Kansas City beat Houston yesterday, 23-14.

However, the Texans' defense was flagged for two controversial penalties at separate points when it contacted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Both penalties extended Kansas City drives, leading to a crucial 10 points for the Chiefs.

3 POINTS: Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr was flagged for roughing the passer on a Mahomes incomplete pass to tight end Travis Kelce on third down during the Chiefs' second drive. Anderson appeared to hit Mahomes in the upper neck area shortly after he released the pass. That drive ended in a field goal to put the Chiefs up 6-3.

7 POINTS:
In the third quarter, Mahomes scrambled on a first down and slid while Texans defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi and linebacker Henry To'oTo'o collided with him, drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty. The Chiefs took advantage of the extra yards and capped the possession with a touchdown to put them up 20-12.

I think he gets some preferential treatment. By rule, all QBs do, but there's no doubt that some hits on him get flagged that would not if it were a lesser known qb (say, Anthony Richardson or someone like that).
It also gets magnified because his game is built around his mobility, and he has become very skilled at sliding at the last possible moment, like he did on the 2nd call yesterday. The defenders had already begun the motion to tackle a runner, just as they would if it had been a RB or WR. You can't let an elusive guy like him stay up that close to contact, then flag it when he gets hit.

Yep. And it is intentional too. He is an artist at selling it. Like he tried on his embarrassing flop out of bounds where he stopped on purpose and then when defender gently bumps him went dramatically flopping to the ground with theatrics even soccer players would think was over the top. Cringe.

I saw one laughable call that favored him yesterday that didn't end up changing the outcome of the game regardless

That call was really really bad, though.

Does anyone know how the refs iced the TX kicker so he missed a FG, XP and kicked into a block and another FGA? Thinking he screwed up on the FG he made, because it sure looked he was going to miss that too! Damned Chiefs loving refs giving them a free ride to another Super Bowl.........

It’s more than just the calls, it is the intentional slowing down for contact and flopping. Majorly cringe.

Christ, who could hear the helmet to helmet contact right in your video! 🤡 Big Troy also insisted the TX completion on the sideline that was reviewed and remained a catch was an incompletion, no?? Why did the refs just give that to Stroud??

I’m not a Chiefs fan but have any of you watched sports before? There were the Jordan rules in basketball and if you looked at Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers you could possibly be flagged. Just wondering if you people were upset when that was happening. Again I’m not a Chiefs fan and I believe we shouldn’t have special rules for any player who steps on the field of play but this has been happening for a long time.

As a Chiefs fan, I get the frustration with both roughing calls yesterday. I don't think either *should* be penalties, but with the way the NFL is played nowadays both plays are almost always called regardless of the QB. Both plays had helmet to helmet contact on the QB.

The whole late slide issue has been a conversation throughout the league all season, and I'm guessing the competition committee will tweak that rule in the off-season. I think in general more well known players likely get the benefit of a few more calls in comparison to a rookie or lesser known player, but don't see it as specific to Mahomes or the Chiefs. The Chiefs just happen to be under the biggest spotlight right now, and there's a lot of reasons for people to hate them (Mahomes/Kelce are annoying, they keep winning ugly, Taylor Swift, etc).

He keeps sliding late like this to draw penalties while still taking hits, he’ll end up with CTE sooner than later.

The whole point of the slide is to avoid getting the hits in order to extend your playing career(and life), not to draw penalties. Mahomes needs to learn that.

I would say it is not so much a Mahomes thing if someone thinks there is a conspiracy but maybe that urge for someone to have the chiefs themselves win for ratings. Do you want to see houston vs the Bills/Ravens winner. Ok by me but maybe not the TV and the NFL if you believe is this kind of conspiracy theory. The first roughing the QB did look like that from the point of view of the ref who was directly behind the action. There was hit up high but not the head and neck, but was it late, maybe.

I dont believe there is any conspiracy. The refs missed a fair number of calls in the two games yesterday. Some got quickly corrected, some others not because the rules dont let replay do a quick correction.

Special treatment? All these guys do is overcome adversity, and now it looks like with these accusations they will have to overcome more.
All those injuries and rehabs........damned refs and their secret healing potion, they should be forced to share it with the league!!!

great points

As soon as the qb crosses the LOS slide protections should go away.
No way, did you see the hit by the nfl player earlier this year that totally wasted the qb. that was a late dirty hit and the player was suspended. Any player that slides, even one late in the game giving themselves up to save time and call a timeout , need to be called for protection.

It's also funny how the flop received so much hate from fans towards Mahomes when the entire league flops now to get calls. Josh Allen is the king of flopping. I dont remember any outrage there. I hate it too, but it's like people only watch Chiefs games and no one else.

The difference is those guys were established clear GOATs before that treatment whereas Mahomes was not even close to their level when this BS started happening. It’s been about four years now and gets worse in the playoffs. It is really weird.

The rule protecting the QB didn't happen until Rodgers lost a full season after taking a hit at Minnesota on opening day.
