Mmm, they sound more like wishful rumors to me. Mainly due to the slow pace of naming Coleman HC. The Board of Regents met yesterday to select key university positions, so I would imagine that if Coleman is not named VERY soon, then there may be smoke.

All that said, if I were OSU or Iowa or Michigan, I'd be all over DT. I personally think he is the next IT in wrestling. You see it already at M2. He attracts elite kids in droves. You can't train to be an IT. You are or you're not.

that makes more sense. A wrestling POD tweeted it so it is a pretty broad rumor.

I added to my post. Despite my thinking the rumor is just that, I wouldn't hesitate to kick his tires no matter what my current plan is. The AD is paid a lot of money to make these hard choices.

I didn’t see a lot of his football film, so I may have seen just routine plays, which makes no one look exceptional. I’m just perplexed why Ferentz didn’t give him a few snaps, nothing to lose. Not the first time his personnel decisions have been head scratchers.

When reading, you have to remember this is the wrestling board. Everyone here absolutely wants Ben to succeed. They are just fans of wrestling FIRST. They want the absolute maximum success for Ben and Iowa in wrestling first and even you have to admit it would be easier and more likely attainable if he focused solely on wrestling.

So, you will have guys on here that don't necessarily want him to flat out fail in football. But, they WILL take even the slightest thing that makes it look like football isn't working out and run with it, in hopes that it means Ben will decide to forego football and be 100% all in on wrestling, year around.

Personally, I get why he is playing both. He is an incredible athlete, seems to love both sports and the possible benefits in football dwarf anything wrestling could ever offer. In the end, if his dream is to play in the NFL, I hope he makes it and don't begrudge him a thing in that pursuit.

Now, looking at it from a truly selfish, wrestling fan only perspective, you just can't help but speculate just how special he would be if he put all that hard work and talent JUST into wrestling...

This is great. I hear what you are saying and it's good stuff!

It's tough and we don't know where he will land. Our message to him is that he doesn't have to prove he can do both, that is not the mission. Figure out your passion and go from there.

His highlights must have impressed somebody, he played in the AA Under Armour Game and was a top 5 linebacker in the nation. https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-foo...-ben-kueter-named-finalists-for-butkus-award/

Good thing for Ben you weren't the one deciding! LOL

After 8 months in, we have met with both football and wrestling. I think it's going to be ok, lol. A lot of "figuring this out" in the first 8 months and figuring out what Ben can handle and what each program needs.

He is on full feed and gaining.

I have been trying to stay off this damn thing, but it keeps pulling me back in, lol. (a little Godfather reference).
I’ve watched/ listened to a handful of interviews Ben has done and I think more important than his athletic achievements (which are plentiful) he seems like a great person that will contribute to society in a positive manner whatever he decides to do. You and Mr. K did a fine job raising a humble, well spoken, incredibly driven young man. As a wrestling fan, he’s absolutely must see TV. He’s really fun and exciting to watch on the mat. We as Hawk fans are curious to find out if his ceiling is as high as we all think it is.

Hmm....

Post on 34 forum last night says admin and John Smith want Coleman Scott, but boosters with money want a bigger and splashier name and are willing to spend for it. So seems like an internal struggle ongoing there.

In the end, I think it's Scott. He is a good coach is already building something good there. The risk is that the momentum stalls and/or Scott gets pissed.

Why would they randomly play a guy buried in the depth chart? Especially when most games were knock down, drag out wars.

That's truly a head scratcher.

Heard Cunningham applied as well? Not for sure on that one but let's play it out.

It seems Okie State wrestling has a new deep pockets donor so I imagine he is behind some of this. It would suck for Coleman but OSU needs to get this right because wrestling coaching spots seem to last for 10+ years. If you were to write down all the pros and cons, I would probably rank their coaching candidates as follows: 1)Cunningham 2)Taylor 3)Coleman. All three are great candidates for different reasons.

Cunningham has a stellar reputation as the guy behind the guy. All the PSU wrestlers seem to love and respect him and its tough to argue with the results. As experienced assistants, can't get much better. That said, who lauds the mechanic when Ferraris end up being fast? Does he end up a head coach or willing to play Sandusky to Cael's Paterno. Window is getting close to closing.

If Taylor is going to coach in college, his name will never be as hot as it is right now. 5 years down the road, there will be others ordained as the next Chosen ones. Has no college coaching experience but he could hire a steady hand as an assistant to help him navigate the bureaucracy.

At UNC, they did develop a champ under Coleman but not much else. Best year was 3 AAs (2X).However, Coleman seems to be on a roll in recruiting. OSU is now getting guys that they probably wouldn't have over the past 5-10 years. Is this also tied to the influx of $$ coming in? But all in all, a better situation for CS because OSU isn't as academically rigorous as UNC and CS is a Poke with head coaching experience who knows the program and state. Also, it's easy to knock CS because out of the 3, he's the only one with head coaching experience.

I wouldn't worry too much about losing guys if Coleman doesn't end up getting hired. OSU is its own brand and there is precedent of teams hiring the dominant front runner's golden boy and having great success.

In the next few years. the following jobs should be open due to the age of the coaches:

Ohio State
Iowa
Iowa State

Ohio State and Iowa State seem to have "their" natural successor on staff. Iowa is the only one who doesn't.

Very thoughtful post Chief.

Casey is what, 46 or 47. As you say, he is a great coach but probably isn't going to be around for 20 years. And does he uproot his family. It would be a big loss for PSU no doubt. I just don't think Casey would leave PSU at this point. Too invested and very well paid per my understanding.

The time is now for DT. As you say, he will never be hotter. He has the IT factor and can learn some other things administratively as he goes. He would be my choice, and if really is a Magic Man, can give a program 20+ years at the helm.

I'm concerned about how long Ryan continues to head coach after his accident. His left leg is pretty messed up.

The last thing I'll say is that this is a game of musical coaching chairs and you definitely don't want to be last in selecting the latest and greatest. It can be like recruiting. You never know what you got until down the line.

iowa will be last...They will hold on to long like every coaching job in school history... We are very loyal to coaches

Maybe buried on the depth chart at linebacker, but special teams is where they usually get young guys some plays, especially against the weaker teams we play.

This would surprise me (unless OSU is starting or has a woman's wrestling program) based on conversations with him. That said, I would wish him only the best success and be very happy for him to pursue what he believes is his greatest coaching potential.

It would also provide another reason to root for OSU (as my uncle was an Oklahoma A&M grad).

So we'd have a bunch of psu/osu fans posting here if he was hired??
Good Lord, that really would be miserable.
Almost makes me hope he doesn't get hired there.

You think it’s possible that Scott quit a good job and dragged his family out to Oklahoma without securing adequate legal council and contractual obligations from the university. If he’s not “the Man” Okie State is gonna have a sizable buyout + pay who ever the new “big slash” guy.
