I just finished a wonderfully engaging biography titled 17 Carnations, by Andrew Morton. It is the most recent book to delve into one of the most scandalous affairs of modern times. The abdication of a King of England to marry a twice divorced American woman. The book details the petulant behavior during Edward's short reign, and during their time in Europe and the Bahamas during WWII. During this time much is unclear as to did they give the Nazi's secrets, or were they duped into divulging secrets? Were they simply careless. The book doesn't hold anything back in exploring the mixed political sentiments of the elites of England during this time. Quite a few held pro Nazi views, though that was for a variety of reasons. Some viewed Hitler to be a champion of the common man, some viewed him as the only thing standing between them and the Bolsheviks, and some just admired the man for getting things done in Germany. How he was doing things seemed to be ignored, or marginalized.
It is fascinating to read how much effort England expended into retrieving documents from Nazi archives, and correspondence between the royals. It's even more fascinating to read about how much of this was destroyed, and is still held in classified files decades after Edward, Wallis Simpson, and any other person marked by scandal died.
