Have any of you ever seen the Wrestle backs at a Tournament get cancelled??? In 45+ years I have never experience anything like this POS Tournament!!! A school that has not hosted a tournament that I am aware of, for some reason, not only hosts one, but invites more teams then any other year of this Memorial Tournament. They only have 3 mats and it is very clear to me that they will never be able to finish. I speak with the head coach who is hosting it and he tells me, " we are on schedule" ???

It was very clear that they had no idea what they were up against. Several brackets that were full, would not even be able to finish if there was time because of the Maximum allowed matches for a day in our state.

My kid Wrestled a bad 1st match and got knocked to the back side. He would have to wrestle 6 more matches to come back for 3rd. Won his 1st and then they announced that all the remaining wrestle backs are cancelled!!! Well as I am sitting there next to the garbage over flowing out of the trash can because no one is working and with no food except some snacks I packed because they ran out.

It occurs to me, not only did he and everyone else in his shoes get screwed, but it can also adversely affect seeding to because of loss of matches and possible quality points they use to seed end of the year tournaments! This aggravates me even more and I bring it up to the coaches, asking what is going to be done about this??? They do not seem to understand, and just want to blow it off. Not the answer I want to hear.

Now I ALREADY have spoken to my son about NOT LOSING!!! I get all that stuff, but apparently according to our coaches, it was the host schools coaches who made the decision? My question to you all is 1) Have you ever seen this? 2) what if anything do you believe should be done? 3) would you call the host schools AD? etc....

Thanks in advance

Hopefully they learn a few lessons.

However, a loss is a loss. Hopefully your kid talked you off the ledge…..

But seriously… contacting the host school’s AD may be the best route. (The coach doesn’t sound smart enough to learn a lesson, maybe.)

Probably not much you can do about it this year. If they don't have the mats or time, its over. Sounds like whoever made arrangements didn't know what they were doing. You should have some place to lodge a complaint, the high school association probably.

If this is high school, then I am assuming it has to be sanctioned by the state. If that's the case, I would send them an email detailing what happened. As for the loss concerning seeding, wouldn't even worry about it. I think fans and parents worry more about seeding than wrestlers do. They just want to be the best.

I appreciate the replies!!! I think you all made some good points and that is what I am looking for. el dub, it was more me wanting to throw someone off the ledge, LOL!!!

sdvike, 100% , it was very clear we were in for a long day as I looked at the amount of wrestlers and then 3 mats. In the "old days" when I was in HS and early years of coaching even. We sometimes would leave at like 5am, and would not get home till the next morning!!!

I was prepared to stay as long as necessary, but I think it had to do with factors such as the Refs, Table help, scores etc.... It would seem to me like a much smarter solution could have been worked out early in the day if someone had a clue!!!

CoachPhil, I get you, and you are correct. For me it was more about my son getting back mentally after a bad 1st match. Felt he was back on track in 2nd match and hungry to do what he could and then BAM!!! My son was wrestling 190 while weighing in at 172. He had to do this because of the damn certifications and decent plan! I say this because I think mentally he was not ready in that first match.

NO excuses!!! Was time to put it behind him and get going!!!! He might not have lost as much as other kids, some who only got one match on the day I am hearing now! Just very frustrating and like I said, something I have never seen!

I almost added ground cumin instead of cinnamon sugar to my french toast the other day. Everybody has problems and don't feel like you're alone.
just add some cayenne pepper with that cumin and call it creole toast.

Bird- sounds like the coaches bit off more then they can chew, hopefully they learn from it and so does your son. Binging of the season, get to the correct weight and let it fly he will be fine.

This.

Beyond that, I would wait a week and have a calm and rational talk with your son’s coach and AD about not scheduling that tournament again until they can prove that they can actually host a complete tournament. Leave your caps lock key at home.

I hope that they also stopped keeping team scores. If you’re not going to hold all of the matches, you shouldn’t be keeping g team scores.

No, they kept team scores and also had some kids get 4 matches wrestling for 3rd and 4th basically by default!!! I am talking about my son, but as I said, most wrestlers in the tournament got screwed!!!

I am hoping WRESTLING PEOPLE understand what happened here!?!?!? Obviously this being an early season event, I guess they feel it is OK and they can get away with it??? Just picture a more meaningful tournament!!!!

You are at a qualifying , state , HELL even the national tournament. Well IRON you lost and you were set to go to the backside and try for third but we canceled that so........

It was very obvious to see a problem and they did not address it. They could have made the preliminary round single elimination for example. Then make all wrestle backs 2-1-1 or something.

It does suck and is a rip off, but still a very minor hiccup in the grand scheme of things. They obviously should avoid that place in the future. Take a step back, a deep breath, and just enjoy the season. Know that your son will have off days and that's fine. It can be a roller coaster, and you will play a big part on how high the highs and low the lows get, so keep that in perspective. Just enjoy the fact your son is wrestling, and make the season fun for him. Be proud of him on his good and bad days and make sure he knows it. The time flies so relax and enjoy it as much as possible. I would love to still be going through the "problems" of high school sports. Trust me it can suck when that chapter ends.

Thanks will do, gonna have a burger and unwind
After you unwound, did you get any satisfactory answers, knowing acceptance doesn’t mean approval?
I hope your son is having a good season and is wrestling at his optimal weight. Hopefully he learned the valuable lesson of being mentally prepared for every match.
I didn’t learn the intricacies of this until my competing days were over. It’s haunting.

Best of luck and enjoy the way along the way.

Or, just don't be that dad and let it go. Your son lost, too bad. He went 0-1 that weekend. Rebound and enjoy the season and win when it matters. Next. Live for tomorrow.

TY, He is wrestling pretty well and is currently ranked 5th. The thing now is to get him to wrestle to his full potential! If that was easy to do, or if someone came up with a formula to do that, well that would be great and WE would be rich!!!
Did you try - I AM IRONBIRD! ;) As mentioned - enjoy the journey and don't get too caught up in the wins and losses.
Hmmm, I did not think of that? But while I am kinda famous here and on several other boards, my fame in my area has faded!!! I am trying to enjoy it as much as I can without exploding!!! TY

He did lose, he also came back and WON next match and was set to run the gauntlet on the backside. That was before the dumb asses just cancelled most of the wrestle backs!!! It was and is something like no one that I have spoken to has ever seen or even heard of. Honestly, it was just a disgrace and I really hope as wrestling people everyone understands!?!?!?

The tournament was set up tp run a certain way, and once the shmucks figured out how badly THEY F-ed up. Their solution was to screw the WRESTLERS and that is why I have a problem with it.

Yes rebound and keep moving forward has always been the plan!!!! TY
