Why Marcus Satterfield compared Iowa’s defense to church league dudes with goggles

Iowa ranks third nationally in points per game allowed and second nationally in yards per play allowed. Five of its nine wins have come with the Hawkeyes scoring 20 or fewer points.
It’s a program “comfortable,” Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said Monday, with 7-3 and 10-9 games.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield had a different — and frankly unique — metaphor to describe Iowa’s defense.
“I equate to, like, church league,” Satterfield said. “You know the high school boys, who are really good basketball players, go play in the church league gym. These old men with goggles and knee braces — (the high school players) think they’re going to run them off the court, and the old men have physically, emotionally and spiritually, competitively destroyed them in a 30-minute game.”

Iowa’s defense, Satterfield said, is “sound, physical, and disciplined” and play like their coach’s mindset.

“Their heart rate doesn’t go up,” Rhule said. “They have been doing it for a long time and they have kind of built that way. Our guys are getting used to it. Last couple of games have been like that for us. They have been doing that a long time.”
Notably, NU’s offense has had surprising success against Iowa’s defense over the years.
The Huskers had 24 points and 329 yards in a win over Iowa last season, 21 and 327 in 2021, 338 and 20 in 2020, 284 and 24 in 2019 and 400 and 28 in 2018.

Trying not to hate these Husker coaches.

Rhule seems like a good dude as well.

Can the skeleton of Tom Osborn come up with some chalkboard material?
