WOW!

No one questions why a national champ takes a reduced scholarship to wrestle for a good program. The thing to question is why guys take reduced or no scholarship money to wrestle at a program where they will never see the line-up when they could be AA's on full rides at other schools.
Probably because each of these kids think they have the stuff to be a starter at PSU... if after a few seasons they aren't starting, then they can transfer out (for example, Garret Hammonds to Drexel and Kellan Stout to Pitt).

Good question. Who is Spencer Lee's back up? We should ask him.

PS. Who fits YOUR criteria of a full ride at another school, sat the bench and could have been AA?

2009-2010 Example
125 - Matt McDonough, back up Tyler Clark would've AA and Ramos is sitting in a red-shirt
133- Dan Dennis, back up Nate Moore could've AA and of course Slaton was waiting on an Administrative decision
141- Montell Marion, back up Dan LeClere would have AA

That was the deepest log jam of talent the Hawks have had in a while.

No way I see PSU breaking NCAA rules to win championships. Cody is way too smart to let himself and his bro get busted doing such things. Cunningham is way too smart to jeapordize his big payday that's coming in a year or too. It would mean Jake Varner is in on it too. C'mon. If they are breaking rules, they're the dumbest bunch in college sports.
I hope to hell the NCAA doesn't change any rules. The Hawk wrestling fan base is the largest in the country. Now that the blueprint to winning in today's climate has been exposed, we know what's to be done, and we'll get it down. Any changes to the rules that will hurt PSU will most certainly hurt us, and a few other programs. I think it would hurt teams like Lehigh, Cornell, and ASU even more. Why go back to the 80's, where rinky dink schools have an equal shot? That will not grow the sport, or be as entertaining as it is right now. Wrestling has never been more entertaining! Why screw with that? So don't change a damn thing, just get it done!

I believe the only issue that PSU might have is when a Senior who has been to the NCAA finals twice decides to give up scholarship money to bring in new recruits. That raises suspicions that someone implied that he may be compensated at a later time.

It has already been noted in several places (multiple threads either here, BWI, or both) that the family of the individual you are referring to could (and did) willingly afford such a sacrifice.

That goes back to my point about being dumb. I can't believe any coach would actually tell a senior a deal like that (not out loud anyway). Too many loose lips, as sports has taught us. If its implied, so be it. Not illegal. TNT need to imply the same to his seniors. Get our house in order and the money/recruits/titles will flow in.

I don't really post here anymore but can't not reply here. First, just what rules are you thinking the NCAA will change? Second, how will those changes effect schools like Cornell, Lehigh, and Arizona State more than others? Third, why and how will eliminating any chance for the"rinky dink" schools to be competitive stop the sport from growing? EVERY school that fields a team should have an opportunity to be sucessful. That is what will grow the sport. Without all those "rinky dink" schools there will be no place for the less than elite high school wrestlers to continue to compete. You think that will promote the sport of wrestling, how? Maybe just have only a dozen or so division one schools competeing. Perhaps having an even playing field for each and every division one school woud help the sport grow and add to the excitement?

Yep.

Nope. Alabama, Michigan, USC, Clemson, Texas are doing a great job of growing college football. It's all about money/recruitment/titles. Wrestling needs to do the same. The marquee programs need to be great. Give me 10 great wrestling events each year that make for good entertainment. That will grow the sport. I'm focusing on bringing wrestling to the casual fan, not just those of us who have a deeper understanding of the sport. We already have all of those fans.
Nobody is going to watch Iowa v Edinboro on TV. Let them have their programs... but they won't grow the sport.

I was just talking optics. Not making accusations.

Fair enough -- I wasn't sure whether you had seen the explanation previously.

Simply for sake of discussion, I might see it as more suspicious if an underclassman is giving up the scholly $$, as the cumulative dollar amount over multiple years is a bigger financial pill to swallow. A senior who has shown an obvious love for the program and the program's success (regardless of his own performance) wouldn't raise an eyebrow so much, IMO. Some do think bigger picture, value the strength of team, and have the means to be altruistic.

I agree with Slushfund. Only an NCAA investigation will get to the bottom of this.

I will watch it.

Well there you go, nothing to see here.

In other news, our prisons are full of innocent people, just ask them.

I'm still waiting for someone to answer whether or not the school has to disclose to the NCAA how much each collegiate athlete is paid for working camps/clinics.

Seems like it could be used as a way to bypass the 9.9 scholarship limit.

What are the rules/regulations on this? The only answer I've heard is that the school can only pay athletes the prevailing or market rate. But who determines that rate and who is verifying that schools aren't paying athletes more than this rate?

Fair questions Imo.

Anyone know the NCAA compliance department email address? Been doing some research, but hard to find much online. Found a phone number that I'll try to call tomorrow.

I'm sure your right.l No school that goes to the NCAA championships year in and year out would let an assistant coach provide recruits with parties, booz and young college women (pros). This couldn't possibly happen. The assistant coach has nothing to gain?

I had access to the details of the current off the books NLWC payments to ex-PSU wrestlers. There were emails that listed the then complete "off the record agreements" regarding wrestlers who received less than full-rides, who would be compensated via out of season camps and or after their eligibility had ended employment via the NLWC, but I lost them.

I mean I think someone accidentally erased them. I mean.... I guess my assistant accidentally took a hammer to the laptop where I had the agreements saved. Unfortunately, my phone and business PC that had the backup copies where accidentally destroyed as well by my assistant. He accidentally spilled gasoline on those devices on set fire to them before also accidentally smashing them with hammers. Maybe someone else will stumble upon those same agreements, without the eager assistant of course, for the right price.

I think we are talking different subjects. Nothing I posted has anything to do with assistant coaches providing perks to wrestlers.

Better call Saul, he has a copy.
