WBB Former #1 Ranked Recruit Lauren Betts¥update bets to UCLA

Didn’t get in foul trouble? In 9.6 minutes? I would hope not
Betts averaged 0.3 fouls per game. Over 40 minutes, that'd translate to 1.2 fouls per game. My point with mentioning that is that her fouls per game is extremely low for a good rim protector.

For comparison, teammate Cameron Brink averaged 2.6 fouls per game in 24.8 minutes per game. Foul trouble is something that caused her problems that Betts (in a small sample size) didn't have issues with.

And this is why I can’t stand stats, they don’t paint a good picture. Anyone who has played basketball at the YMCA knows that when you get tired, you tend to foul more because your body doesn’t do what your brain tells it to do. Meaning, if she played standard minutes she’d have more fouls than a simple math equation or statistic would lead you to believe. Even Clark’s stats don’t tell the whole story. People are impressed by them but when they watch HOW she plays, they are blown away. It can go either way, but that’s why I can’t stand STATS, because that’s just what they are… STATS 🤯

Stats, at least in numbers sufficiently large to aggregate for comprehension, tell almost the complete story. Using your example we know exactly how many minutes and how many fouls each player committed. Anything else is a guess. Perhaps Betts is better conditioned, gets better position or a less physical player. Anyone or all three of could account for a much lower foul per minute played as easily as more fatigue.

Once you leave the numbers you drift into the world of the subjective valuations and magical thinking (e.g. the Padilla never had a chance crowd).

In this case I'm inclined to believe that the 6'7" national #1 recruit is probably just a better defender gaining advantages from height and athleticism that don't require risking fouls while a smaller or less athletic/talented player has to make up with hustle and toughness and those characteristics both generate fouls.

People lie about the numbers but the numbers never lie about the people.

What I actually find odd is why leave a Hall of fame coach, possibly the best school in the country academically and a top 10 program year after year? 99% of women aren’t going pro so a Stanford education isn’t a bad thing to have. But by the way, please come to Iowa!

When you’re the #1 recruit in your class, you want to play. She was likely never gonna play alongside or ahead of Cameron Brink, who is an All American. Stanford also had a relatively down year and they lost 2 others to the portal. Something else may be going on, but I think the first sentence sums it up.

I wonder if some top post players feel it's not challenging enough to play for Iowa? Might be too easy with Clark feeding them the ball and other sharp shooters pulling defenders away. They might want to go to some place where they can show they have to maximize their skills to earn the points.
How can I put this diplomatically?

NO!

Well if Lauren wants to score 20-25 a game and be the second best player on potentially a NC team, her best shot is at Iowa. Can you imagine the dimes that CC would drop on a talented 6' 7' post player not to mention she would see a ton on 1 on 1 defense because the opponents would not be able to play off of our guards. If it doesn't happen.....well...keep moving on.

You have to imagine one big reason she went to Stanford was to compete for NCs. We have an even better situation to offer to her regarding minutes, potential scoring, AND legit competing for a NC.
Not sure what the NIL for her looks like potentially and it's hard to tell the motivation of young student athletes at times.

Clark to Betts for the next two years would literally be unfair to the rest of women's basketball and I'd love it! Kind of like it has been in the past with all the talent going to a few schools only. I don't know where she'll end up going but she really should consider Iowa based on that alone. This team would be a heavy favorite during their time here together.

None of us know the interpersonal situation, e.g. who likes whom, etc... but the objective mutal benefit is obvious.

National title contender anyway. Check. Best player and point guard in the game. Check. Stable program with historic success, albeit not FFs but a good NCAA record. Check. Best post coach in the country. Check. Former HS teammate so a little bit of home in IC. Check. Three starters returning from a national title game team. Check.

Iowa's only weakness was lack of height. You solve that weakness and you really have the makings of like a two year period of dominance.

It makes so much sense so it obviously won't happen.

Yep, you checked all the boxes from a bball perspective why Betts should come here but maybe Iowa is just not her cup of tea from other perspectives. I agree that if Marshall, Martin, Clark and others are hitting perimeter shots Betts would be so open for so many feeds she could be putting up 30 pts per game

and Jan Jenson is as good a post player coach there is

my god, if Betts has good hands, imagine the passes CC would be throwing to her, especially with her height/length

can't teach 6'7".
I still love the fact that Jensen was finally rewarded for the work she's done throughout her career, taking home National Assistant COY.

are you saying Iowa would be favored to win 2 consecutive National Championships?

not sure @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset 's heart would be able to take it!

I was surprised to see Betts in the Portal. Towards the end of the season, both Brink and her were on the court together and formed a very formidable combination using a high-lo attack. I don't know why she didn't play more earlier in the season, perhaps because of the depth that Stanford had at the 4 and 5 position and sometimes it takes bigs a little more time to adjust to the physical play in college. There is no finer coach in the college game than Tara (11 final fours and 3 National Championships plus and Olympic Gold) and her staff is top notch.

I saw some interesting takes about her this season. Didn’t develop Haley Jones, not knowing how to manage her talent. May just he chatter we’ll all forget about a year from now, but always interesting to see some cracks in the porcelain.

One thing that most people are not considering... OGrady was her team-mate, and they seem to be on good terms. Right now OGrady is projected to start at the 5, bringing in Betts would likely change that. Its possible that Betts would not come here unless OGrady makes it clear that she be happy with not starting. Team chemisty is still a thing, and recruiting a good friend of someone who has been waiting patiently for their shot might could easily disrupt that.

Once again, Iowa can't have nice things, and it's another case of people seeing "Iowa" having athletic success................and NOBODY wanting to either see that success continue, or help us to get even better.

Don't give up hope people! I mean, we've still got a heckuva chance to pickup some blue chip portal WR talent for the FB team. Right?

Sad Happy Hour GIF
