff-iowa-hawkeyes-scouting-report-breakdown-awards-stats

Uthoff has plenty of length, but if he is force to bang with physical bigs on a regular basis, he is going to use a lot of energy and increase the likelihood of picking up fouls. Iowa will be a better team if Jared can stay on the court 30-32 min/game and get 15-20 shots/game. I am encouraged that Uhl has added some good weight and should be able to be the primary back up to Woody, in addition to minutes at the 4.

The thing I like about JU at the 4 is that he's going to be able to draw a PF away from the basket and thereby open up driving lanes for himself and others. Uthoff's more unguardable at the 4, driving by almost any 4 or shooting open shots. On D, he's lighter than a classic 4 but he is our best shot blocker which is nice to have closer to the basket. He's also our best per minute returning rebounder which makes him valuable down low in spite of his lack of bulk.

But if JU is at the 4, taking PF's away from the basket, Jok needs to be an opportunistic rebounder.

JU is not a lottery pick.
JU is not "old". He was 18 for less than a week before graduating hs.
JU will not jump from 12 ppg to 20 ppg this year as several have stated.
JU will not take enough shots to average 20. He is a team guy, not a shooter/scorer mentality.
Jarrod, congrats on the engagement. But, don't get all lovey, dovey and soft in the head until after the season!
