WBB Game Thread: lowa @ Drake

23.9 left tied at 82. Should be able to take the last shot unless there's a wide open layup. Even then I wouldn't want Drake to have a chance again before the buzzer.

1/2 from the line. That's a theme over the past 8 minutes. 89-86 with a jumpball that goes Iowa's way after a miss from deep by Meyer. 16 seconds

Clark makes both 91-86. Drake flails into the lane and doesn't get the call. Shooting 2 more FTs to end this mess. Molly Davis makes one. 92-86

Well we won but it feels like a loss tbh. We are not the #4 team in the country and that's ok. Just got to forget about rankings and get better one game at a time. I think we can chalk a small part of the sloppiness to it being a chippy, in-state rivalry game. First game on the road too. Glad we got this experience before heading on the road to Kansas State and the Oregon tournament.

Credit to Drake for being well prepared and executing an offensive game plan. Iowa is soooo susceptible to teams who clear out the paint and force us to guard cuts to the basket and dribble penetration. Our starters range from average to terrible at defending those actions. Luckily we seemed to do a better job at stepping to the ball and denying the easy pass to cutters in the second half. But Marshall, Czinano, and Warnock all got blown by off the bounce way to many times. And when that happened, the rim-protection and help rotations were slow and foul prone at best, nonexistent at worst

Broken nose Kate is a ghost of the player the healthy Kate can be. I feel for her. There were a few possessions where I noticed she struggled to see and catch the ball when it was directly in front of her. She is a fighter, but I'm glad we rested her quite a bit in regulation. On that note, I *really* wish the coaches trusted one of Wetering or Affolter (or Stuelke??) at the 3, because we really could have used a bit more size there when Kate was on the bench. Davis did a commendable job filling in, but a backcourt trio of Clark, Marshall, and Davis is bound to lead to a mismatch for one of them. When they got posted up there's not much we could do, and Drake did a great job isolating that mismatch down low. Possession after possession it led to a bucket for them, a foul on us, or both. Even Warnock struggled to guard Berg in that action.

On offense, I'd love if Davis and Clark could play off of each other a bit more in the half court. I like what Davis running the point when Clark is resting, but when Davis is playing the 2, I feel like she fades into the background too much. I wonder if Clark is just too used to playing alongside Marshall who is a great shooting specialist and post feeder but can't facilitate like Davis can. I hope the coaches try to integrate that more because we'll need it against better teams.

Stuelke brought some much needed fire off the bench. It is nice that we can play small with her at the 5 when needed, because that was our best defensive look against Drake's 5-out offense. Stuelke is unpolished offensively, but crashes the offensive boards hard. She was a huge difference maker in that regard. There was a possession where even though she missed her own put-back, it led directly to a Czinano offensive board and put-back that wouldn't have happened without Stuelke. She'll learn to be more judicious with her fouls as the season goes on.

Credit to Dinnebier. She made life difficult for Clark on both ends. That was about the most difficult 26 points I’ve seen a player put up.

Defense is lousy. Rebounding was pretty lousy. Like what I’ve seen out of Davis and Stuelke. Worried about our depth when Warnock-Martin-Marshall are ineffective. Martin really really struggled.

I agree on basically everything. The only thing I'll add is that we might not be great, but I'm not sure it's clear there's a better team for #4. Louisville is in a battle with Belmont. Tennessee got rolled by Ohio State. UConn won't be the same with its injuries. Beyond the top couple teams, it's a crap shoot this year.

Drake is also good. They are projected to win the MVC, I thought, and were right outside the top 25.

Lot's of respect for Iowa but sour grapes as well for multiple reasons. I was shocked Meyer was playing so much/so well. The girl who guarded Clark did so all during high school. Meyer knows everything about the top players. Game was at Drake.

All tells me that this is a rivalry game and we got away unharmed.

Not our greatest day for sure but there was a lot to like. Drake is a good team on their home court with a lot to prove. Iowa while not at their best was able to withstand Drakes best efforts and prevail. This is a good and deep Iowa team. Hannah Stuelke is the next great Hawkeye. Enjoy this team and this season. We have a chance to do great things.
