What is your single favorite book?

dude i know raved about shantaram but his movie picks have proved to always be so horrible that i had zero trust in his literary taste. you however enjoyed name of the wind, which bolsters your recommendation with the requisite credibility :) i’ll have to check it out now if only to be astounded that my buddy has actually read a decent book
I found it interesting but ultimately self indulgent. And about 300 pages too long.

I don't think I have an answer for this one. For one, I read a LOT, two my memory is shit, three I don't know what would qualify something as my favorite. There are many books I've read more than once. There are books where I had to take a break from reading after finishing them because they hit so hard, books that made me cry.
Donno, but there have been a lot of great books listed here.
I appreciate my other Stephen King fans, no one writes characters that feel as real as his, the rest is just gravy.

The best story of revenge ever told...

The Count of Monte Cristo.
I really tried but could not finish that one. Loved the movie tho. Guess I'm a simpleton.

Really like Papillon. People have challenged it but if even half is true it's an incredible story.

Whiteout by Ken Follet is really good. Not as sprawling or epic as Pillars of the Earth, but good nontheless.

Just read Billy Summers by King. Really good.

Not sure I can really pick a favorite book. I'd say my favorite author right now is John Grisham.

Master and Margarita.

Coincidentally, just this am I was discussing how Pilates unforgivable sin of a lack of courage had significance both as to the religious aspect of the story but also in terms of its political theme in 30s Russia.
I have seen this book referenced in several articles about books and reading lately. I have also had it on my Goodreads "want to read" list for several years.

I love books about post-revolutionary Russia written by Russian authors. I need to give this one another look.

The Caine Mutiny. Checks a lot of boxes for me...historical fiction, wartime, US navy, nice drama, very gifted author.
The movie with Bogart, et al. is very well done and equally entertaining, although much abridged (of course)

I read a lot. When I was commuting, I read several books a week.

I must have read every series about the Orient that existed, Scotland, Ireland, France.

So it’s hard to say the best. So many have their own characteristics.
