Why supposedly are Zadick, St. John upset w/ Iowa?

DSJ wouldn't have swerved to miss Brands standing in the road his SR year. Brands burnt him out big time. I think its better now but I think it was pretty bad then. I still think DSJ may have been one of the few Iowa guys who would have been better with Cael or Smith then brands based on his style.

No idea about Mike. Guessing he was snake bit being replaced by a guy who wasn't even as good a wrestler as he and had no offense.

Id love to hear a conversation between Zaddick, DSJ, Perry and JayBo about Brands training, peaking etc.

Amen to that. Im not sure Perry ever listened to Brands all that much considering he could put Tom on his back in the practice room and is a Smith bloodline recruited by Zalesky. We all should be so lucky to inherit that with a new job. Zalesky doesn't get enough credit for already having Perry, Keddy, Erickson, Falck, Beatty, M*, Tsirtsis already in the room for Tom.
Im not trying to take a jab at brands but after the NC st I could give 2 cents on that, just more so years of people putting Z down like he ran the program into nothing. Lets compare Brands and Zaleskys Iowa records after this season.

Really? Could have fooled me.

Letting Zalesky go was the right move.
Perry came to Iowa out of spite.
TnT saved the program from a downward spiral.
I've said it before and say it again. That 2010 recruiting class killed us. So much time, resources, and scholarship money in that class and most of those guys just didn't pan out.
This next round of recruits will be much better.

I'm going to have to disagree about DSJ. I don't think he would have done close to as well at another program. I remember seeing an interview with Ironside a couple years ago. He said he has never seen someone get more out of their talent or lack of then DSJ. DSJ was no where near a good athlete and had extremely limited offense. He had a great outside single to his opponents left leg, he could score from a scramble, he was a tough rider, and he could get away on bottom. What made him so good was he was tougher than hell and a mean SOB. He was one also one of the stingiest wrestlers I've ever seen. Brands got every once out of him as he could.

Now if you want to talk about the all the guys in the 2010 class you would have a valid point(especially with Dweiza).

I agree. And when DSJ won his title... it was the perfect storm. Everything fell PERFECTLY for him that season.

His "I really don't want to be here" looking approach his senior year was hard for a lot of fans to comprehend.

I love St. John, I certainly hope he has no negative feelings towards Iowa or the Brands bros. I think DSJ's 'burnout' his SR year was due to cutting a ton of weight. I saw him in person a few times and he was a monstrous 157. He was 6 ft tall with the frame of a 165/174 wrestling at 157. Look at Taylor who moved up right after his FR year when both he and DSJ were about the same size. He was the best guy in the weight class, but look at when he faltered at NCAA's, the Quarterfinals Friday morning after making weight vs a FR who has not been cutting hard for a whole career who came out like a ball of fire in Realbuto. If DSJ makes it to the semi's he most likely would've won the title. Also think he could have been a finalist opposite Taylor up at 165 his final year too. All just my humble opinion of course.

You obviously know more about it than I do. All I am going off of is the "body language" his senior season.

Just really seemed like he wasn't mentally in the game for a good share of the year.

I find it hard to believe that DSJ had anything but respect for Brands. He seemed like the perfect Iowa wrestler. Tough, mean, and willing to fight for 7 minutes everyday and every time. He looked beat up mentally at the NCAAs after he got beat, that I will agree with. I did not notice that before. However, I am/was not around as much as many of your guys are/were.

IIRC... I think things went down hill after he lost to Ness after he had the lead in the dual with Minny. I know his "laid back" personality seemed like an exact opposite to his coaches. But I agree that he had a good career at Iowa and I don't know of any problems he had while a Hawkeye.

Zalesky not doing crap since then while being one of the few fully funded programs in the west tells me all I need on that. This ship was losing water fast at the end of the Zalesky era. Credibility is lost with that comparison. WTF does someone getting put on their back in practice have to do with anything? Perry needed to toughen up a bit to get over the top, Brands got him there. The rest of the guys were just there when Brands came, they had not done much yet. I think D1 is a lot more competitive now than when Z was here so not that easy to compare.

ahhh...that match was painful.

It was so bad that DSJ's dad said he would never let another son of his wrestle for Tom. Right?

I think that Minnesota match was probably the most painful home meet for me to watch in recent years, prior to the NC State meet the other night. That was the same meet where Gilman got thrown to his back twice by Brancale and stuck the second time, IIRC. Just a brutally painful meet to witness as a Hawk fan.

St John was an extremely talented wrestler before coming to Iowa. Sure, he was very hard nosed and stingy, but he also had excellent technique. It's not like he just bullied people he had excellent technical abilities. He came in as a junior national champion and highly accomplished in high school. You all are making it sound like he was a bum who was only good because of Brands.

I thought the same thing. There just wasn't a lot of weight there to cut without losing muscle.

That Minny meet may have been painful to watch as a Hawks fan, but it was a great meet. If I remember correctly, Evans finally beat the Minny 174 (whose name totally eludes me) and Telford beat Nelson. Who could have predicted that those 2 would lose and Iowa would lose the meet. Definitely a crazy night.

Storley... Loved it when we beat him.

LOL at Ihawkd9times. DSJ wants to be back in Iowa City. Those close to him made it no secret at Nationals in St Louis while he was coaching at NDSU that they thought he could do a better job than Morningstar and would come back to IC in a heartbeat if offered the position.

Good, sounds like that bridge has mended then.

It was never broken... Quit grasping for things that aren't there.

Agree to disagree, I have my sources. Maybe they are off but I could care 2 sh!ts. What I care about is the current product and how we can get better. Are you honest to yourself about that?
