it would be really hard {or really easy maybe} to stage this thing and consistently get the same results {plus or minus a win or two, and a bowl win or two} year in and year out for 25 freakin' yrs. think about it: that's a heck of a job somebody is doing. if they are doing it.

I understand why some might think he tanks games with the strategy of playing in minor bowls he can win versus major bowls where he will be out-coached.
One thing that probably feeds this theory was when he was quoted by network commentators over a decade ago telling his coaches, "If we keep winning this season we're gonna go to a real bowl game and get out butts kicked".
The fact his mind works that way is revealing, the additional fact he was willing to say it out loud should've got him canned.

I’ve stayed away for a bit because I didn’t want to be seen as rubbing the outcome in anybody’s face or anything. Not to defend Ferentz, but I’m sure Nebraska fans said the same thing after Solich and Pelini. They have the longest active bowl drought of ANY P4/5 team. They appear to be back, but if you would have said that to any sane person, Neb would go 8 years without a bowl and somebody like Vandy and Wake Forest would, I mean I think we can all agree that thought would be unfathomable.

IMO Ferentz has done a great job, I personally would be overjoyed to see ISU have Iowa’s success, but I get the angst. Losing games where you have a 187 yard rusher, a good defense, etc. should be incomprehensible. I think a lot of Cade’s limitations can be placed on his injury history so I don’t want to be too hard on the guy but I just think it’s unserious to keep running him out there. It was unserious to keep running Hill out there. I do not and cannot understand it.

A few other random thoughts, some of which aren’t really original:

1. I’ve seen people blaming Ferentz for being too conservative in this game, but I highly doubt Ferentz feels this way. Honestly I think a very good case could be made that if Brian was the OC Iowa likely wins that game. Iowa would not have tried those rinky dink plays on 1stand goal, Iowa probably runs a whole lot more, they don’t try that throwback pass that is picked off early after halftime, they don’t go for 2, etc. I think anybody expecting Ferentz to change to be more aggressive after this game I think is in for a very rude awakening. I think it goes the other way.
2. McNamara looked good early with the scripted plays, and a team having early success against ISU’s defense is pretty standard practice because ISU always comes out extremely vanilla on D to see what the other team is trying to do and then make adjustments. As soon as ISU started bringing pressure McNamara buckled like a belt. I believe he likely does look really good in practice when it’s essentially running a 7-on-7 game. But once he had to move around and avoid getting hit I mean it was really bad.
3. Been said enough but KJ is legit and they need to lean on him the rest of the year.

I could go for a while because that was just one of the strangest games I’ve ever seen.

You could argue that it was an entertaining game if you define that as it being undecided down to the last minute.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a passing offense that can sling it around the field consistently. Or a qb that has mobility and can make plays. Or a coaching staff that continues to push the offense to light up the scoreboard then I'd say not great on the entertainment front.

I'd settle for just being competent. The Iowa offense is still far from competent, particularly with respect to passing and QB play.
