these are the 4 shortest players going into this season
5th year SR 5'7 Molly Davis
JR 5'11 Altorfer
SO 5'9 McCabe
FR 5'4 Johnson.
the rest are 6'0 or taller with the tallest player being
RSJR 6'3 Goodman
JR 6'3 O'Grady
going to be fun watching this group this Fall.

They don't have any other way to list them. There is no "covid year" classification for eligibility.....

She is NOT listed as a RSSR on the Iowa site. That is just karnack being wrong and not being willing to admit it so he lies.

Affolter, McCabe and Feurbach are all good players and each currently has their own little role. I am hoping one of them breaks out and gets some playing time, but with Martin and Marshall coming back, it might be tough for all 3 of these ladies.

McCabe can clearly shoot the lights out. She needs to be in if Marshall is out. Affolter has grit, toughness and athleticism which could point to the defensive stopper role if she put her mind to it. I would like to see her develop a mid-range shot and/or work on a “floater.”

Feurbach might be in between both of them, as she can shoot and play defense. Closest comparison is probably Kate Martin. Hopefully she continues to get healthier and is ready to step into Kate Martin’s role in 2024.

Come to think of it, all of our guards should work on a mid-range shot and a floater. There has been and will be room to drive, since CC helps spread the defense way out, but they need to pull up just before you get to the land of the giants.

The biggest thing the whole team needs to really work on is boxing out, though. Good heavens!

I have been watching a lot of the replays from our great wins this year and even though I know the outcome, our inability to rebound is beyond cringe-worthy.

Also, there are huge stretches where every loose 50/50 ball goes to our opponents. Lack of hustle? Lack of foot speed? Hustle plays always comes down to who wants it more… and we almost always came out on the short end. (Maybe Affolter, McCabe, Davis and Feurbach can take ownership and be queens of the floorburns when they are in the game?)

Thank God we are so prolific at scoring! It covers up some other flaws. Still, these things should be worked on, IMHO.

Agree. I've always felt that a few players, such as the ones you mention, should wear knee pads so they can put their knees on the floor when going for loose 50/50 basketballs. Having knee protection can add greatly to quickness in these situations as it's much less painful to go to the floor. Knee pads would reduce floor burns too.

Warnock and Czinano, while incredibly efficient, were not athletic. Warnock was an above average rebounder but that's about it when it comes to "athletic" qualities. Czinano could barely jump, neither was very mobile. Warnock was our worst ball-handler and defenses knew it. She was very easy to turn over. While replacing 2 starters is always going to be tough (again, I don't want to undersell their efficiency -- it was HUGE), I'm glad that we return our 3 best ball handlers and 3 best defenders.

I'm not sure who will be starting, but I believe Stuelke, O'Grady, Feuerbach, Affolter, McCabe and Davis will all get significant minutes for at least a portion of the season. Regardless of who's in, this rotation will be a much quicker and athletic one than in years past.

The only player who isn't a clear step up in athleticism is Davis. I wouldn't be surprised to be McCabe leapfrog her and get more minutes at the 2 -- Davis didn't' bring much in '22-'23 besides court experience and ball-handling. Those are great to have -- obviously, especially for a PG, and I'm glad she's back as the back-up PG -- but that also didn't translate to much production on either end of the floor. It's possible Davis breaks through some and starts taking/making more shots, but if the rumors we've heard about McCabe are true (putting on weight, scoring at all 3 levels in practice), then I suspect we'll see her become a reliable back-up at the 2 by season's end.

IOW -- Outside Davis, everyone else listed is a clear step-up in terms of rebounding, speed, ball-handling, and defense from Czinano and Warnock. The biggest thing they need to improve is upping their FG% -- especially at the perimeter for Feuerbach, Affolter, Stuelke and O'Grady (depending on who plays the 3, 4, 5 -- that's very much up in the air). Stuelke also needs to work on her FT% lol. Fortunately these are all the exact things that Bluder does very well.

I rewatched the B1G Tourney championship vs. OSU recently and was struck by how productive Affolter and Stuelke are. Here's a condensed play by play of most of Q1:
  • Martin is called for an offensive foul early. Bluder pulls her and subs in Affolter.
  • Immediately Affolter gets the ball, drives to the basket and makes her shot.
  • On the following defensive possession, Affolter gets the rebound after the first shot attempt.
  • The next three possessions are a Czinano FG (assisted by Marshall), a Clark and 1, and then a Clark 3.
  • Affolter then assists on a Czinano FG.
  • Martin comes back in for Warnock and turns it over.
  • Affolter then drives and misses but draws a foul on Taylor Mikesell.
  • Affolter makes both her free throws.
  • Stuelke comes in for Czinano, grabs a defensive rebound and then makes a buzzer beater layup (assisted by Clark) to end Q1.
Everyone has gone on about the experience and chemistry of our starting 5, but I think that Affolter and Stuelke's speed and rebounding abilities really raised the ceiling for this team. I have to wonder how we might have fared against UConn had we played them after those two had started getting more regular minutes.

I also believe Gyamfi and Edigar remain X-factors. Both are apparently at least somewhat athletic, have great fundamentals, seem to have some range, and Edigar now is an upperclasswoman. If one of them can break through, it could potentially be a game-changer. And it may be necessary if Feuerbach's recovery is slow, Stuelke isn't progressing fast enough, Affolter can't develop a consistent 3 pt shot, O'Grady isn't meshing with Clark, etc. I'm glad we have options.

Did you review the kamikaze layup by Davis on a fast break? Just for that and the fact that she didn't get hurt on that play I'd say she is plenty athletic.
That was later in the game, I wasn't paying attention as much. That play was indeed awesome!!

I like Davis as a backup PG, don't get me wrong. I'm glad she chose Iowa, I'm glad she's back for year 5. But I don't think she is "athletic" in the way that it is typically used to describe certain kids (usually meaning they can jump high, fast enough to beat others down the court, are quick enough to win 50/50 balls, can stay in front of other athletic kids on defense, etc.)

Based on that description, Clark is really our only kid that you could describe as exceptionally athletic. She's obviously in her own stratosphere lol but Stuelke, Affolter, Feuerbach (maybe Gyamfi, just based on how others have described her in HS -- I haven't seen much of her) are the only others I'd describe that way.

Davis has other strengths of course that do give her an edge over other players, based on her experience, ball-handling skills, and court vision. She generally makes good decisions, which Bluder highly prizes (with good reason). She has also mentioned that Davis is "deceptive" and "crafty" -- I have no doubt she's right about that. And she will continue to get minutes, regardless, b/c she is our only other experienced PG and plays the position better than anyone else. I am doubtful that Etienne will be able to back up Clark this year as well as Davis, and I expect Davis to get minutes.

I just don't think I'd describe Davis as athletic, and I honestly don't think I've ever heard anyone else do so either. And that's okay! Being athletic isn't everything. You still need to develop, put in the hours, and learn a system. Czinano and Warnock did just that, and excelled within a system that complemented their skills and preferred style of play. It took them far. Talent only takes you so far in a team sport.

I'm also saying this based on two things:

1) What works best in Bluder's fast, offense-first system which relies on both shot volume and efficiency. Clark has taken Bluder's system to its zenith it seems, thanks to both her speed and her PG abilities. I think that the kids who can step up and help keep the offense as efficient and fast as Clark wants it to be will be at an advantage. Because of that, Stuelke, Affolter and (a healthy) Feuerbach have a big leg up. In some ways, McCabe has a leg up as well b/c she has a lightning quick release and good lateral speed.

2) What is needed for our roster based on departures and/or weaknesses. We will obviously need a few things to keep our team at an elite level:
  • Rebounding -- to make up for Warnock's departure (and we have never been particularly good rebounding so any other help is always welcome). I think that again gives Stuelke and Affolter a big leg up on the competition. O'Grady also has the height advantage that can help there so she is in the mix.
  • Defense -- Stuelke and O'Grady are clearly the best defenders off the bench, IMO. I don't think I need to explain more.
  • 3 pt Shooting -- Warnock was consistently our most efficient 3 pt shooter. And it sounds like McCabe may be able to provide that. In fact, she may be the only one who can.

Stuelke, Affolter, Feuerbach and O’Grady might help improve Iowa’s woeful offensive rebounding numbers, but Iowa will be hard pressed to improve last year’s defensive rebounding numbers, which were quite good until the NCAA tourney. For the year, Iowa was 30th in the country in defensive rebounding rate, and in conference play, Iowa led the BIG in defensive rebounding rate.

You have to wonder if it’s bc other teams simply had to give them up on order to get back in transition lol.

Our technique for rebounding is not even close to “good.” Watch the floor when the ball goes in the air and you NEVER see all 5 Hawks boxing out. The guards are especially bad at “watching” instead of getting position and getting their body on someone.

It’s truly an “effort” thing. It has to be emphasized by the staff. No question about why we lost to Creighton in the previous round of 32. This year’s tournament will also highlight our deficiencies there. It isn’t just because we are “small” in comparison to other teams. We were terrible at getting a body on the other teams players. This staff is so good at the fundamentals that it is hard to understand why …

If we are going to be deeper at the 3 guard spots this year, which it really looks like to me, then the staff needs to get serious about sitting a player (guard) down if they didn’t box out. It will solve that problem REAL FAST.

Is this not likely a product of transition defense?

Weren't we something like 7th in the country for awhile? Crazy to think the NCAA tourney brought us down so much. But then again perhaps it's a more accurate picture of our skills. Again, I have always chalked this up to other teams needing to give up rebounds to get back ASAP on defense.

They were a VERY good defensive rebounding team last season.
