What happens when they get here?

Refugees are given money when they arrive to help them get set up in this country. Below is what the Associated Press reported about the funds they get.

Financial help

Upon arrival in the United States, each refugee is eligible for a $1,975 arrival and placement grant that is managed by one of nine refugee resettlement agencies working with the federal government. At least $1,125 of that grant must be spent on housing, including a bed for each person, basic furniture such as a couch, kitchen items including dishes and silverware, and weather-appropriate clothing. The remainder is used to cover additional costs for the aid agency.

Low-income refugee families with children may be eligible for temporary assistance for needy families, a welfare program in which state rules govern eligibility and the amount of money families receive, for up to five years. Immigrants without children or otherwise not eligible for the temporary assistance program qualify for the refugee cash assistance program run by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. Eligibility for that program lasts eight months.

Elderly, blind or disabled refugees may be eligible for cash assistance through the Supplemental Security Income program for up to nine years.

Health Care

Low-income refugees may be eligible for Medicaid for up to seven years. While immigrants to the U.S. are not generally eligible for Medicaid, refugees invited to move to the U.S. are exempt. Each state determines which refugees meet the eligibility requirements. Those who don't qualify for Medicaid can receive refugee medical assistance for up to eight months.

Work

Refugees must register with the Social Security Administration after arrival and are almost immediately eligible for a work permit. Social services, including job placement programs, are available to refugees for up to five years.

Other Assistance

Low-income refugees may also be eligible for food-assistance programs.

The process of entry is described in the above link as well.

Is it not within our moral obligations to stop them from being gassed in their home land?

We're "morally obligated" to help 10,000 that want to live here, but 250k getting exterminated in Syria are not our concern?

You are a complex man.

How many American troop are you willing to place into harm's way? Right now, America has decided it doesn't want much exposure in the Mid East.
We (the US, NATO and the west) will do what is needed to bring peace to this region....but the effort has to start with the people of the Mid East.

This was posted in response to all the refugee posts. I wanted to edumakate myself on the process and understand it better.

I still feel that refugees end up better than our homeless (especially homeless vets).

and your point?

Vroom...you know I get a check from the government monthly for over $1700....for just sitting on my arse and reading gibberish like yours. ;)
Did you ever work and pay taxes in this country as a citizen?

All I can say Vroom is, "America! What a country!"

Do you think its our moral obligation to intervene in foreign wars? That seems to be your implication.

Seriously, did you even comprehend what you wrote?

On top of that, I'm more worried about hundreds of thousands of innocent American civilians than I am a few thousand highly trained and armed troops.

As my father used to tell me, "Life is tough all over."
The "vet" issue is nothing more than "faux outrage" and crony patriotism for the most part, unfortunately. America has never really seriously tried to involve itself with its veterans, ever. We do a lot for them, but unless there is a missing limb, a visible war injury or a fatherless/motherless family to "show", America chooses not to invest itself. Especially with its "veterans" when it comes to emotional and mental issues resulting from national service.
If America was serious, the first thing they would do is close 90% of the "veteran's hospitals" and integrate services for its vets into the private sector. Then, we would address mental illness and emotional disease as it relates to veterans and its citizens at large.
So Vroom...in this case...limited case, I might agree with you. But for far different reasons.

What are we "morally" obligated to do?
A nation's first moral obligation is to make sure that its tribe survives and prospers. Invading Syria would run counter to what I think the primary moral obligation of America should be.

In your words then, who is "its tribe" when it comes to the USA? Is it current citizens?

Morality has gone in the tubes the past several years:

"morality" Vroom is a rather subjective measuring tool.
"morality" cuts through all social levels, conservatives, moderates and liberals. People are people. It has been this way ever since man started walking the face of the earth.
morality constantly evolves.....ethics, I believe are pretty much standard.

So you are okay with our POTUS putting more effort into the refugees than into taking care of our own? Are his "moral obligations" skewed? The reason I say that is I see more on HROT griping about how the refugees should be allowed in to our great country to have a life then I have EVER seen say about our own homeless population (vets are closer to my vest than others obviously).

CONGRESS needs to change the nation's priorities. It has most recently failed to address any type of immigration reform.....it has long kicked the veteran issue down the bloody road of politics. It can't be done with an "executive order"...which is what you seem to want Obama to do.

Wait. Stop the presses. You mean to tell me that when we agree to help somebody we actually give them help? How ridiculous!

I didn't bring morality into the discussion. Ciggy did.

I was just looking for him to give his definition as to what "morality" applies to.

Because, the term is being thrown around conveniently as of late.

My point is... Let's not wear "morality" when it fits our political fashion.

I too am uncomfortable with the term morality as it applies to actions by nations and governments.

Well, it's not the best, but in a pinch, they could bop into Bass Pro or Cabellas and pick up this 20 round carbide .308 for just under $800

But, like the prison threads, it seems that your solution is to make them all as miserable as the homeless vets.

They should certainly have it no better than those, do you disagree? If so why so? Why should someone that has done zero for this country have it better than those that have?

Didn't we take away the gas a year and a half ago? Why are they leaving now?

But your stance is to race to the bottom, which is problematic.

and you are allowing the terrorist to accomplish exactly what they want to accomplish.

Actually by you letting terrorists in, YOU are allowing the terrorists to accomplish exactly what they want to accomplish.

Are you really so naive that you believe all they want to do is scare Americans? 9/11, Paris and other attacks should tell you otherwise.

You go ahead and keep telling yourself that.

Garry...who do you fear here...the refugees or the terrorists? Refugees are NOT the problem. Terrorists are.

Some of you guys think so very short term. If you think some of the refugees and their future generations aren't going to cause problems here, your heads are in the sand.

Garry...who do you fear here...the refugees or the terrorists? Refugees are NOT the problem. Terrorists are.

Let me let you in on skittle secret Joel... I'm scared of neither. It's just incredibly stupid to just let them in our country.

Let me ask you.... Are you willing to let terrorists posing as refugees in to this country? How many innocent American lives would be an acceptable loss to you?
