Woodbury vs. Hammons/Haas

I'm enjoying the fair and reasonable Purdue fan visitors. Thanks Boilers for some good posts. Good luck, to a certain point of course, tomorrow.

As a couch coach I'd be looking at film of Iowa at Marquette to remind myself how we handled two talented bigs. They might not measure up to your guys, but we did enjoy some success.

Limit turnovers! Hopefully Iowa can make Purdue work on the defensive end with their side to side game and good passing to wear the bigs down. True for any road game, composure will be key to handle Purdue's runs and the crowd.

How 'bout those Hawkeyes!

Interesting comments. Thought I would see what you guys are saying about the game.I thought you looked good against MSU and are capable of beating anyone. If you don't mind, I will give you a little info. on Purdue. Hammonds is a totally different player than you saw last year. He plays with both hands and blocks shots with his left as much as his right. He is, for sure, a lottery pick. Haas has learned a lot from him and has actually started most games. Every team has tried to pack the middle, at least for a while, and it doesn't work. Although you don't hear about it a lot, Purdue has three solid 3-point shooters and a different one seems to get hot each game. AS for wearing Purdue down; it never happens---this team has a 9 man rotation and goes 11 deep. They seem to always win the second half. The only way I think you can win is to out rebound them (tough to do) and run. I think the weak point would be in transition. The writer above me is right. If you try and play a half court game, you will get destroyed.Purdue has one of the best defenses in the country. Purdue has had a tendency to get sloppy and commit turnovers. Iowa must score on them to have a chance. Expect a close first half. Then you need to hit shots and get some offensive rebounds. All that said, you have a solid team, and I am looking forward to the game.

Hawks are most successful pushing the tempo.
Playing the half court game is a losing proposition.
If they pull off the upset in this one it would be the most surprising B1G start I can remember in a long time.

I dunno...I think starting last year 4-1 was pretty surprising. A win over Nebraska (who were supposed to be the next big thing), and a win at Minnesota sandwiched between two wins over Ohio St. was pretty eye-opening to me.

Swannigan is a very unselfish player who will do whatever is needed from him. Against Butler Purdue needed him so he scored 25 points and 12 boards. To underestimate his ability is a huge mistake.

you lost that game, correct?

Wow, sounds like you guys are going to go undefeated and win the National title. Wait you got beat already.

I doubt Iowa wins on road, but Purdue is not as multi talented as you post. Take it down a notch.

100% correct. I felt the same way Purdue sounds unbeatable. I'm still going with an Iowa win at Purdue. Go Hawks!!!

A couple things for Hawks fans to keep an eye on during this game. While the discussion mostly focuses on the bigs, Vince Edwards is probably the most talented offensive player on the squad. He can score at all three levels is an effective offensive rebounder and an excellent passer. His weakness is he tends to defer when he should really be more assertive.

I think what the blustery poster above was trying to imply is that everyone in Purdue's 10-man rotation can score, which has not always been the case in the past. I believe all 10 have had multiple double-digit scoring games. What it allows is to always have fresh legs on the court, and that has allowed the Boilers to avoid significant foul trouble and wear down a lot of teams in the second half.

I don't think running to tire our bigs is going to work real well. They never play at the same time and I think both can handle 20 minutes of running up and down the court.

Haas isn't the fastest so if his man can beat him back it could lead to some transition offense opportunities. Hammons can handle it handle it just fine.

Gesell (sp?) is my worry. He has killed us in the past. You guys are focusing on limiting our big men as you should but from our side he is our biggest headache I think. If we can keep him out of the lane and force him to be inefficient I like our chances at home.

I remember winning against you guys at home last season and feeling like we really got away with one where the better team probably lost. I believe we are much better than we were at that time last season and I think you guys are too. Should be a great game.

Davis will be the primary defender on Uthoff, just like last year. When Swanigan takes good shots in the flow of the offense, he's pretty effective, but he does have a tendency to force things. The rebounding is a constant, though.

So Swanigan is going to defend a gaurd?

Wow, they are attempting to defending Clemons with a PF.

Complete slap in the face to AC.

You have to scrap the offensive game plan and just attack that until they change.

lol at adam woodbury, and lol at the OP actually thinking Woodbury would defend talented bigs, adam woodbury is an embarassment to all humans that are 7ft tall.

Hawks win Hawks win Hawks win!!! Keep beating everybody up people. We are a good team regardless of what you negative people think. Love it.

Woodbury played pretty damn well defensively and wasn't great offensively. Pretty much exactly what we expected. Are people really expecting more? We have enough other offensive threats. Woody is there for D.

Aahhhhh yeah.....Woody played a good game and held his own on the defensive end. Hammons had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Woody 6 points and 7 rebounds. He played his ass off.

For all the worry about Woodbury being able to stay on the floor in this game: 25 minutes, ONE FOUL! Possibly the most overlooked stat of the game.

He hasn't been in foul trouble very often for 3 years but for some reason I still see "hes foul prone" on here allot.

The power of first impressions I guess.

Im sorry, am I suppose to defend my earlier comment to you rambo like message boarders, because adam woodbury had 6-7 rebounds standing at 7ft1 and occasionally guards his man tightly? the guy never blocks shots, he struggles mightily to dunk a basketball, and is a very average rebounder for a man of his behemoth size, If you want to give the man a courage medal for playing some good defense then so be it, but do not act like he is some bad ass difference maker, he is a marginal role player at best and rarely impacts a basketball game, positively that is. Take off your hawkeye blinders and wake up woodbury lovers, the mans soft and timid around the basket. The man occasionally plays good post defense and corrals a rebound or two per half, he hits an occasional jump shot if he is wide open because nobody respects his offensive game whatsoever, I guess you could call him scrappy? Anyways if you want to crown him go right ahead, but for being a 4 star recruit and highly sought after, the guy struggles to jump 8 inches off the ground.

Ok......

and just some food for thought there rock n rolla, Iowas aggressive press was the key role in Iowas comeback tonight, so slow your roll there turbo. I think you took some offense to my posts that woodbury is an embarassment to all 7footers and that he is still learning to dunk a basketball, if you are a 7fter yourself or you struggle to dunk a basketball yourself, Man I am deeply sorry that I offended you.

Is there anyone who can honestly predict whats gonna happen in the vikings-packers game tonight? I sures heck cant.

I can't see the Packers winning. Our offense is a mess. The defense is only formidable when the offense keeps the pressure off of them which is far from the case this year. Unless Mike finds lightning in a bottle it will be a short post season for the Pack I hate to say from a selfish perspective.

Woody held an all-conference player well below his scoring average and equaled him in rebounding. Objectively, from ANYONE, that's a good job defensively. Woody can look awkward, but he gets the job done.

While he may not be the 16 pt. 10 rb guy you want him to be, he plays an important roll on this team and without him we would have a real problem with our interior defense. He is a glue guy, no flash, and is way more important than his stat line. I tire of the insults.

Who has objectivity? Happy he held his own is crowning him! Sometimes intent comes before content and it's obvious with you.

The 1 foul shocks me. Hammons/Haas were 8/10 from field but didn't get to line much.8/10 is very effective shooting in low post, but Woody did good job of denying and not fouling once they did have it down low. Feeding the post to bigs is prone to turnovers, so Iowa got some steals and H&H got theirs, but not as much as they normally pig out on. Woody's rebounding was stellar.

I am thinking Woody's reverse layups using the rim to protect against getting his shot blocked is his best move. He is low volume scorer, but can be effective.

All kinds of idiot in this thread. So Woodbury isn't a high flying dunker...great...he elevates like my grandmother...fine...point established. Why do you morons think Hammond's and Haas only got 10 shots in the post. Is it because Purdue wasn't trying to go down low? Is it because they wanted to win the hard way and score from farther away? No, it was because Woodbury and others were working the post for position all night and denying them the freaking ball. Hell, I'm willing to bet 3-4 of the ten shots were offensive rebounds where Hammond and Haas worked for position.

I think people see 7' and think he should just dominate, even tho the other guy is probably 6'10". Tough, hard nosed, floor diving, position fighting, good passing, team oriented SOB. I'll take him any day.

Uthoff matches up to 250 pounds?

It just PAINS me when people think, just because a BB player isn't FAT or Heavy, he must be 'easy to push' around. Obviously, it's those folks who never played the game, that have no clue.

Steph Curry isn't real muscle bound or heavy, is he? Kevin Durant?
Jarrod Uthoff? Reggie Miller? Allen Iverson? Kareem?

Sheesh........
