What is a piece of "improved" technology that you think is actually worse and makes life more annoying?

My nominee is the Apple TV remote. In fact, the specific complaint I have is a problem with quite a few new device remotes/interfaces.

It is the goddam super-sensitivity.

Back in the day, to change a channel or turn off power or switch inputs, you had to PUSH DOWN a button with intent.

Now, my friggin' cat jumps on the couch a few inches from where the Apple remote is and BAM instead of watching the exciting end of a basketball game, it has switched to the PS5 input or put on the stupid HGTV channel my wife was watching previously. You breathe on the damn thing and it is activated. I hate this. Same with the insanely sensitive screens these days - just this morning when I reached into my pocket to get my phone out at the grocery store, I opened the damn garage door back at my house because I forgot to shut the myQ app.

And to cut the smartasses off at the pass, I know:

Apple's remotes and mice are just bad.

My vote is the technology that kills your car engine at stoplights only to restart it when you hit the gas. Dumb AF.

My wireless earbuds are hard to get out of my ears and when the case is low it sends constant messages to my phone. I don't need to know when the case battery is low when my earbuds are charged just fine.

Online test taking. We had a system that worked fine but budgets had to justify one to one computers in schools. I tried this once and realized right away that online tests just create more problems than they solve and have never used it again. Every time I open up social media I find ads from no fewer than 3 services that can be used to cheat on online tests.

This year, for the first time I had to explain to my incoming freshmen how to fill out a paper answer sheet and fill in bubbles for multiple choice questions. Ok, fine, but none of those kids are using phones or computers to get around not knowing. They are going to have to put some real effort on cheating, like writing on small scraps of paper or putting information on the palm of their hand.

The MMI on my wife's Audi.

When I'm backing out using the reverse camera, I'm not able to put the garage door down as I'm backing down the driveway. I have to press the 'X' to shut off the camera, then navigate to the garage door opener. Upon arrival, it's very convenient, though. When I get within one house distance it automatically appears and I just press it. It's the leaving the house that's the 1st-world problem pain. I miss the good ole home link on the ceiling console or rearview mirror. I just ordered an extra remote to put one on the visor and be done with it.

I'll add:

When vehicles turned from nuts and bolts that used mechanical components to operate to computers that can get totaled from a fender bender because it took out 3 cameras and sensors we lost our way a bit.

Is being able to see every angle of a Sequoia nice? Sure. So is being able to bump into something with a steel bumper and not having 900 sensors kill the vehicle. Gone are the days of lifting a hood and figuring it out.

Logitech Harmony Elite solved all my remote issues 10 years ago. When Logitech stopped making their remotes, I went into a bit of a panic (all my home theater is behind a closed cabinet), so I bought a back-up from eBay. So far, Logitech has been true to their word they will continue tech-support and updating electronic codes for existing products.

That is annoying but I didn't want to complain about it because somebody would say something snarky.

To bring up the wife's Audi again, that dadgum thing makes me very uneasy. The computer controls EVERYTHING! I can't even change a batter w/o having to access it.

Makes me glad I at least have my Jeep--I can work on that all day long.

Bluetooth. Headphones won't connect to the thing I want them to connect to because they're connected to something else somewhere in the house. Let me plug the damn thing in
What annoys me is when I turn off bluetooth to conserve battery life and it says “turning off bluetooth until tomorrow” and then it automatically turns back on in the morning.

Just turn the fvck off. I’ll decide when to turn it back on.

All of it. When I'm done with IT I'm going to be a luddite.
I have seriously thought about taking my record player a shit ton of albums, 50 boxes of books, my fishing poles and that's it and moving to a cabin by a lake when I retire. I honestly can't think of a better retirement. I'd probably keep a burner phone for emergencies and that's it.

A man can dream . . .

I love all the smart technology, but I swear when I'm backing my wife's car out the garage it sounds like a plane is going down with all the damn sensors going off!!

you're too close to the wall
you're too close to the garage
a rabbit ran past the bumper

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I love that feature. I hate driving my wife's car on road trips because she doesn't have it. What don't you like?
It doesn't allow you to get close enough to the @$$hole in front of you to let them know they need to move over. Safety, sheesh.

Honestly though, I am starting to warm up to it on longer road trips. when the idiots do finally move over, I can resume speed without thinking about it.

Agreed. My wife’s car has this and it’s annoying as hell. It can’t possibly be saving much gas. At least put a switch on the dashboard so I can decide whether or not I want to use it.
BMWs you can turn it off via a button on the dash. GM products you cannot. Or, at least you couldn't. not sure if they fixed that issue.

Self driving cars-humans can kill themselves just as efficiently by driving in the old fashion.

There needs to be 4 settings: far, medium, near, and asshole.
