One of my biggest thrills was flying on a charter flight
from Cedar Rapids to L.A.to see Iowa in the Rose Bowl.
Riding above the clouds was a majestic sight. It was like
being in "Hawkeye Heaven".

Although Iowa lost to UCLA in the 1986 Rose Bowl, it was
still a great experience to see a football game with over
100,000 fans in the stadium. Chuck Long did his best but
it was not enough.

I was thinking about guys and gals sharing their
mountain top experiences with Hawkeye sports.

I screamed "he's gone" the moment Jordan Canzari got past the shoulder of the Nebraska linebacker in Memorial in '15( the 2nd long TD) . I swear half the stadium could have heard me. I lived in Nebraska for 13ish years and getting to do that in front of all my nebraska friends was AWESOME.

Iowa 10, Nebraska 7 -- 1981

I had been in Lincoln in 1980 when the Hawkeyes were embarrassed by a Nebraska team 57-0, including a long field goal on the last play of the first half. Well played, Mr. Osborne.

Anyway, Kinnick went crazy during the second half of that cataclysmic 1981 victory, and as the final seconds ticked off the clock the stadium reverberated with delirious fans shouting "Rose Bowl! Rose Bowl! Rose Bowl!" After 20 years of not just losing but generally getting our noses shoved into the mud in abject blowouts, Hayden's opening game of season 3 may not have an equal. And no, unless you followed Iowa from 1962 on, you have no idea. It's not your fault; it's just the way it is.

And, of course, Iowa DID go on to the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1982, when it was still the biggest game in the land.

But it was that Iowa victory over Nebraska, going from a 57-0 annihilation to a 10-7 victory in the space of 12 months, that put Iowa back on the college football map where it has remained almost without interruption ever since.

I went to both of those games with my Dad. We talked about that 10-7 win on his deathbed.

When Iowa upset Michigan, 9-7, in 1981 in Ann Arbor, I remember heading out to the Cedar Rapids airport to welcome the team home. I was 9 at the time. The players got off the plane and walked past the fans to board their charter bus back to Iowa City. But Hayden headed across the parking lot to his car (I guess he was driving on his own back to Iowa City). My dad swung me up on his shoulders, and we joined the crowd following Hayden to his car, chanting "Hayden! Hayden! Hayden!" The following Monday at school, some kids said they saw me on the local news, which had been covering the return. Good times.

That 1981 season-opening win over Nebraska was great, as was the season finale against Michigan State. We knew we really were going to the Rose Bowl as the MSU game went on. It was amazing to see so many fans joining the cheerleaders for push-ups after scores. As a member of the band, all of the Tournament of Roses events were great - except for the game itself. Pregame performance at the home openers were a huge rush.

Strictly as a fan in attendance, the 2005 Capital One Bowl finish was incredible. Shutting out Michigan 26-0 in 1984 was amazing to see. (At the time, we didn't know it would take another 30 years for Michigan's next one.)

I'm sure we could all list many games we only saw on TV. Last season's beat down of Ohio would be the most recent.

Wearing my ann arbor is whore t-shirt in Ann arbor while Iowa gave them there worst loss in 50 years. (Something like that)
There was death threats.

Iowa v. Nebraska -- 1981. That was an incredible day that seemed to come from nowhere. After the game we partied downtown with the Husker faithful (surprisingly good folk), and I must have shouted "We Hucked the Fuskers!" about 100 times.

Iowa vs. MSU - 1981. Simply epic. "We're going to the Rose Bowl". It happened but it was hard to believe. Iowa needed an OSU victory over Mich to go to the RB. Some where in the 2nd half, that fans started cheering for no apparent reason. But it was the fans listening on their radios hearing that OSU scored late to take the lead. Had the stomach flu but still one of my favorite memories (honest! Had one beer!). My best buddy got engaged that night.

Iowa v Mich - 1985. Arguably the greatest game in Iowa history. I had 50 yard line seats thanks to a friend. We sat a couple of rows behind Bill Happel's mother - Bill had an incredible game that day! A FG as time expired just made it perfect.

Iowa v LSU - Capital One Bowl. Absolutely great for 3 quarters, bad for most of the 4th quarter, then the Hawks pull off a miracle. It is the only bowl game I have attended and had my wife and 3 boys with us. The family picture taken by a nearby fan moments after the game is perhaps the best family photo we ever took.

I also attended the 2005 Capital One Bowl and watching Holloway cross the goal line for his only career touchdown was epic. I was amazed at how fast the LSU fans cleared out of the stadium while the Hawkeye faithful celebrated. Marv Cook's winning touchdown against OSU was great as well as the other games mentioned

Nebraska fans ain’t nobody’s friends.

1. Was at Hitler's Eagles Nest (although he never visited the place, it was his, a gift from admirers) and heard a touring woman from the American South ask her husband, "Earl, why din't we bomb this place??"

2. Caught my shoe on fire in the Rockies. Was sitting around the fire in front of the tent. Was drinking at the time.

Hitler visited his eagles nest... he didn’t like it tho, but he always felt the capital of the Nazi party should be in Austria not Berlin

Heck one quick google search said he visited atleast 14 times

One of my top non-hawkeye moments was last December when we visited Ireland and England. The Liverpool experience (Beatles) for me was breathtaking. Being inside the Cavern Club was astounding.
