Hmm....
Post on 34 forum last night says admin and John Smith want Coleman Scott, but boosters with money want a bigger and splashier name and are willing to spend for it. So seems like an internal struggle ongoing there.
In the end, I think it's Scott. He is a good coach is already building something good there. The risk is that the momentum stalls and/or Scott gets pissed.
Heard Cunningham applied as well? Not for sure on that one but let's play it out.
It seems Okie State wrestling has a new deep pockets donor so I imagine he is behind some of this. It would suck for Coleman but OSU needs to get this right because wrestling coaching spots seem to last for 10+ years. If you were to write down all the pros and cons, I would probably rank their coaching candidates as follows: 1)Cunningham 2)Taylor 3)Coleman. All three are great candidates for different reasons.
Cunningham has a stellar reputation as the guy behind the guy. All the PSU wrestlers seem to love and respect him and its tough to argue with the results. As experienced assistants, can't get much better. That said, who lauds the mechanic when Ferraris end up being fast? Does he end up a head coach or willing to play Sandusky to Cael's Paterno. Window is getting close to closing.
If Taylor is going to coach in college, his name will never be as hot as it is right now. 5 years down the road, there will be others ordained as the next Chosen ones. Has no college coaching experience but he could hire a steady hand as an assistant to help him navigate the bureaucracy.
At UNC, they did develop a champ under Coleman but not much else. Best year was 3 AAs (2X).However, Coleman seems to be on a roll in recruiting. OSU is now getting guys that they probably wouldn't have over the past 5-10 years. Is this also tied to the influx of $$ coming in? But all in all, a better situation for CS because OSU isn't as academically rigorous as UNC and CS is a Poke with head coaching experience who knows the program and state. Also, it's easy to knock CS because out of the 3, he's the only one with head coaching experience.
I wouldn't worry too much about losing guys if Coleman doesn't end up getting hired. OSU is its own brand and there is precedent of teams hiring the dominant front runner's golden boy and having great success.
In the next few years. the following jobs should be open due to the age of the coaches:
Ohio State
Iowa
Iowa State
Ohio State and Iowa State seem to have "their" natural successor on staff. Iowa is the only one who doesn't.
