What’s the Upside?

I feel like padilla’s career completion percentage would be higher if he had the chance to pad some stats against inferior competition. Maybe not 20% higher but there’s a pretty significant difference between Minnesota and Nevada or directional Illinois school
3-4 games with Padilla (one being where had the flu) vs Spencer's "body of work" is not comparable and a poor argument. Don't give me 'he practices' better than Alex because I heard that from Fran re: Josh Oglesby and tell us how that worked out. Game film doesn't lie and Alex needs more than a few games especially against non B10 teams to get into a groove however it doesn't appear that will workout here..

I hate to say it, but I have a close source at practice every day that says he probably agrees with BF’s assessment of the qb position. Says our backups in practice look really bad. Said today was pretty brutal in practice. He didn’t elaborate, but said May and Labas can’t even seem to break the huddle correctly.
Then it is the staffs obligation to recruit, develop and search the portal for better QBs. Are they waiting around for Tom Brady II just to show up at their doorstep?

Yep. Our Stillers are every bit as bad if not worse. It's literally, uniforms and all, like watching a re-run of Saturdays on Sundays. Football Purgatory.
Terrible. We’re heading toward 1-7 and in the drivers seat for the first pick of the draft. Tomlin fatigue is real and I’m wondering if the Steelers need a change . I’m proud of the fact that the Rooney family is not a knee jerk reaction kind of ownership family, but things are pretty bad in the burgh

I don't care what your fake inside sources are saying about PRACTICE, we have all seen AP play in GAMES - He has experience winning football games. He has shown to have mobility in the pocket and ability to extend plays that our QB1 has not. Having a 2nd string QB with those credentials is a major luxury, and our clueless coaches aren't using it despite their QB1 having the worst season of anyone in the country. It is plain inexcusable. There is simply no way to defend it unless both Iowa's QB2 and QB3 have unreported injuries and are both physically unable to play.

Ya know we don't need to be explosive on offense to be really good, just decent enough to get a few first downs on most possessions and score more TDs than field goals in the redzone.

Even if Padilla practiced like total shit, which I don't believe he does, he should still be given a shot because what is going to happen? Things literally cannot get any worse as we have the worst offense is FBS, and the worst Qb in FBS. If Padilla is worse than that, which its damn near impossible to be, then he will be the new worst Qb in FBS.

Reporter should have said "a chance to win".

I see JL and AP gone next year then we are with a true Freshman, ZERO experience, learning the toughest offense in all of football.
Good, they should transfer because they all suck baLLs. Go get a transfer QB, because what we have in this cupboard is pathetic.

40% of Iowa's drives end without a first down. What is the upside to doing something different?

40 points out of 12 times in the red zone (12 times in the red zone in 6 games is embarrassing). What is the upside to doing something different?

C'mon man. Everyone knows with Padilla or Labas under center we'd be in 132nd place out of 131 teams in total offense. Duh! So obvious.

I found his “mobile QB = backyard football” comment much worse! What a disingenuous response; no One says our QB should be running around improvising on every play. Granted the 2002 OL was way better, but we basically ran this same offense (not backyard football) with Brad Banks, and it sure was helpful when He could extend plays with his legs

Ol' Doodle heard the same thing from a reliable source. May is a notorious low clapper. Guys don't even know when he's breaking the huddle and when he's waving weirdly at them. Labas gets lost frequently between his dorm and the practice complex. They had to put directions in his smartphone. Of course then they had to teach him how to use a smartphone. Padilla? He's often refused entry into the practice complex because no one knows who he is. But it's all good because we've got Spencer the Great, poised in his 5th year in the program to "develop" us all the way up to 130th place in total offense this year. Plus we have the leadership of BF, who is a lifelong learner.

That lays bare the illogical logic KF employs regarding the most important individual position in all of team sports. "Mobile" to them is a negative because they equate it primarily with taking off and running with the ball. But "mobile" can also be defined as the incredibly valuable skill of moving around in and managing the pocket...avoiding onrushing defenders just long enough to find someone downfield. Brady, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Favre epitomize this type of "mobility"...and it's yet another skill Petras is utterly devoid of.

But yeah Brian...."mobile" has only ONE definition..."back yard football".

F---ing idiot.

Really hope AP and JL transfer out. Who would want their kid playing for someone who is so flippant regarding a player?

How do you know the cupboard is pathetic?

No one gets a chance to see it.

At this point, the coaches are afraid to change and possibly be questioned about their judgment.
What on earth would make you think any of the QBs we have in this room are any good? Petras, awful. Padilla was not good when he was in. If a guy can't jump even the backup QB who isn't good, then there is little doubt, he too, is not going to be good. However, if you think so....well.....not sure what to say.

The only thing we know is SP is horrible.

No other QB has been given the long leash Peyras has gotten.

Good God. When asked that question about giving AP a chance and you answer "What's the upside?" Ouch. I would not be a happy camper if I was AP. What a kick to the nuts.

I love how they always act all confused when someone asks them a tough question about the offense. Come on, man. You know exactly what is being asked, so don't sit there with a perplexed look on your face. Then ultimately we just get snarky answers in response.

Look, I will always appreciate what KF has accomplished here, particularly prior to 2010, but I'm really starting to develop a distaste for him and BF. It would be one thing if I thought any effort was being made to look for solutions for this offense, or that any type of change is being considered, but... It's quite clear that BF is keeping his OC/QB coach jobs no matter what, and our backup QB's will remain backups.

The upside is you tried something / anything to right the ship. I would rather lose worse with a different qb just for the sake of trying. This coaching staff is OK hitting their thumb with a hammer cus they might hit a different finger if they move the thumb

So, you've concluded with no doubt that Padilla, who has been 3-0 as a starter for us, beating 9-win Minnesota, and has shown similar overall numbers to SP while unequivocally being more mobile, is not an upgrade from Petras based on his limited playing time, compared to SP's 25-or-so games of failure after failure?

Edit - Oh, and what about KF's history of managing QB's makes you think that JL or CM would get a fair shake this season?

You thought Padilla was good? Holy sh** our fans have been hypnotized with terrible QB play. Do yourself a favor and go watch another football game around the country. Don't be specific, pick any game and watch the QB. Hell, watch the backup QB when the starter gets injured. In Padilla's 3 games last year as starter, he had a QB rating of 61.7, 76.7, and 15. Yes, he went 3-0, with a whopping 2 TD passes(one of which was a 1 yard pass to Johnson who made the Iowa play of the year breaking those two tackles and running it in for a TD), and yes it would make everyone happy that KF changed things up, but if any of these QBS are our starting QB next year, we will suck on offense again. That is my original point.

The argument is whether or not SP is the best we have. I think there is strong evidence, based on what AP has done with the small amount of time he's had to show it, that given the same opportunity as SP, would do better. I am well aware that overall our QB room is well below standard, but that doesn't mean that we don't have a guy on the bench with experience who is probably better than the worst QB in America, which is who we are playing. KF has a history of not playing a backup QB who ended up being quite a bit better than the starter.
