Texas wide receiver Gavin Holmes has reopened his recruiting.

Two weeks after making a verbal commitment to Duke, wide receiver Gavin Holmes has decided to reopen his recruiting. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Texas native announced that he was officially decommitting from the Blue Devils this evening.

"First off, I would like to thank Coach Cutt, Coach Faris, and the rest of the Duke football staff for believing in me from the get go," said Holmes in a statement on Twitter. "I have nothing but love for Duke University and I can't express how thankful I am for everything."

"But after a lot of thought I realized that I may have rushed my commitment and I've just had a change of heart. With that being said I have decided to decommit from Duke University and reopen my recruitment. I just feel I need more time to weigh out all my options and make sure that I make the best decision for me."

HawkeyeReport.com has confirmed tonight that Holmes is currently scheduled to visit Iowa on June 24 for the Hawkeye Tailgater.

Maybe Iowa traded Juan Harris to Duke for Mr. Holmes. Any chance Juan qualifies for Duke?

I thought Iowa would offer Oliver Martin by now.. Must be they are waiting as a fallback

And once again we see why players should sign LOIs whenever they make their decision. Then all this Juan Harris and other foolishness ends. Not sure? Don't sign. Sign? It's over. Everyone move on. This is one of the biggest improvements in the ugly business of recruiting that the NCAA could make. It's LONG overdue, as we see every year. After all, verbals are only as good as the paper they're not written on. :)

No signing when commit, just an early signing period would do.

Kids have been conditioned that it's okay to tell the ugly duckling you will take her to prom ... unless a better-looking chick shows up on your doorstep the day of the dance.

Which is worse: having kids decommit, or forcing kids to show up who are having serious doubts and/or regrets?

So what do we do when they sign and decide they don't want to be here? Waste space for a kid that doesn't want to be here? Doesn't sound great for team morale imo.
The system is certainly flawed.....not sure if that is the answer though.

College FB needs an early signing period, as well as allowing guys to make official visits during the summer, not just starting the fall of their senior years. It's very hard for players from Texas, California or Florida to make it to a Saturday afternoon game in Iowa City after they have a high school game on Friday night. SEC, of course, is against this. Just my opinion on what i would change as college FB czar.

Better yet, how about just moving the signing date to June 1st prior to the players senior year, and then leaving the signing period open? That way, they can still back put of a dumb choice they made when they were 16, but once you commit when you are a senior it's over.

We will know if we have "made it" when the title of this thread is on the BB board. That being said I hope he becomes a Hawk.

Looks like Iowa could get both Holmes and Hankins today. Getting 4 commits out of the weekend is huge and also big that they are getting kids from Texas and Mississippi.

Who was the last Mississippi kid Iowa landed? I honestly can't think of a single one.

Hope you are right, I like Holmes' speed and Hankins' cover skills.

Brad Banks. He wasn't technically "from" Mississippi, but Iowa recruited him when he was going to Hinds Community College in Mississippi. Close as I can come to remembering any Hawks affiliated with Mississippi at all.
