I just finished a wonderfully engaging biography titled 17 Carnations, by Andrew Morton. It is the most recent book to delve into one of the most scandalous affairs of modern times. The abdication of a King of England to marry a twice divorced American woman. The book details the petulant behavior during Edward's short reign, and during their time in Europe and the Bahamas during WWII. During this time much is unclear as to did they give the Nazi's secrets, or were they duped into divulging secrets? Were they simply careless. The book doesn't hold anything back in exploring the mixed political sentiments of the elites of England during this time. Quite a few held pro Nazi views, though that was for a variety of reasons. Some viewed Hitler to be a champion of the common man, some viewed him as the only thing standing between them and the Bolsheviks, and some just admired the man for getting things done in Germany. How he was doing things seemed to be ignored, or marginalized.
It is fascinating to read how much effort England expended into retrieving documents from Nazi archives, and correspondence between the royals. It's even more fascinating to read about how much of this was destroyed, and is still held in classified files decades after Edward, Wallis Simpson, and any other person marked by scandal died.

Would not be surprised if they were Nazi sympathizers there was a lot of that in both England and the United States. Hard to think they would have known much in the way of state secrets they could share.

Interesting to think of what may have been if Hitler would have moved against Russia first. Probably would have found allies in Poland and Romania. If Hitler would have went that way it is hard to see England and France interfering.

Hitler wanted the choicest bits of Poland, but despised the ethnic make up of the residents. Romania was allied with Hitler and participated in some brutal fighting from Italy through the Caucuses. I'm not sure if that's what you meant.

Edward was a womanizer and Wallis Simpson fascinated
him. His love for her defeated any loyalty to the British
crown. It is difficult for Americans to see that ritual power
does not mean much to people who are romantics at heart.

Charles Lindberg was as well...even FDR thought he was a great leader until he went a little crazy...then again neither cared for the Jew which makes me wonder what they did to deserve such hate from so many influential people..

The book touches on the absolute adulation Edward received every time he stepped foot in America. When he was Governor of the Bahamas during WWII his only escape was to Miami, and then by train up the East Coast for shopping sprees and medical appointments. He met with a lot of Americans who agreed with his views on the Nazis. I have on my book shelf a book called. Arsenal of Democracy, about how GM cranked out B-24's. One of their top execs was a Nazi lover.

Well, the British monarchy were a bunch of krauts: Queen Victoria married a German, Prince Albert, and their house became Saxen-Coburg-Gotha. It was only in WWI in 1917 that George V changed the name to Windsor (named after Windsor Castle). You can change the name, but they're still krauts.

I am white and Germanic and damn proud of it...at the turn of the century there were tons of pan Germanics and occultists who believed in the superiority and greatness of the destiny of white Germanic people(read Madam Helena Petrovna Blavatsky)of which the British were.Hitler loved the British...hoped they would come in on their side...the reason he allowed them to escape from Dunkirk. Hitler's plan was to restore Eddie to the throne after he had won the war.

I didn't know that. Thanks for posting it.
