WBB recruiting

We've been here all long!! Let me see, 20 plus wins a year, NCAA every year, recruiting on the rise year after year after year. Whats not to like. You want a successful Iowa program the women's basketball team is near the top.

Oak,

who are the potential 2016 posts with size that you are referring to?

Some 2017 posts in Iowa's Midwest recruiting territory....
Bailey Helgren, Metro Stars Black and Edina, is huge (6-foot-5 with very sturdy build) but
mobile and athletic. I saw her finish in transition, I saw her shoot the3. Sky's the limit. Ranked #2 in the MN class of 2017.
Sidney Cooks
6-4 St. Josephs HS WI
Madison Treece
6-4 Rock Bridge HS MO

Re: Iowa WBB Freshman Classes

Tagyn Larson (6'2" Class of 2015 Wing) is rated a three star, 90 scouts rating and #16 position rank.

Evaluation: Long, agile and versatile perimeter threat handles, attacks in transition; quick, active on glass; triple-threat creator; developing mid-range game consistency.

Could the same be said about Mackenzie Meyer? I don't understand why she isn't ranked.
Mackenzie has been playing for All Iowa Attack for at least the last two years as far as I can determine. Last summer she played up one year as did AIA teammate and co-commit Amanda Ollinger. Mackenzie was the second leading scorer (after Nebraska native, Huskers 2015 commit and former HS teammate of Alexa Kastanek Jess Shepard) despite being a year younger than most of her teammates and opponents. Amanda, (also a year younger) was the fourth leading scorer and second in rebounds per game. Both Mackenzie and Amanda shot the ball with very high percentage. Mackenzie lead the team in steals.

Re: Recruiting a Top Post

Oakhawk mentions Sidney Cooks of Kenosha, WI St Joseph as a Hawkeye target for 2017. Undoubtedly, she is the highest priority recruit for Bluder, who will be taking probably only two players in the 2017 class.

It would be an absolutely sensational coup if the Hawkeyes could get a commitment from Cooks: she likely will be the top post in the nation, almost certainly in the Midwest. Every recruiting service has her a top 10/top 25 candidate.

This will be a task like cleaning the Augean stables: Purdue has been all over her since the 8th grade; in the BT Michigan State, Wisky, Nebraska offered her as a freshman--and I believe Iowa did this summer. Along with a lot of major powers. While I like Bluder's chances against Purdue & Nebbie, the question is whether the kid will be seduced by a national power like UConn, Duke, Stanford...or (my guess) either Notre Dame or Louisville. This is a girl who openly dreams of her WNBA future.

But if Iowa could somehow pull it off, CVooks would definitely make us a contender for three or four Final Fours.

Oakhawk also lists Madison Treece (who just transferred from the Mizzou state champions to the next Mizzou state champions). Treece is a more husky, less agile but still athletid with good speed, more a passing post than Cooks. She has a sister playing at Kansas State, and she is at home at Mizzou U. so she may be hard to keep from committing to K-State or Mizzou.

She may remind Hawkey fans of Megan Johnson, albeit a lot less lanky. She is definitely Bluder's kind of recruit, and the family environment at Iowa could be a big attraction. My guess is that the Hawkeyes have a very strong chance of landing Treece, whose interior passing and rebounding would make her an ideal addition.

The Helgren girl isn't yet getting the attention centered on Cooks or even Treece, but Minnesota (and Wisky) has been a rewarding recruiting grounds for Bluder & staff. Helgren definitely has the height & bulk to be a formidable defender, and she runs well enough and is agile enough to be considered the top prospect among Minnie HS interior players in her class (among 2016 prospects, Iowa is also looking at another top Minnie forward, the Fredrickson girl from Minnetonka). IMO both likely are in the fallback category of Hawkeye priorities.

The way I see it Bluder may not be resigned yet to looking ahead to 2017. There are two very, very appealling possibilities in neighboring Illinois---and while it has not been a state where Bluder & staff have concentrated their efforts, the circumstances of Teri McCoy of Champaign Centennial and Jeannie Boehm of Winnetka New Trier make them less likely candidates to sign with the Illini.

McCoy would be as big a "get" as Cooks, only a year sooner. She is a do-everything who does it all extremely well---a top 25 prospect to every rating service. She is on the radar of every national power---but my guess is that she will commit to Notre Dame. She is certainly worth a full-court press by the Hawkeyes, but there is no solid evidence that interest could be or become reciprocal.

Jeannie Boehm is an equine of a dissimilar hue. Academically oriented, has expressed her desire to play in a family-style atmosphere, with the sort of teammates that define the Iowa program year after year. Bluder, Kirkpatrick etal are the kind of coaches she clearly wants to play for. Her skills match well what Iowa wants and needs to complete the outstanding roster that the Hawkeyes have assmbled for the next four/five years. Iowa combines the high quality academics and the Final Four hoops potential that should make Boehm give a lot of consideration to the Hawkeyes.

Re: ESPN rating of Tagyn Larson

Very good news that ESPN has been so impressed with Larson, despite all the evaluation time that she has missed a summer ago and last HS season (when despite her limited play, she was twice named 1st team All State in large school class). A 90 rating is very close to the line between three & four star--suggesting that a full season now will elevate her to a 4-star rating. The #16 rank is already impressive for a SF/WF.

Prospect Nation has both Sevillian & Ollinger as 4-star players in the 2016 class. Blue Star rates Sera as #29 in 2016. If Larson gets rated a 4-star next year that will mean all but Meyer of the eight recruits in 2015 & 2016 classes have been rated a 4 star and ranked in the top 100 for each year. And those of us who have watched Meyer play in HS (1st team All State large schools as a freshman--maybe the best player in Iowa as a sophomore) are very aware that anyone who doesn't realize that she defines top 100 prospect also predicted the Kansas City Royals to finish last in the AL Central Division.

What is the deal with Haley Lorenzen? Daughter of Al Lorenzen, she's a five-star post for 2014 that played at Iowa City High and is attending Florida. Did Iowa not recruit her hard?

very simple- Haley wanted to spread her wings and get out of IC. Grandparents don't live too far from UF.

Exactly. She also wanted to major in something (can't remember what) that the UI doesn't offer. The Hawks would have loved to have had her, but it just wasn't in the cards. Haley's a great kid and I hope she does well at UF.

Wasn't Haley into Fashion design or merchandising? I seem to recall it was something like that.
On the post front, if Iowa could haul in one of the listed great posts around the Midwest, it would make the team a B1G contender for years.
I agree on Makenzie Meyer. She is kind of under the radar for now but she has been putting in long practice hours to improve and is already a very solid player. I think she could turn out to be better than her former teammate, Jadda Buckley.

Listing 2016 and 2017 targets to bump the thread.
2016 Courtney Frederickson 6-1 G/F MN
2017 Bailey Helgren 6-5`P MN
2017 Sidney Cooks 6-4 F/P WI
2017 Madison Treece 6-4 P MO
2017 Lynsay Robson 5-10 G MN
2017 Tylar Bennett 6-4 P/F MI
2017 Destiny Pitts 5-10 G MI

OakHawk,
Do you know if 2016 Illinois prospects Jeannie Boehm (6'3" F/C) or Tori McCoy (6'4" F) are Iowa 'targets'? TiggerHawk mentioned them earlier.

Lisa has said that they are grooming Chase Coley to play in the post. And Megan Gustafson (6-4) comes in 2015. With 4 scholarships spoken for in 2015 and 4 in 2016, they would have to be creative to fit another player in.

Oak,

Are we going to continue to recruit Sellers in the event a wing player transfers or what have you.

Or has that ship sailed?

AS far as recruiting Sellers, I saw her this summer at GTL and thought she was a solid player. but at this point, with all the recent commits, I don't see how they could fit her in.

Tagyn Larson was the first verbal commitment for Iowa's incoming class of 2015. She committed around Thanksgiving time last year (almost one year ago).

The 6-foot-2 Larson picked the Hawkeyes over offers from Iowa State and Nebraska.

I intend to post updates here on this thread of her senior year so everyone will know how she is doing.
