Vegas review no one asked for

I've never been. I think people either love it or hate it

My brother and his wife went a few years ago and saw an Adele show and said it was amazing.

CSB.

Is there a lot of history to be seen there (old buildings, museums, etc.). That would be my motivation for visiting such a place. Enjoyed the TV show.
I just remember going to casinos up and down the streets. Ate at a nice hotel/casino while there. No clue on museums or old buildings…..

Yes and no. The town of Deadwood itself is very touristy when it comes to history. More for kids, if that makes sense.
There is an old gold mine near Deadwood you can tour, and the town of Lead (about 3 miles away) has some neat stuff when it comes to history.
Mount Rushmore, reptile gardens, and Custer state park are all within an hour. There’s tons of stuff for families if you do t want to gamble and eat the whole time.

Yeah, Vegas needs a correction. Bigly.

Vegas is a rite of passage for 20 something’s. I have fond memories of my single days and Vegas. Did some wild shit, but at 41 I have no desire to go. That being said we will probably go back as my wife has a good friend that lives there.

My dad used to go at least a couple times a year, and he took me for my 21st birthday. I took my son for his 21st. Rite of passage!

When I went with dad it was 1975 and things were very old school. Stayed at the Sands. In those days you needed to establish a relationship with people there to get comped. We flew for free, a guy met us at the front desk and escorted us to our rooms. Dad knew how to work the system. The entertainment our first night was Charlie Callas (Google him, he was one of my favorites) and Doc Severinson.

When I took my son it was a whole different world. I kept it as old school as I could by staying downtown on Freemont, which is pretty fun for people watching. He does t gamble much be we enjoyed the shows.

My dad took me there for a high school “graduation” gift in 1967. I was too young to gamble but I played golf at the Desert Inn, the Dunes and The StarDust golf courses…I had a great time and pops attended a pharmacy convention and played KENO ( almost non-stop!)…
We saw Phil Harris, Don Adams (Get Smart) and Joey Bishop at dinner shows (watching the staff take/serve drink orders, serve and clear dinner and reserve drinks for 250-300 people in 45 minutes was fascinating… and then watch a dinner show run exactly 1 1/2 hours so the customers could get into the casinos to gamble and staff could clean up for the “late evening ” show was interesting, too… those waiters hustled their butts off!

Old Vegas was an interesting place

I despise Vegas. It's Africa hot and I hate casinos. There is nothing around the strip but desert. I can get decent food and a nice hotel many other places.
I've only been there once, but after 3 days I was more than ready to get back home. I started having less and less fun the longer I was there, it's just not really my thing. I'd go again if friends asked me to go, but I don't think I'd ever plan a trip there with the no pics wife.

The day we left it got up to 116 degrees, and it was windy. The wind almost made it worse. It was just ****ing hot air blowing at you nonstop. As a guy that sweats easily, I absolutely hated it/csb

I go 2 times a year.

I play in the smaller poker events around the WSOP and then 1x for business.

I still like it but it has changed in the last 5-10 years and not for the better.
WSOP events or other events at NON-WSOP hotels?

Haven’t qualified for WSOP yet.

We have a group of about 30 that play ten times per year. Points awarded per finish. Keep best 8. The group then finances the trip to WSOP main events for the top 2 finishers. We all kick in for the entry.

Our guys keep 70% if they win any money and kick 30% to the group. Most of them play the main event, but a couple guys are heavy PLO players so they will pick that, as long as it’s a 10k entry. I hate that game with a passion.

I will play the non-WSOP - sometimes the Wynn events during the month or some of the Caesar’s sit and gos/one day tourney.

You?

Never played WSOP. 10 years ago I tried to get the RIP in pieces Mom and MIL to stake me for the 50+ NLHE at the WSOP for 50% ROI provided I won something. They didn't go for it. I've played 3 S&G's at Binions (cashed all 3) but mostly played 2/5 NLHE cash games when I was out there. Usually did okay.

Those were in my poker playing days.

That’s about all I play when I’m out there. Pokers tables have some unique people at them. Great people watching.

Maybe play a little 3 card poker for shits and grins.

I think your “3 day” observation is quite valid. Been a rule of thumb for my bride and I. It’s fun to visit fir a while…

GF and I get out there annually. We'll probably stay at Circa moving forward (Off Strip/Fremont). I'll agree it's expensive, but if you know that going in it's palatable. Plus you can duck into places that have great deals. You're just not going to find them in the big casinos very often. Carlos and Charleys at The Flamingo has a great 2 for 1 happy hour.

Never been and i missed u2 in the sphere, which is about the only reason id go, short of being retired flush with $$$ and free time.

Whoever thought of resort fees should diaf. They are just a way of hiding the actual price of the room so that people can make an informed decision. I’ve yet to see one that actually provides anything of value for that fee.

Daily Resort Charge includes: Internet access; bicycles; beach chairs & umbrellas; paddle boards & kayaks; fishing rods with bait; two water vessels, refillable throughout stay; recreational amenities & equipment; family activities; pool & beach activities/delights; daily sunset toast/ceremony.

The strip is in a desert also….to get to unpopulated desert from the Venetian it is going to take you around 30 minutes any direction you go.

It really is no different for Vegas people than it is Iowa people when it comes to climate. In Iowa it’s a thing to go out in the cold and ride snow mobiles. Vegas it’s a thing to go out into the desert and mountains in ATVs.

110 in the desert and we are chilling outside relaxing and working the grill.

Wife and I go at least once a year. Rooms are always comped at mgm hotels and almost always stay at the Aria. We spend 3 or 4 days eating good food (we have a bunch of restaurants we love, nothing outrageous) and playing a lot of pai gow poker together. I honestly can’t think of many things we could do where we are sitting right next to each other talking the entire time and having fun for hours. Our gambling ends up paying for the rooms and comped food so I completely get that we aren’t actually getting them for free. But sometimes we come back ahead and it’s like we’ve been paid to go hangout for a few days.

Last time we stayed an extra day and got a car through turo and went to valley of fire state park about an hour away. That was pretty cool. Sometimes we’ll chill by the pool if it’s not too hot or cold. We’ve used the day spa a few times. But our typical day is get up early and exercise. Then we are often playing pai gow by 7 am when things are quiet. Neither of us are into big crowds so you’d think we wouldn’t like Vegas but we know how to mostly avoid those cards and have doing it. That being said I would hate coming to Vegas and doing clubs or other touristy things. I love going with my wife but would hate it with anyone else.

In June of 1944 my dad returned from his European tour as a B-24 pilot. He was the first European overseas pilot to be stationed at Nellis AFB following his assignment. He told me that for two weeks he couldn’t buy a drink or a meal… then the other bastards came back and ruined it for him.
Vegas was about 8k folks in the middle of no where back in 1944.

My (no-pic) daughter went for her 21st with her best friend and her Mom and Dad. She got “picked” to come up on stage and be David Copperfield’s “assistant” at his show. Her being a very attractive blonde with a (too low cut by my standards) cute black dress that showed all her cleavage I’m sure had nothing to do with it 🤨 - but it fit right in the Vegas scene.
She and her friend got comped for everything after the show. Great 21st birthday.

I have not been to Vegas since around 1998. Even back then I was not a fan of The Strip but loved Fremont Street. If I were to ever go back, I would avoid The Strip and stay downtown, but from everything I am reading in this thread I don't have much desire to ever go back.

Deadwood, SD is awesome. There is so much to do in the Black Hills. If you are active, in the winter there is skiing at Terry Peak, or you can rent a snowmobile for the miles and miles of trails in the Hills. In the summer there are miles and miles of trails to hike and caves to explore. Gambling in Deadwood is fun. All sorts of places to see, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Spearfish Canyon.

We used to go to Deadwood every winter to ski, hit the casinos, and party at Saloon No. 10. This past summer we spent a week at a cabin in the southern part of the Hills near Hill City and never even made it to the northern Hills areas of Deadwood-Lead-Sturgis-Spearfish.

If you haven't been you should plan a trip. Great time with a wide variety of things to do.

Same here,.. wife loves it though.
Very curious, what does she like about it? I will say my wife (no pic) is a major foodie, she loved the food. That said, we were there one night stopping over on our way to SoCal.

Shows mostly, but food as well...

I had to drive through this white stuff falling from the sky today while on my way to work.

I want my Africa Hot back.

Maybe drop the resort fee and bring back cheap breakfast?

Yep, we're spending one night there after Zion and the basic room in the nicer hotels are near $400 / night ON A WEDNESDAY! So, we ended up booking a renovated room at the Flamingo with a strip view for $47 with resort fee over $100. Normally we'd get an upgraded room at a nicer property but it wasn't worth it this time.

Last time I was in Vegas a resort fee at the flamingo was $28. $100 is wild. I'll never go back.

We were at Caesars last fall for a conference so went poolside to say hello to the no pic wife on a break and check out the talent in the adults only area. Sat down and talked for a bit so ordered a double vodka club soda. It was $65.00. LoL. I know, CSB.
