It was after our brief string of success from 2002-2004. That's where any sense of entitlement stemmed from. The thing that's striking about it is that Hawkeye fans don't really have an excuse for feeling entitled. I don't mean that as a cheap shot. It's understandable at Nebraska (until recently), Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, but Iowa hasn't had the kind of consistent greatness that should produce the kind of fan attitude you're talking about.
The difference is Iowa is always trying to compete with several top tier programs historically within their conference, and when we drop off after having some success, a certain portion of our fanbase is not okay with the setbacks to upsetting the supposed "natural order" of things......
Iowa State, however, is not trying to keep up with anyone at the top. They're merely hoping to field a squad capable of hanging with teams, maintaining that, and possibly pulling the occasional upset that they can commemorate and celebrate for the next 30+ years, particularly with Iowa (and that is a true fact backed up by evidence from the football program's own players and coaches over the years).
