Whoopi Goldberg on The View about Angel Reese

Whoopi’s comments were clearly by someone who didn’t know the backstory before the last game. The Reese vs Clark, Good vs Evil storyline, is just fans and the media wanting a bigger, better story.
It’s more fun that way, and Reese was a willing participant until it didn’t go her way.

One could successfully argue she was more than a willing participant and more like the driving force.

You mean things like turnover chains, etc? Yeah, that's pretty out there.
Not to get in the middle of the Angel bashing, but turnover chains are worn by players that get turnovers. Is the crown worn by other team members for extraordinary play or just Angel?

She's not the first player to accessorize. Typically it's stars who draw attention to themselves. We seem to celebrate it in other sports like football.
No one cared about what they were doing in women's basketball until Clark became a star. Now everyone is expected to be humble in the face of her greatness.

Or just be consistent... I mean if you're going to flaunt and taunt in a win, don't become a victim in a loss... just congratulate the winner, and keep your swagger... Round 2 went their way... we will see each other again.

A crown is a little more than an accessory for a basketball player. If she wants to wear the crown that's on her, then don't play the victim when she loses. Put the crown on and walk off the court and accept the loss.

You think the hate directed at her is because of the crown?

Exactly. If you got that swag... own it.

I really don't want to bash Angel. She's a kid and doesn't deserve the hate she's gotten especially from Iowa fans. I've never watched basketball men's, women's, college, or pro on TV until end of last year. I've also only watched the Iowa Women's basketball games so I'm a newbie for the sport. I love college football and spend my weekends watching games no matter who is playing. Anyway I'm serious about my question, can you give me an example of other college athletes who have done something similar to the crown thing?

She's trying to be arrogant and the crown is just another example of her arrogance. I don't call it hate, I consider it a response to her arrogance. Any death threats are over the top and are wrong, but everyone has the right to express their thoughts about her. if she wants people to think differently of her, then she has to adjust what she's doing, don't expect others to change. A truly arrogant person doesn't really care what others think, but since she can't seem to handle the arrogant role, maybe this will be a learning experience and she will change. Giving her a pass on her behavior does not benefit her and only will encourage the same behavior. We've seen this with others, failure to hold people accountable usually ends up with more arrogance and bad decisions.

Oh right, she's the first athlete whos has appeared arrogant. That explains things.

I never said she was. But any arrogant person needs to know they might be called out on their arrogance and their actions. Expecting everyone to give her a pass and accept it is just wrong. Hopefully she learned something about herself and she might make different decisions in the future.

Also, anyone calling her out for HER actions and then labeling them a racist is wrong too. As I've stated earlier in the thread, if CC carried around now BOTH of her Naismith Trophies and had them on the bench she would be called out on it... and it wouldn't be okay because she's white and plenty of white people would be calling her out on it and if after they lost if she started crying there wouldn't be any sympathy for her.

Ooooohh...arrogance clearly has no place in sports.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Arrogance will always be in sports and life in general. But don't be surprised when people call it out. I'm not sure why you're wanting to give AR a pass to be able to do and say whatever she wants.

John McEnroe comes to mind as an athlete who carried himself in a way that was unbecoming of his sport... I don't recall white people giving him a pass; do you?

Giving her a pass for being cocky? You mean like I give a pass to nearly every other athlete at the top of their game?

Look, Clark is the hero. Every hero needs a villain. You all have chosen Reese. Clark doesn't see it that way, but you all need it to be so you vilify a girl who is just at the top of her game but happens to be on another team.
Meanwhile you all celebrate your cocky wrestlers.

This is all fine, but to expect others who aren't part of your fanbase to see someone as awful just because she is the competition is silly.

And if those cocky wrestlers get pinned, then they're going hear from people. Any sport, any player is going to get comments when they're arrogant and they lose. That's life and certainly life on the Internet these days. What people really don't want to hear is how that arrogant person is a victim and people should feel sorry for them.

There are plenty of people who hate people from "the other team". That's actually called a rivalry and people speak openly about it.
