"Hurricane Patricia became the strongest storm ever measured on the planet early Friday, with experts warning it could trigger 40-foot waves along Mexico's coast and "life-threatening" flash flooding.

More than 7 million residents were told to prepare for the "worst-case scenario" as Patricia was expected to race ashore on Mexico's Pacific coast between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET Friday. The tourist magnets of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo were directly in the Category 5 storm's projected path."

Several years ago, a tornado with 190 MPH winds hit
the city of Washington, Illinois. It wiped out or damaged
1000 homes.

I am sure American home insurance will somehow find a way to correlate this hurricane to higher rates. My house insurance went from 2800 to 4800 in a single year...

My nephew was supposed to go to a wedding in PV this weekend. Fortunately Delta Airlines declined to fly him there. The soon to be newlyweds, were evacuated to the mountains. So if they ever do get married, they should have some pretty good stories. Storm surges up to 40'. Yikes.

Was just in PV last week. Sad to think about all the good locals we met. Ts n Ps for sure down there.

The old town section of PV sits in kind of a low bowl; we were there when there was just a real heavy rainstorm and practically had to wade all the way back to our condo. I can't imagine what a big hurricane will do there.

Wonder if the poster who complained about needing to spend an extra $600 to fly out during the last natural disaster in Cabo is in Puerto Vallarta this weekend.

There are people down there refusing to evacuate. Going to ride it out. Interesting that some are even taking time for board up windows. If that storm maintains even 75% of its strength at landfall the hit zone will become a parking lot.

I must be living in a cave. I havent even heard of Patty until the news this morning. Largest hurricane ever in the western hemisphere? Cat 5? Yikes. Many people are about to meet their maker. Prayers

Get back in your cave, that sounds like a smart place to be. I always thought we should build more underground houses.

I believe I read it went from a TS to a cat 5 in only 24 hours, could be why.

Yikes....I just checked the windspeed records, and this appears 100% true. At 0300 GMT Thursday, winds were 60-65MPH. One day later, at 0300 GMT Friday, they were 160 MPH. That is freaking crazy! Now they are reportedly sustained at up to 200 MPH.

I am on a community emergency response team here in Lakewood Ranch, FL. If a hurricane is coming towards this area (Sarasota/Bradenton) I am planning on riding it out (my home is 10 miles inland so won't get the full brunt of the storm surge). I will have the rest of my family evacuate days prior though. But, if one of that magnitude is heading our way......I am OUT OF HERE !

A lot of people don't realize how early you need to evacuate in populated areas. If you are still around 48 hours before the storm, you may have trouble getting out.
