Was Ayala at the meet tonight?

It appears he would have matched up well with PSU 125-pounder. Any info on his status?

Would Ayala qualify for medRS? Otherwise he will probably wrestle at big tens
Wondering that as well. If cullan is able to cut down he’s already burned his shirt. If Ayala won’t be 100% might as well medrs if possible.

You really think that? That is not a thing anymore. See PSU's leverage of it in the past.
Maybe he can apply for a medical hardship in a few years, those are the ones that are seemingly becoming easier to get. But based on how far the team is into the season, I think it's too late for him to get a medical redshirt this year

Less than 30% participation and season ending injury must occur in the first half of the season. Not saying it can’t or won’t happen…just sharing what I recall to be the eligibility requirements for a medical hardship waiver.

Lewallen got the waiver for the 18/19 season after wrestling in the second half of the year but he was also injured in the first half of the year.

He wrestled less than a handful of varsity matches. If it is season ending he will get a medical. That is the way these things are trending.
I hope you're right, but the rules for medical redshirt are a little more cut and dry than they are for a medical hardship

Does not matter. Rule is black and white. Wrestle in the second half of the season, you are not eligible. Additionally, he has wrestled 16 D1 matches. Attached or not makes no difference.

I don’t think such a hard line is appropriate here. He came out of redshirt for 5 matches and sustained a season ending injury. They will be applying for an exemption and that will be their case—it’s a material point. They’ve been handing out extra seasons like candy in recent years. It will in no way be a surprise if it is granted.

Technically, that is not true. It seems that way because prior to the rule change in 2018, it was nearly impossible to get an exception to the five-year rule. The problem was the rule negatively impacted kids who had already redshirted and was favorable for those kids that did not. Wrestling is a sport where nearly everyone red shirts thus you did not see it often. It was far more common in other sports like football. The change simply puts everybody on an even playing field. One thing that has been incredibly consistent since the change is the NCAA is not budging from the criteria.

I don't think this is right. He could wrestle 60 D1 matches this year and if he wasn't attached he is still in redshirt. They can't count any matches he wrestled except the ones he wrestled attached.

Is this true? I thought as soon as the redshirt is pulled, all the matches wrestled unattached that year count. Look at Spencer Lee and his Midlands loss his freshman year.

Ayala and Lugo were in the tunnel all night getting the next guy ready.
And while it may not mean much, the couple times I saw him on tv he was not wearing any obvious brace or acting as though there was any serious injury, at least not to a larger joint like a shoulder, hip, or knee. Not saying there isn't a serious concern, but I came away from that feeling optimistic it may be relatively minor. Fingers crossed.

I was told to not rule him out for the post season.

For sure. I won’t get my hopes up for it, but there’s a chance.
I don’t think he should. I want Drake healthy in March for 4 years not 65% for one. If he goes in March the medical hardship waiver is off the table. Just my opinion.

What would you say if he can go in March and gets enough points for the Hawks to bring home the title? What if hes a difference maker for the team?
I would say I love that idea. But, I would also say that he’s a true freshman dealing with a significant injury. Why risk him getting hurt more when his upside is so damn high. I believe that Iowa will be in the mix for the team race next year as well, especially with Spencer coming back.

I don’t think anyone can say for certain that he’ll be able to contribute the same when he comes back. Cory Clark was a senior, Kemdawg is a senior that’s why they’re out there. It’s their last hurrah. Drake is gonna have a ton of success, and I want to give him the best chance to do that. That to me means starting next season healthy.

PSU has a black hole at 157, and I don’t think they’ll get much from 165. I could see Iowa getting 8 AA’s and 2-3 finalist, throw in a dash of luck and we’re right there this year without getting anything from 125. That’s a lot of hope riding on Murin, Young, Assad, but I think they all could have a solid NCAA’s.

It is dicey if he would score significant points even at 100%. Would be in a crap shoot with a number of other guys for 6-8 type placing and would probably not get much bonus. He has some great potential but also a number of things need some work. Take down defense is kinda shaky, bottom needs work, top needs work, a bit deficient in size and strength. Much like true freshman Desanto was.

What's a better scenario? Go this year at 65% (speculation on your part I assume?), redshirt next year with Spencer back, and then have 3 years left. OR, have Ybarra go at 125 this year and HOPE that Ayala gets this year back. Then have him go next year coming off an injury UP a weight because Spencer is back at 125. Then have 2 or 3 (if he gets this year back) more years at whatever weight he settles in at.

If Ayala is only at 65% (I know, speculation), he probably only scores a point or 2 at NCAA's. Which of course is a point or 2 more than Ybarra would.
