Decision to pull Estrada’s redshirt

I’ve made that point more than once.

But we’re Iowa. Our starter should look like a guy who’s going to be on the podium. This doesn’t look like a logjam to me. It looks like a hole.
Yes, looks like an (a-hole) to me.

I don’t think if you polled people they wouldnt think it was a head scratcher. I agree outwardly looking in. You created this thread and are taking the stance they aren’t doing right by Estrada and taking away his future opportunity. Basically screwing him over for one dual. We are disagreeing with you regarding this.

great point. i should have been clear that i know there is zero chance that estrada wasn’t all in with the decision. it’s not that i think they are screwing him over, but i just think it’s up to the coaches to know better than to even consider it an option.

i have coached (not at a high level) and sometimes it’s necessary to protect athletes from letting their competitive nature push them to make poor decisions. most guys always want to compete. maybe it’s still an area we disagree but at least this is progress. 😂

It was in the context of whether Estrada coming out of redshirt is a big deal or not. I acknowledged that I liked Estrada's potential but that we have other guys around the same skill level. Estrada could shirt next year if he wanted to....especially if we brought in two NIL guys. I think competition for spots is a good thing and who knows what they will look like by next year...especially the true freshmen.
Correct - the redshirt is still available, just not this year. Anyone stop to consider this as well - he may not want to stay in school for 5 years and that has been well communicated to the coaches?

The issue I have with your view is this only works if the plan is for Estrada to be in the lineup for 4 years and b a productive option meaning high AA. I don’t mean this to disparage any athletes because I think he looks promising and wrestled hard. But doesn’t look like an AA next year and in today’s climate that means they will be looking for one to fill that spot at 149-157 next year most likely. Either way a possible year lost. Or maybe he feels he needs to be in the lineup this year to show his potential and possibly keep them from bringing in an NIL transfer.

Redshirts can be taken after year 1 so he still technically has a RS ( it won't matter down the road once the 5/4 rule gets implemented). Getting to travel with the team and compete in a few duals helps an athlete understand the process and what they need to work on ( why the 5 date rule is huge) . So now during that RS year they know what to work on and understand everything that goes into it. Coming in and RS immediately sometimes is a lost year you don't travel with the team or feel what it's like in a hostile environment. You hit a few opens with maybe a coach or 2 and thats it. Some kids will take any opportunity they can get to wrestle in the line up regardless.

I'm not understanding why people are throwing shade at Brands on this. Little different if a wrestler, football or basketball player isn't going to see the lineup. Redshirting then seems to make the most sense. Miguel has wrestled well enough to get some shots in the lineup, so if he wants to forego redshirting, then I say go for it. Yes, I would think Tom and Terry were hoping he would redshirt, but at the end of the day, I believe this is what Miguel wanted to do. Yes, as fans, we all would like to see him not burn the redshirt, but we don't matter. Not that I know anything, but if a coach forces a redshirt, then maybe that kid quits the team and transfers.

I'm happy for Miguel. Think he made the best decision for him, and I look forward to seeing how his career pans out as a Hawk

Beware talking common sense in these parts Young man !!! we thrive on rumors and make a living off of anonymous sources and the truth when its told to us by a reliable insider...ORRRRR the next door neighbors garage door repairman who always has the inside scoop with Iowa wrestling and sourdough bread starter recipes but he is only accurate 83% of the time when it concerns sourdough bread.

i think it’s a little shortsighted to act as if a guy’s true freshman year defines his entire career. either way, maybe i am overestimating estrada’s potential but to me he seems like a guy who has shown a higher ceiling than people maybe thought during his recruitment.

No one is defining his career. He has time to keep developing. But going into next year, he has neither the pedigree or the results of someone who’s going to finish high on the podium next season. And to make it worse, there are two open weights around his.Hence the problem.
