Wisconsin top WR Quintez Cephus out for rest of season

No. 8 Wisconsin will be without its top receiver for the rest of its run at a potential undefeated season.

Head coach Paul Chryst said earlier this week that sophomore Quintez Cephus would miss Saturday's home game against Iowa. The program's updated injury report Thursday listed Cephus as out for the remainder of the year.

Cephus injured his right leg while blocking on a running play in the third quarter last Saturday at Indiana. He had 501 receiving yards and six scores, both team highs, in the Badgers' first nine games of the year.

Wisconsin lost Jazz Peavy, another starting wide receiver, to injury in early October. Peavy hasn't been ruled out for the year, but he won't play against Iowa. The Badgers list seven players as out for the season, several of them starters.

Wisconsin (9-0) can clinch a Big Ten West Division title with a win over No. 20 Iowa this weekend. The 3:30 p.m. kickoff marks the team's first game against a ranked opponent this season.

ORIG POST:

Ninth-ranked Wisconsin will be without key players on offense and defense Saturday at home against Iowa, coach Paul Chryst said Monday.

The Badgers' top receiver, sophomore Quintez Cephus, and sophomore linebacker Chris Orr have been ruled out after suffering injuries last week in a 45-17 victory at Indiana.

Cephus' 501 receiving yards and six touchdowns lead the Badgers, and his 30 catches match tight end Troy Fumagalli for the team lead.

Orr injured his left leg early in the victory over the Hoosiers. He has recorded 35 tackles, including two sacks, to rank sixth on the team. Orr has started the past eight games for Wisconsin at inside linebacker.

Leading tackler D'Cota Dixon, a junior safety, also left the victory at Indiana with a right leg injury. He is listed as questionable for the meeting with Iowa at Camp Randall Stadium.

Few teams play better TEAM ball than the Badgers. That is arguably the biggest reason why they've been so consistent over the past many years. Furthermore, much of their play revolves around running the football and playing great D. None of the injuries impact their running the ball .... and they grow LBs on trees. Thus, if Iowa fans expect the injuries to impact the game negatively for the Badgers .... they should think again. If anything, it will make an already tight-knit group come together even closer.

So far this season, the only team who has managed to slow the Wisconsin running game was Northwestern. Will Iowa be able to do that? We'll see!

Interesting...looking at the box score Wisc had 109 yards on the ground and 197 passing yards. Cephus had 4 catches for 99 yards.

IF Iowa can slow their running game ... will Cephus's absence make a difference? Maybe. However, that still doesn't change the fact that Fumigalli is still one hell of a mismatch in his own right.

Also, Wisconsin has a great OL ... it will certainly be a huge challenge for our DL.

other than Nebraska had a winning record, and now even they don't have a winning record. the only team now with a winning record is NW.

Stop the running game which is way easier said than done and blanket Fumigalli and Iowa can win a low scoring battle. Make their QB beat you.

I see a similar recipe. However, that Wisconsin D is something. Even when their O is having issues ... the D sets their O up really well. Their stud RB got injured against Illinois ... and Illinois still couldn't take advantage because the Badger D shut them down.

That has been everyone's game plan this year and last. Iowa will try to execute it with the best personnel Bucky has seen this year.

bummer

I always want to face teams with all their best players

I understand your sentiment. But, do you think that they're saying the same thing about us missing our multi-year starting offensive tackles from last year's award winning offensive line and our starting free safety? I'd love to have seen those guys stay healthy all year too. But sometimes life doesn't work out that way.

Having to sit Josey for the whole game likely cost us a win against NW, think that the Wildcats care? That one loss because of his bum shoulder could possibly keep us out of the Big Ten championship game if we beat Wisconsin and they lose to Michigan. Somehow I doubt Wisconsin will have compassion for us having to deal with that.

MSU total 88 rushing yards vs Iowa, Jackson NW career rushing leader gained just 93 yards on 25 carries, these are the teams that mighty badger team has been putting big numbers up on.
Utah State
FAU
BYU
NW
Nebraska
Purdue
Maryland
Illinois
Indiana
not exactly the top teams in the BT or in the OOC. to date they have not faced a decent defense, NW is 54th in total defense. Iowa is 16th in scoring defense

The early NFL draft declarations of Ramczyk and Watt, plus the preseason injuries to Cichy, Maxwell, and Baun have required a number of guys to be in roles they were not expected to be in this year. Their replacements have now had a good amount of experience though, so there are no excuses.

Iowa presents the first big test of Wisconsin’s depth. We’ll see if they’re up to the task.

Wisconsin will dismantle us. Mark my words

the last time Iowa played in Camp Randall Iowa won, I like Iowa in this game.

If we're playing a game of transitivity .... Northwestern is the only team that the Badgers have played who has defeated another team with a pulse. It's one thing to have a winning record ... it is quite another to play against teams who themselves have won "impact games."

In contrast, Iowa has played Penn State (who thumped Michigan), Michigan State (who beat Michigan and PSU), Northwestern (who beat Michigan State), Iowa State (who beat OU and TCU), and Ohio State (who beat PSU). Obviously, Iowa only won 2 of the aforementioned games ... but even with a sputtering O, we kept each game competitive (if we didn't win).

If Iowa plays with the same enthusiasm as they did against OSU they probably win. It's going to be a different environment and it's hard to get sky high 2 games in a row.

I've noticed on most of the college football shows the so call experts talk around Iowa's chances of beating Wisconsin. It's always the Badgers next big test to stay undefeated will the game against Michigan. It's not how Iowa played against OSU it's how flat the Buckeyes were and what a bad coaching job Meyer did. If Iowa is going to get any respect they need to beat Wisconsin.

Or we can score lots of points like last weekend.
I just don’t see scoring 55 happening again so soon and definitely not against Wisconsin. First to 30 maybe even less wins. Especially with the current forecast. High 36, 70% chance light rain mixing with snow showers later, 10-15 mph winds.

will be interesting to see if there is any let down at all

how do they react to a hostile road environment?

how do they react to less than ideal weather conditions?

it was just 2 years ago that Iowa went into Camp Randall and won, the strange part of the schedule these were the games since
2010 Wisconsin won in Kinnick
2011 DNP
2012 DNP
2013 Wisconsin won in Kinnick
2014 Wisconsin won in Kinnick
2015 Iowa won in Camp Randall
2016 Wisconsin won in Kinnick
3 straight games were in Kinnick and I always thought the games were to rotate between home n home.

this team is a different team, these players are growing up in front of our eyes, expecting a stronger finish as there is more depth than there has been the last 4 years, the most important is a healthy QB and solid Backup. the RB's are both healthy and the depth is solid, this is true at most positions.

this is the product of BF and GD as they made it a point to balance out the positions, what can't be foreseen is injuries and players leaving because they were passed on the depth chart, this is good thing going forward.

one thing is about those that left, they did not leave in droves like they did from 2010-2012, nor has there been another Rhabdo that took out 13-14 players in one shot. Iowa was not capable of dealing with that impact on the team.

The WR injury doesn't really affect them and neither does the LB injury because he hasn't played a ton this year so the backup has been playing a lot more. The safety potentially being out could be big though. Anyone know what the forecast is for Saturday?

Mid 30s and rain/snow 10-15 mph winds. I know alot of people think bad weather= run the ball/def but I would argue adverse weather (minus wind, huge variable) is a plus for the offense as they know what play/route.

Cephus is far and away our best receiver, not sure how that doesn't affect UW. Orr has played a lot this year (4th in tackles and sacks), but is only a blow to depth.

Backup NT Garrett Rand was spotted on crutches today, so I doubt he will play this weekend as well.

The biggest question is whether out offense will pick up where they left off this weekend. If we get to 20 points I think we win. Otherwise, this will be another MSU/Northwestern slop fest.

It looked like BF figured some things out this past weekend and played to win. He kept OSU off balance on first down. He took shots down the field. That opened up the run game and got Wadley space to work.

Most importantly, Stanley played with confidence.

"I say we work up the old number 6 on them"-the best movie ever made.

Yeah, but it isn't like Wisconsin is going to be throwing the ball a ton. They are winning games because of their ground game.

However, you do not need to respect the pass game as much. Stack 8 in the box, run blitzes and so forth!
